Could nerve transplantation be the future of this field: a bibliometric analysis about lumbosacral plexus injury.

BACKGROUND: Lumbosacral plexus injury is a highly distressing clinical issue with profound implications for patients' quality of life. Since the publication of the first relevant study in 1953, there has been very limited progress in basic research and clinical treatment in this field, and the developmental trajectory and research priorities in this field have not been systematically summarized using scientific methods, leaving the future direction of this research to be explored. METHODS: Utilizing publications from the Web of Science (WoS) database, our research employed bibliometric method

Clinical prospects for transplantation of OECs in the repair of brachial and lumbosacral plexus injuries: opening a door.

The reparative effects of olfactory ensheathing cells have largely been examined in lesions entirely within the CNS. There is, however, evidence that they can induce the ingrowth of severed dorsal root axons and increase the outgrowth of severed ventral root axons. The ingrowth of dorsal root axons results in reinnervation of appropriate regions in the spinal cord and dorsal column nuclei with restoration of electrical transmission and muscular control. This article discusses the further possibilities of these observations in rat studies and their potential translation to clinical injuries. Th

An anatomical study of the lumbosacral plexus as related to the minimally invasive transpsoas approach to the lumbar spine.

OBJECT: Minimally invasive anterolateral approaches to the lumbar spine are options for the treatment of a number of adult degenerative spinal disorders. Nerve injuries during these surgeries, although rare, can be devastating complications. With an increasing number of spine surgeons utilizing minimal access retroperitoneal surgery to treat lumbar problems, the frequency of complications associated with this approach will likely increase. The authors sought to better understand the location of the lumbar contribution of the lumbosacral plexus relative to the disc spaces encountered when perfo

[Reconstruction of the lumbosacral plexus of an embryo at stage 23 (25mm) and an embryo at stage 16 (7,5mm)].

Two embryos, one at stage 23 and another at stage 16, are reconstructed in view of studying the evolution of the lumbosacral plexus. At stage 16, the sacral plexus begins its development with anastomosis of L5, S1 and S2 roots, while the pelvic member is scarcely sketched. At stage 23, the evolution is complete, the pelvis is entirely constitued and the femoral, sciatic and obturator nerves of adult type. The coccygian plexus is in process of construction.

Neuroanatomy of the lumbosacral plexus in a highly diversified clade of South-American lizards. Evolution and phylogenetic implications.

Only few published studies that describe the neuroanatomy of lizards. Here, we describe the neuroanatomy of several Iguanian species belonging to three families (species of Liolaemus and Phymaturus belonging to Liolaemidae, Tropidurus and Stenocercus as representatives of Tropiduridae, and Diplolaemus as a representative of Leiosauridae). Based on Sudan Black B staining and conventional dissections, the neuroanatomy of the lumbosacral region is described. Among the most outstanding results is the existence of a neuronal pattern of the lumbosacral plexus characteristic of Liolaemidae. In additi

Hydrogen sulfide protects against spinal cord pyroptosis via persulfidation of Rac1 after lumbosacral plexus nerve injury.

Pyroptosis, a form of lytic and inflammatory programmed cell death mediated by gasdermin proteins, contributes to progressive spinal cord neurodegeneration following neural trauma. Nevertheless, the regulatory mechanisms governing this process remain inadequately characterized. In this investigation, hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) was identified as an endogenous inhibitor of neuronal pyroptosis, functioning through Rac1-dependent NLRP3 inflammasome signaling. In a rat model of lumbosacral plexus nerve injury, H₂S treatment significantly decreased pyroptosis-associated markers (NLRP3, caspase-1, GSDMD)

Magnetic resonance imaging evidence for perineural spread of endometriosis to the lumbosacral plexus: report of 2 cases.

Sciatic nerve endometriosis (EM) is a rare presentation of retroperitoneal EM. The authors present 2 cases of catamenial sciatica diagnosed as sciatic nerve EM. They propose that both cases can be explained by perineural spread of EM from the uterus to the sacral plexus along the pelvic autonomie nerves and then further distally to the sciatic nerve or proximally to the spinal nerves. This explanation is supported by MRI evidence in both cases. As a proof of concept, the authors retrieved and analyzed the original MRI studies of a case reported in the literature and found a similar pattern of

Differential diagnosis of knee pain following a surgically induced lumbosacral plexus stretch injury. A case report.

Background and Purpose: Knee joint biomechanics requires an understanding of lower extremity (LE) segmental interactions. In some cases, knee pain may arise as a result of altered LE biomechanics; while in other cases, knee pain may stem from other causes, such as a peripheral nerve injury. Case Description: A 33-year-old woman presented via direct access for physical therapist (PT) examination with a chief complaint of left knee pain. The day after undergoing a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure the patient had an acute onset of gait dysfunction. Over the next few days, the patient develo

Anatomical feasibility of transferring the obturator and genitofemoral nerves to repair lumbosacral plexus nerve root avulsion injuries.

Nerve transfer is a valid surgical procedure for restoring lower-extremity function after lumbosacral plexus nerve root avulsion. We determined the anatomical feasibility of transferring the obturator and genitofemoral nerves for this purpose. The obturator, genitofemoral and femoral nerves, and the S1 and S2 nerve roots on both sides were exposed in 10 cadaver specimens. We traced all nerves to their origins. The lengths of the obturator and genitofemoral nerves were measured from their origins to their exits from the abdominal cavity. The transverse and longitudinal diameters of all nerves w

Contralateral L-6 nerve root transfer to repair lumbosacral plexus root avulsion: experimental study in rhesus monkeys.

OBJECT: Nerve transfer is used for brachial plexus injuries but has rarely been applied to repairs in the lower extremities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of using the contralateral L-6 nerve root to repair lumbosacral plexus root avulsions. METHODS: Eighteen rhesus monkeys were randomized into 3 groups. In the experimental group, the left L4-7 and S-1 nerve roots were avulsed and the right L-6 nerve root was transferred to the left inferior gluteal nerve and the sciatic nerve branch innervating the hamstrings. In the control group, the left L4-7 and

Clinical efficacy and psychological influence of lateral rectus approach for treating pelvic fracture with lumbosacral plexus injury.

BACKGROUND: The surgical treatment of pelvic fractures is challenging, particularly after lumbosacral plexus injuries. Such impairments affect a patient's physiological function and can cause significant mental health problems. In recent years, the new transrectus lateral approach has favorably treated pelvic fractures and possibly preserved patients' physiological and psychological conditions. Therefore, investigating its clinical efficacy for treating pelvic fractures plus lumbosacral plexus injuries is of great clinical significance. AIM: To investigate the clinical effect of the transrect

Lumbosacral plexus and pudendal nerve magnetic resonance tractography: A systematic review of the clinical applications for pudendal neuralgia.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is commonly used to establish three-dimensional mapping of white-matter bundles in the supraspinal central nervous system. DTI has also been the subject of many studies on cranial and peripheral nerves. This non-invasive imaging technique enables virtual dissection of nerves in vivo and provides specific measurements of microstructural integrity. Adverse effects on the lumbosacral plexus may be traumatic, compressive, tumoral, or malformative and thus require dedicated treatment. DTI could lead to new perspectives in pudendal neuralgia diagnosis and management. W

Segmental zoster paresis of the lower limb with multisegmental lumbosacral plexus involvement: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Segmental zoster paresis (SZP) of the lower limbs is an uncommon complication of herpes zoster (HZ). Its atypical presentation and variable prognosis make early recognition and comprehensive intervention essential. We describe a patient who developed sciatica, ipsilateral herpetic vesicles on the calf, and subsequent lower limb paralysis but achieved full functional recovery within two months. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old man presented with a 6-day history of persistent left lower back pain radiating to the left lower limb. He was initially diagnosed with sciatica after lumbar

The lumbosacral plexus: Anatomy, clinical imaging, and proof-of-concept insights with ultra-high-field 7 Tesla MRI.

The lumbosacral plexus is the human neural network that provides motor and sensory innervation to the pelvis and lower extremities. Injury to the lumbosacral plexus may result due to trauma, compression, diabetes, infection, inflammation, or demyelination. Patients may present with persistent or progressive pain, paresthesia, or paresis. A diagnosis can typically be established based on correlation of clinical history, physical examination, and electromyography. However, although conventional diagnostic modalities provide vital functional information pertaining to motor unit activity and muscl
