A comparison of two interpretive approaches for the MMPI--A Structural Summary.

We undertook this study to provide empirically derived interpretative recommendations for the MMPI-A Structural Summary through an evaluation of factor elevation patterns. We examined the frequency of single-factor, two-factor, and multifactor elevations in a clinical sample of 363 adolescents receiving inpatient, outpatient, or residential treatment. Two methods of determining factor elevation (a simple majority of scales and subscales within a specific factor with T-score elevations at critical level, versus the mean T score generated by all the scales and subscales for each factor) yielded

MMPI profiles of depressed adolescents with and without conduct disorder.

This study examined whether adolescents with depression would produce significantly different MMPI profiles from adolescents with depression and conduct disorder. Twenty-four adolescents who met DSM-III-R criteria for major depression or dysthymia were included in the study. Nine of these 24 subjects also met DSM-III-R criteria for Conduct Disorder. Results indicated that depressed only adolescents had significantly higher elevations on scales 2 and 0 while those with depression and conduct disorder had significantly higher elevations on scales F and 9. These findings suggest that the presence

Relationships between the MAPI and the MMPI in the assessment of adolescent psychopathology.

Although the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI) are both widely used in the clinical assessment of adolescents, no research has examined the interrelationship between these two instruments. We investigated MMPI and MAPI responses from 199 adolescents assessed at entrance to inpatient or outpatient psychiatric programs in Florida and Virginia. Univariate correlation analyses identified areas of significant associations between these measures, with coefficients ranging widely from -.70 to .72. Substantial diagnostic differenc

[Dependency scale in the MMPI and dependent personality in DSM-III].

We tested a dependency rating scale issued from MMPI (considered relevant for DSM-III dependent personality disorder) on 33 males who met this DSM-III personality disorder. There is no significant difference between our subjects and the standard values reported in the literature. Some hypothesis about this negative results are discussed.

MMPI-2 profiles of women at risk for child abuse.

This study addresses the utility of the MMPI-2 in assessing personality characteristics of women who have a high potential for abusing their children. A sample of 154 women was identified on the basis of demographic characteristics as high risk for child abuse and other care-taking problems. They were evaluated (with the MMPI-2-AX form) during their pregnancy and are being followed up as part of the evaluation of a prevention/intervention program. This preliminary study compares the MMPI-2 personality characteristics of 146 of these women with several control samples: 1,462 women from the MMPI

A multimethod evaluation of the MMPI in a chronic pain patient sample.

Previous reports on the use of the MMPI with chronic pain patients have produced a variety of results. No single configural feature or scale identifies the chronic pain patient, regardless of the origin or verifiability of the etiology of the pain. Elevations on the neurotic triad occur frequently, but do not have the specificity of more recently reported chronic-pain subtypes on the MMPI. The present nonexperimental study (N = 72) provides an example of a multi-method analysis of a carefully selected sample of chronic pain patients without physical findings. Blind clinical analysis, simple tw

The validity of MMPI subtle and obvious items in psychiatric patients.

This study was designed to assess the validity of four clinical scales with and without subtle items; and the relative validity of obvious and subtle items. Criteria were questionnaire, mental status, diagnostic, and drug treatment measures; subjects were 73 psychiatric inpatients. Across criteria, the results indicated that the validity of the full scales was not improved by the removal of subtle items; and with the exception of the PD scale, subtle items generally were found to be of similar convergent validity and possibly superior discriminant validity. These findings have implications for

The value of the MMPI conversion 'V' in the assessment of psychogenic pain.

The conversion 'V' is a familiar MMPI pattern which is traditionally used as a clinical marker of psychogenic pain. The 'V' form is assumed to arise because conversion suppresses depression thereby lowering scores on scale D, and exacerbates physical sensations thereby increasing scores on Hs and Hy. An inverse relationship between scales Hs and Hy, and D is therefore expected. These assumptions were tested in 102 patients with low back pain and organic findings, and 93 patients with non-organic findings. The pattern of correlation among the three scales did not distinguish organic patients fr

The MMPI in three groups of patients with significant weight loss.

Fifty patients with severe weight loss thought to be caused by anorexia nervosa were hospitalized for evaluation. On the basis of psychiatric history and mental state examination, they were divided into three diagnostic categories: anorexia nervosa; other. The MMPI of patients with anorexia nervosa was markedly abnormal, with highest peaks on the D (depression), PT (obsessionality and anxiety), and SC (schizophrenia) scales. This profile was similar to that of patients with obsessional symptoms and neurotic depression, but differed significantly from the profile of patients with low weight but

Construct validity of the MMPI-2 College Maladjustment (Mt) Scale.

The construct validity of the MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2) College Maladjustment (Mt) Scale was examined using 376 student clients at a university psychological clinic. A principal components analysis and correlations of Mt scale scores with clients' and therapists' ratings of symptoms and functioning showed that the Mt scale identifies the presence of maladjustment as defined in terms of depressive and anxious symptoms. There is no evidence to show that the scale is specific to college students or that it is sensitive to severe psychological disturbance. The Mt scale

MMPI-2 clinical scale differences between dysthymia and major depression.

Though dysthymia is considered less severe and more chronic than major depressive disorder, it is unclear whether the two disorders are truly different. In this study, MMPI-2 scales of 21 patients with dysthymia and 30 patients with major depressive disorder were compared. The average scores on Scales 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 were in the clinical range for both groups. However, sizable differences between the two groups were found for Scale 1 and Scale 3. Smaller but reliable differences were found for Scale 2 and mean clinical scale T score with major depressives scoring higher on all of these measu

Psychological screening of impotence with Finney's MMPI-derived Impotence Scale.

Three groups of patients in treatment were assessed for impotence, using MMPI-derived Impotence Scale. Group I were 46 patients who had been screened and scheduled for a penile prosthesis when the impotence resulted from known organic causes (biogenic). Group II were 198 patients in a sexual dysfunction clinic, for whom biogenic causes had been ruled out (psychogenic). Group III were 51 substance abusers in drug rehabilitation. While scores on the Impotence Scale did not distinguish between the biogenic and psychogenic groups, the scores were almost three times higher than average scores among

Neurotic tendencies among chronic pain patients: an MMPI item analysis.

Previous research has shown chronic pain patients to have elevated scores on the Hypochondriasis (Hs), Depression (D), and Hysteria (Hy) scales of the MMPI. While high scores on these scales are generally considered to reflect neurotic symptomatology and emotional disturbance, their interpretation is more ambiguous within this patient population. Item-level and subscale analyses of these scales and the K scale (a measure of defensiveness) were performed in order to clarify the meaning of these elevated scores. In these analyses a pain group's endorsement of each item was compared with the resp

MMPI characteristics associated with cerebral palsy and dystonia musculorum deformans.

The origins of dystonia musculorum deformans are now considered to be organic. However, misdiagnosis of dystonia as a functional psychiatric disorder--usually conversion reaction--has persisted. The present study describes personality traits as measured by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory in 30 persons with dystonia and in a control group of 37 persons with cerebral palsy. The data, examined by diagnosis, level of disability, and sex, showed no differences for diagnostic groups or levels of disability. Males scored in the direction of greater psychopathology than did females. Th

Mapping MMPI-3 scales onto the hierarchical taxonomy of psychopathology.

A major goal in the development of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF), and subsequently, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) was linking the instrument to contemporary models of psychopathology. The present study evaluated whether the higher order structure of MMPI-3 scales, and in particular, the 26 Specific Problems as well as RC6 and RC8 (markers of thought disorder) scales aligned with the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) model. For this purpose, a large diverse mental health sample (n = 1,537) and a male p

Drinking and driving relapse: Data from BAC and MMPI-2.

Road traffic injuries are the ninth cause of death across all age groups, globally (WHO, 2015). Many road traffic crashes are caused by Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol by persons who have previously had their license suspended for the same reason. The aim of this study was to identify specific risk factors and personality characteristics in repeat offenders. The sample was comprised of 260 subjects who were not repeat DUI offenders (DUI-NR), but had a single license suspension between 2010 and 2011; and 97 repeat offenders who received at least two DUI convictions within a period

Psychometric characteristics of the MMPI-2 Cook-Medley Hostility scale.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI; Hathaway & McKinley, 1943) Cook-Medley Hostility scale (Ho) has been studied a great deal because of its relation to coronary disease and mortality. However, little research has been conducted with the Ho scale on the revised MMPI (MMPI-2; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989). This study examined the psychometric characteristics of the MMPI-2 Ho scale. Only nine of the original 50 Ho items were slightly changed in the revision. Ho scores were highly correlated with MMPI-2 scales CYN, K, TPA, and ASP, supporting the interp
