Machine learning-based prediction of cross-immunity.

Cross-immunity, defined as the ability of T-cells to recognize multiple antigen peptide-major histocompatibility complexes, is a fundamental feature of adaptive immunity. However, the prediction of different peptide epitopes that can be recognized by the same T-cell receptor remains challenging. Currently, artificial intelligent (AI)-based machine learning (ML) methods can be successfully used for pattern recognition in epitope molecular space by detecting the functional similarity between peptide sequences. In this study, using literature-based experimental data, we examined ML-based binary c

Quantifying cardiovascular autonomic aging with machine learning.

Machine learning has become an important tool in precision medicine and aging research. We introduce the cardiovascular autonomic age (CAA) gap, a novel metric quantifying the deviation between machine learning-estimated biological age and chronological age based on autonomic cardiovascular function. High-resolution electrocardiograms and continuous blood pressure recordings at rest were collected from 1,060 healthy individuals. From these signals, 29 autonomic indices were derived, including time-, frequency-, and symbol-domain heart rate variability, cardiovascular coupling, pulse wave dynam

Predicting preterm birth using machine learning methods.

Preterm birth is a significant public health concern, given its correlation with neonatal mortality and morbidity. The aetiology of preterm birth is complex and multifactorial. The objective of this study was to develop and compare machine learning models for predicting the risk of preterm birth. Data were collected from 50 patients in a maternity ward, with an analysis performed based on the timing of delivery (preterm vs. term). The applicability of XGBoost, CatBoost, logistic regression, support vector machines (SVM), and decision trees for predicting preterm delivery was evaluated through

Complication Prediction after Esophagectomy with Machine Learning.

Esophageal cancer can be treated effectively with esophagectomy; however, the postoperative complication rate is high. In this paper, we study to what extent machine learning methods can predict anastomotic leakage and pneumonia up to two days in advance. We use a dataset with 417 patients who underwent esophagectomy between 2011 and 2021. The dataset contains multimodal temporal information, specifically, laboratory results, vital signs, thorax images, and preoperative patient characteristics. The best models scored mean test set AUROCs of 0.87 and 0.82 for leakage 1 and 2 days ahead, respect

Harnessing machine learning in contemporary tobacco research.

Machine learning (ML) has the potential to transform tobacco research and address the urgent public health crisis posed by tobacco use. Despite the well-documented health risks, cessation rates remain low. ML techniques offer innovative solutions by analyzing vast datasets to uncover patterns in smoking behavior, genetic predispositions, and effective cessation strategies. ML can predict smoking-induced non-communicable diseases (SiNCDs) like lung cancer and postmenopausal osteoporosis by identifying biomarkers and genetic profiles, generating personalized predictions, and guiding intervention

Inferred networks, machine learning, and health data.

This paper presents a network science approach to investigate a health information dataset, the Sexual Acquisition and Transmission of HIV Cooperative Agreement Program (SATHCAP), to uncover hidden relationships that can be used to suggest targeted health interventions. From the data, four key target variables are chosen: HIV status, injecting drug use, homelessness, and insurance status. These target variables are converted to a graph format using four separate graph inference techniques: graphical lasso, Meinshausen Bühlmann (MB), k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), and correlation thresholding (CT).

Quantification of vesicoureteral reflux using machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: The radiographic grading of voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) images is often used to determine the clinical course and appropriate treatment in patients with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). However, image-based evaluation of VUR remains highly subjective, so we developed a supervised machine learning model to automatically and objectively grade VCUG data. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 113 VCUG images were gathered from public sources to compile the dataset for this study. For each image, VUR severity was graded by four pediatric radiologists and three pediatric urologists (low severity s

Multifidelity Machine Learning for Molecular Excitation Energies.

The accurate but fast calculation of molecular excited states is still a very challenging topic. For many applications, detailed knowledge of the energy funnel in larger molecular aggregates is of key importance, requiring highly accurate excitation energies. To this end, machine learning techniques can be a very useful tool, though the cost of generating highly accurate training data sets still remains a severe challenge. To overcome this hurdle, this work proposes the use of multifidelity machine learning where very little training data from high accuracies is combined with cheaper and less

Mycobacterium abscessus drug discovery using machine learning.

The prevalence of infections by nontuberculous mycobacteria is increasing, having surpassed tuberculosis in the United States and much of the developed world. Nontuberculous mycobacteria occur naturally in the environment and are a significant problem for patients with underlying lung diseases such as bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cystic fibrosis. Current treatment regimens are lengthy, complicated, toxic and they are often unsuccessful as seen by disease recurrence. Mycobacterium abscessus is one of the most commonly encountered organisms in nontuberculous mycobac

Objectification of intracochlear electrocochleography using machine learning.

INTRODUCTION: Electrocochleography (ECochG) measures inner ear potentials in response to acoustic stimulation. In patients with cochlear implant (CI), the technique is increasingly used to monitor residual inner ear function. So far, when analyzing ECochG potentials, the visual assessment has been the gold standard. However, visual assessment requires a high level of experience to interpret the signals. Furthermore, expert-dependent assessment leads to inconsistency and a lack of reproducibility. The aim of this study was to automate and objectify the analysis of cochlear microphonic (CM) sign

Machine Learning Models for Inpatient Glucose Prediction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Glucose management in the hospital is difficult due to non-static factors such as antihyperglycemic and steroid doses, renal function, infection, surgical status, and diet. Given these complex and dynamic factors, machine learning approaches can be leveraged for prediction of glucose trends in the hospital to mitigate and prevent suboptimal hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic outcomes. Our aim was to review the clinical evidence for the role of machine learning-based models in predicting hospitalized patients' glucose trajectory. RECENT FINDINGS: The published literature on mach

Machine Learning Models for Predicting Liver Toxicity.

Liver toxicity is a major adverse drug reaction that accounts for drug failure in clinical trials and withdrawal from the market. Therefore, predicting potential liver toxicity at an early stage in drug discovery is crucial to reduce costs and the potential for drug failure. However, current in vivo animal toxicity testing is very expensive and time consuming. As an alternative approach, various machine learning models have been developed to predict potential liver toxicity in humans. This chapter reviews current advances in the development and application of machine learning models for predic

CYTOMEGALOVIRUS RETINITIS SCREENING USING MACHINE LEARNING TECHNOLOGY.

PROPOSE: A screening protocol for cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) by fundus photography was generated, and the diagnostic accuracy of machine learning technology for CMVR screening in HIV patients was investigated. METHODS: One hundred sixty-five eyes of 90 HIV-positive patients were enrolled and evaluated for CMVR with binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy. Then, a single central field of the fundus image was recorded from each eye. All images were then interpreted by both machine learning models, generated by using the Keras application, and by a third-year ophthalmology resident. Diagnostic p

Predicting cancer using supervised machine learning: Mesothelioma.

BACKGROUND: Pleural Mesothelioma (PM) is an unusual, belligerent tumor that rapidly develops into cancer in the pleura of the lungs. Pleural Mesothelioma is a common type of Mesothelioma that accounts for about 75% of all Mesothelioma diagnosed yearly in the U.S. Diagnosis of Mesothelioma takes several months and is expensive. Given the risk and constraints associated with PM diagnosis, early identification of this ailment is essential for patient health. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we use artificial intelligence algorithms recommending the best fit model for early diagnosis and prognosis of Ma
