Urolithiasis in a captive group of Tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii).

Urolithiasis is a well-known disease of the urogenital system in domestic animals, and it has also been described in captive and free-ranging wildlife. This article reports 15 cases of urolithiasis in a captive group of Tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii) between 2004 and 2011. The analyzed stones were composed of pure calcium carbonate (n = 5), calcium carbonate with traces of calcium phosphate (n = 6), carbonate apatite (n = 2), and carbonate apatite mixed with calcium oxalate (n = 2). In 12 out of 15 cases uroliths were situated only in the renal pelvis; in two cases they were found in the

Peters anomaly in a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

A 10-mo-old female red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) presented with a unilateral congenital corneal opacity OD. Complete ophthalmic examination revealed a shallow anterior chamber and a focal area of corneal edema with multiple persistent pupillary membranes extending from the iris colarette to the corneal endothelium adjacent to the edematous area of cornea. High-resolution B-scan ultrasound of the anterior segment showed an area consistent with thinning of Descemet's membrane in the area of corneal edema. Ophthalmic examination and ultrasound findings are consistent with a diagnosis of Peters an

Fatal toxoplasmosis associated with an atypical Toxoplasma gondii strain in a Bennett's wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) in Spain.

Toxoplasmosis is often fatal in captive wallabies, but the causes of this high susceptibility are not well understood. Here, we report fatal toxoplasmosis in a Bennet's wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) due to an atypical Toxoplasma gondii strain for the first time in Europe. The wallaby was from a colony of 7 Bennet's wallabies that died over a 17-month period at a safari-zoological park in northeastern Spain. Only one of these wallabies was examined at necropsy. T. gondii-like organisms were detected by histological examination in several tissues and the diagnosis was confirmed through detectio

Precocious development of hydatid cysts in a macropodid host.

This study describes the pathological changes associated with an experimental infection of captive wallabies with Echinococcus granulosus. Adult and juvenile tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii) were infected orally with 0, 1,000, 2,500 or 8,000 E. granulosus eggs. Lung cyst progression was monitored by chest radiography every 4 months until 16 months p.i. Animals were necropsied from 9 to 16 months after infection. Cysts were detected radiographically from 4 months onwards. The number of cysts per animal varied from one to 10 and the majority (36/40) of cysts established in the lungs. Infectio

Distinctive pattern of organisation in the retinofugal pathway of a marsupial: I. Retina and optic nerve.

The nasotemporal division in the retina and the pattern of crossed and uncrossed axons in the optic nerve were determined in an Australian marsupial, a wallaby, Setonix brachyurus (the quokka), following unilateral horseradish peroxidase injections into primary visual centres. The gross morphology of the nerve was also examined. Ipsilaterally projecting ganglion cells were restricted to the temporal retina, whereas those that project contralaterally were located in all retinal regions. The morphological study of the nerve showed that fasciculation patterns, evident along much of the length of

Immunocytochemical study of the endocrine pancreas in the grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus).

The endocrine pancreas of the grey kangaroo, Macropus fuliginosus, was investigated by means of immunocytochemistry using the PAP method on the same section at the light- and electron-microscopic levels. Semithin plastic sections were stained individually with primary antibodies for insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide (PP), and then photographed. Sections were osmicated, re-embedded in BEEM capsules, and ultrathin sections made and examined. The same labelled cells as in the semithin sections were localised in the thin sections, photographs taken and the morphology of se

Light- and electron-microscopic study of the microbial deposits present on the tongue and dentition of macropods.

The dental deposits in the kangaroos and wallabies were similar to human calculus with lysed bacterial cell remnants embedded in previously mineralized areas. The surface of the microbial deposits in contact with the enamel showed: (a) triangular structures 3-5 micron deep and 4-5 micron wide at their base repeating every 4 or 5 micron which probably occupied the remnants of Tomes processes which in macropods do not flatten out; (b) irregular, short (1 micron) projections that probably occupied the inter-prismatic areas. Few organisms were observed on the anterior or dorsal surfaces of the ton

The structure of the cells lining the stomach of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii).

The stomach of the tammar may be divided into cardiac, "oesophageal", fundic and pyloric regions. In the cells of the cardiac region (which occupy 65% of the stomach) at least three types of mucous droplet are present. The stratified squamous "oesophageal" region occupies 20% of the stomach and the fundic and pyloric regions make up the remaining 15%. The cellular structure of the three last named regions seems to be similar to that described for other monogastric mammals. Endocrine cells were found in all glandular regions.

Metastatic gastric squamous cell carcinoma in a western grey kangaroo.

An adult male western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) developed lameness, a stiff gait, and weight loss, and deteriorated despite medical treatment. Postmortem examination revealed a primary gastric squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with associated cardiac, pulmonary, diaphragmatic, hepatic, and vertebral metastases with lytic bone lesions. Before histologic examination, the macroscopic appearance of the liver lesions had raised concerns about mycobacteriosis. Metastatic gastric SCC has not been reported previously in a western grey kangaroo, to our knowledge.

The alternate pathway of androgen metabolism and window of sensitivity.

Since the discovery in 1968 that dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a major mediator of androgen action, a convincing body of evidence has accumulated to indicate that the major pathway of DHT formation is the 5α-reduction of circulating testosterone in androgen target tissues. However, we now know that DHT can also be formed in peripheral tissues by the oxidation of 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol (adiol). This pathway is responsible for the formation of the male phenotype. We discuss the serendipitous discovery in the tammar wallaby of an alternate pathway by which adiol is formed in the testes, secrete

Two viable Toxoplasma gondii isolates from red-necked wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus) and red kangaroo (M. rufus).

Wallabies and kangaroos are susceptible to Toxoplasma gondii. However, little information concerning T. gondii infection in captive macropods is available. Three dead macropods collected from a zoo exhibited no clinical symptoms associated with toxoplasmosis. Heart fluids were tested for T. gondii antibodies using a modified agglutination test. T. gondii DNA samples derived from macropod tissues were tested by Polymerase Chain Reaction. Viable T. gondii were isolated from myocardium of macropods via mouse bioassay. Tissues (brain, lungs, or mesenteric lymph nodes) from T. gondii-positive mice

A second-generation anchored genetic linkage map of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii).

BACKGROUND: The tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii, a small kangaroo used for decades for studies of reproduction and metabolism, is the model Australian marsupial for genome sequencing and genetic investigations. The production of a more comprehensive cytogenetically-anchored genetic linkage map will significantly contribute to the deciphering of the tammar wallaby genome. It has great value as a resource to identify novel genes and for comparative studies, and is vital for the ongoing genome sequence assembly and gene ordering in this species. RESULTS: A second-generation anchored tammar wall

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in two captive Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus).

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) was diagnosed during postmortem examination of 2 captive adult Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus rufogriseus). The wallabies were members of a mob (herd) of 3 wallabies, and 2 died spontaneously without clinical signs of heart failure being detected. Gross lesions in both cases included marked concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle, pulmonary edema, and multifocal hemorrhage and subcutaneous edema of the hind limbs. Histologic lesions of the heart were limited to mild cardiac myofiber disarray and marked cardiac myofiber hypertrophy. A specific e

Unilateral failure of development of mandibular premolars and molars in an Eastern Grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) and its effects on molar progression.

An adult male Eastern Grey kangaroo from a wildlife reserve near Melbourne was submitted for necropsy examination and was discovered to have abnormal dentition. There was no evidence that any premolars or molars had ever been present on the right mandible, whilst the incisors were normal. The age of the kangaroo was estimated to be 1 year 9 months using the right maxillary molars and 2 years 4 months old using the contralateral side, presumably due to the asymmetry of the dental arcades. 'Lumpy jaw', a common periodontal disease of kangaroos, from which Bacteroides sp was cultured, was present

Cystic echinococcosis in a wild population of the brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata), a threatened macropodid.

Infection of small macropodids with the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus can cause fatalities as well as significant pulmonary impairment and other adverse sequelae. The brush-tailed rock-wallaby (Petrogale penicillata) is a small macropodid listed as vulnerable on the IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species. This study used radiographic techniques to determine the prevalence and severity of pulmonary hydatid infection and growth rates of hydatid cysts in a wild population of this macropodid. The overall prevalence was 15.3% (9/59 animals) with 20.0% (8/40 animals) of adults infected. Dur

A quantitative study of the morphological development and bacterial colonisation of the gut of the tammar wallaby Macropus eugenii eugenii and brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula during in-pouch development.

We compared the rates of change of various morphological parameters of the stomach, small intestine, caecum and colon of tammar wallabies and brushtail possums with body mass during in-pouch development. These were correlated with changes in the numbers of bacterial species in the various gut segments. In the pouch-young of both species, the wet tissue masses of all gut segments increased with body mass in a positively allometric manner (i.e. with a body mass exponent > 1), suggesting that the mass of each component was disproportionately low at birth, but increased disproportionately rapidly

Genetic variation in the Heterodoxus octoseriatus group (Phthiraptera): a test of Price's model of parasite evolution.

Most of the genetic variation in the H. octoseriatus group is present as fixed gene differences between species which have been described on morphological criteria. Based on allozymes, the taxonomic status of some species was challenged. There was insufficient evidence, however, to demonstrate that these were not 'good' biological species. Overall, the limited intraspecific variation was present as fixed gene differences among lice from different hosts and from different colonies of hosts; heterozygotes were rare. Two predictions derived from Price's model of parasite evolution were met: popul

The structure of the TH/INS locus and the parental allele expressed are not conserved between mammals.

Parent-of-origin-specific expression of imprinted genes is critical for successful mammalian growth and development. Insulin, coded by the INS gene, is an important growth factor expressed from the paternal allele in the yolk sac placenta of therian mammals. The tyrosine hydroxylase gene TH encodes an enzyme involved in dopamine synthesis. TH and INS are closely associated in most vertebrates, but the mouse orthologues, Th and Ins2, are separated by repeated DNA. In mice, Th is expressed from the maternal allele, but the parental origin of expression is not known for any other mammal so it is

Pathologic and immunohistochemical findings in an outbreak of systemic toxoplasmosis in a mob of red kangaroos.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan pathogen that infects many endothermic vertebrates, including humans; the domestic cat and other felids serve as the definitive host. Macropodids are considered highly susceptible to toxoplasmosis. Here, we describe the clinical, pathologic, and immunohistochemical findings of an outbreak of systemic toxoplasmosis in a mob of 11 red kangaroos (Macropus rufus), with high morbidity (73%) and mortality (100%) rates. Affected animals had either severe and rapidly deteriorating clinical conditions or sudden death, which was correlated with widespread necrot
