The ablepharon-macrostomia (AMS) and Barber-Say syndromes (BSS) are rare disorders characterized by absence of the eyelids or ectropion, macrostomia, ambiguous genitalia, abnormal ears, rudimentary nipples, and dry, redundant skin. Patients with Barber-Say syndrome also have hypertrichosis. We present a patient with a phenotype similar to AMS who has a complex rearrangement of chromosome 18, involving both an inversion and interstitial deletion. Our patient lacks the typical features of the 18q deletion syndrome. We review AMS and BSS as compared with our patient, and recognize cutis laxa as a

Macrostomia is a type of transverse facial cleft (termed number 7 in the Tessier classification) and a disorder in which there is a cleft on 1 or both sides of the corner of the mouth. The Kaplan technique is used for the treatment of macrostomia and is characterized by forming the corners of the mouth with a single continuous flap of vermilion. In this technique, there are no suture lines at the commissure; thus, it does not cause contracture at the corners of the mouth. We performed a small Z-plasty on the outer edge of the flap at the corner of the mouth, constructed using the Kaplan techni

Congenital macrostomia is a rare congenital deformity that consists of an enlargement of the commissure of the mouth. The malformation may be unilateral or bilateral and has a polymorphic presentation. Various surgical techniques have been described to correct macrostomia, with only a few cases illustrating the expected results. The surgical repair must consider both esthetic as well as functional impacts for the patient. We here propose a technical note to refine and provide additional information for good achievement of "Double Reversing Z-Plasty" for correction of macrostomia. Our case seri

• Congenital macrostomia is an uncommon facial malformation in children. • The choice of the surgical procedure should be based on functional, aesthetic results and the surgeon's experience. • Even in underdeveloped countries, Z-commissuroplasty could be performed with good results. • Further research should focus on long-term follow-up of large series, regardless of the type of surgical procedure.

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS) is a rare condition with fewer than 20 cases being reported in the literature. Features of AMS include ablepharon, hypertelorism, macrostomia, dysplastic ears, sparse body hair, and ambiguous genitalia. The most significant phenotypic presentation is rudimentary eyelids resulting in exposure keratopathy, corneal abrasions, and potential blindness. Numerous methods including primary full thickness skin grafting, conjunctival sutures followed by full thickness skin grafting, and a combination of skin grafting and local flaps have been described for definitiv

BACKGROUND: The transverse facial cleft, as described by Tessier, is a rare anomaly that affects both aesthetics and function. Various techniques for commissuroplasty have been discussed in the literature, often with inconsistent results. In this case series, the authors used a modified vermilion square flap technique to achieve satisfactory oral function and aesthetic outcomes.
METHODS: Five Tessier 7 cleft patients underwent reconstruction using vermilion square flap technique with W-plasty for the skin closure to help create a less noticeable scar. Evaluation was conducted at least 1 year

BACKGROUND: Macrostomia or lateral cleft lip is a rare congenital deformity. In this article we describe a surgical technique of macrostomia repair developed. The objective of this article is to assess the results of our surgical technique and to validate a method for macrostomia surgical result evaluation.
METHODS: We included retrospectively patients with unilateral and bilateral macrostomia, operated from 1995 to 2014 in our department. First part of the study was a satisfaction questionnaire completed by patients. The second part was subjective evaluation of frontal photography (closed mo

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS) is an extremely rare congenital ectodermal dysplastic disease characterised by craniofacial, skin, skeletal and genital abnormalities. Very few cases have been reported since the first case report in 1977. We report the case of a 6-day-old male delivered to unrelated parents. He was dysmorphic with absent eyelids, eyelashes and eyebrows, large fish-shaped mouth, hyperpigmented thick anterior abdominal wall, absent prepuce amongst other features. Skull X-ray showed poorly developed zygomatic bones. The patient is being managed as a case of AMS in a multidis

To date, Fraser syndrome (FS) and Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS) have been considered distinct disorders, but they share strikingly similar patterns of congenital abnormalities, specifically craniofacial anomalies. While recent research has led to the identification of the genes FRAS1 and FREM2 as the cause of FS, the genetic basis of AMS continues to be enigmatic. We report on the concurrence of AMS-like and Fraser phenotypes in a Brazilian family. Both affected sibs were homozygous for a novel splice site mutation in the FRAS1 gene. Extensive studies on mRNA expression indicated that

Five cases lateral facial cleft (macrostoma) received in 30 years period are presented. The embriological background and the theories of the ethiopathogenesis are discussed. The authors' method to repair the abnormality--in spite of simple closure--is the modified Estlander flap surgery, which is described in details. The necessity of early treatment is emphasized. One case is presented in details.

PURPOSE: To describe the late results of the placement of skin graft over conjunctiva-Müller muscle complex in 3 patients with ablepharon-macrostomia syndrome (AMS) and to review the procedures used to manage the upper eyelids in AMS.
METHODS: The authors searched the Pubmed database for all articles that used the term "ablepharon-macrostomia syndrome" in any field. Data collection included description of eyelid changes, age at surgery, status of the cornea before surgery, type of eyelid repair, and final outcome. Two previously reported siblings were reevaluated 10 and 15 years after a singl

We made a descriptive epidemiological study of patients who presented with isolated macrostomia during a mass screening programme and repair of orofacial cleft deformities in Lagos, Nigeria. Detailed histories of environmental, gestational, and hereditary factors that may contribute to the malformation were taken, and physical examinations and specialist consultations to detect associated congenital malformations were made. Three patients had unilateral macrostomia and in 12 it was bilateral and symmetrical. The mean (SD) age was 8 (2) years, range 3 months to 32 years. There were 6 men and 9

We report on a child, born to a consanguineous parents, who presented with a multiple congenital anomalies (MCA) pattern consisting of severe hypertrichosis, macrostomia, ectropion, and atrophic skin. To our knowledge this is the third case with this combination of defects. The two previous cases were reported by Barber et al. [Syndrome Identification VIII(1):6-9, 1982], and David et al. [Am J Med Genet 41:192-195, 1991].

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome (AMS) and Barber-Say syndrome (BSS) are rare congenital ectodermal dysplasias characterized by similar clinical features. To establish the genetic basis of AMS and BSS, we performed extensive clinical phenotyping, whole exome and candidate gene sequencing, and functional validations. We identified a recurrent de novo mutation in TWIST2 in seven independent AMS-affected families, as well as another recurrent de novo mutation affecting the same amino acid in ten independent BSS-affected families. Moreover, a genotype-phenotype correlation was observed, because the

The so-called ablepharon macrostomia syndrome is an extremely rate congenital condition that includes abnormal ears, an enlarged, fishlike mouth, absence of lanugo, redundant skin, and vertical shortening of all eyelids. Only four cases have been described so far. In these cases the nature of the eyelid anomalies has not been clearly defined. We report one more case showing that the condition is better described as a severe microblepharon because only the anterior lamella of the eyelids is shortened. The literature about this condition is reviewed, and oculoplastic treatment is discussed.
