Feeding and temperature changes in sheep following injections of barbiturates, Ca-++, or Mg-++ into the lateral, third, or fourth ventricle or cerebral aqueduct.

Eleven sheep were prepared with cannula guides directed toward four areas within the ventricular system to determine effective sites of action of chemicals which when injected into the cerebrospinal fluid produce changes in feeding behavior and temperature regulation. Pentobarbital, barbital, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride elicited feeding in sheep when injected into the third ventricle or into the cerebral aqueduct; however, feeding response was less after injections into the latter. Pentobarbital and magnesium chloride elicited an increase in body temperature when injected into the

[Comparative study of magnesium salts bioavailability in rats fed a magnesium-deficient diet].

The purpose of this study was to compare efficiency of compensation of alimentary Mg deficiency after administration of 12 organic and 8 inorganic magnesium salts and to evaluate the ability of vitamin B6 to accelerate their effect. Two hundred eighty rats were placed on a Mg-deficient diet (Mg content (15 mg/kg) and demineralized water for 7 weeks. Twelve control rats were fed a basal diet (Mg content 500 mg/kg). Starting from day 49 of the Mg-deficient diet, the rats were given magnesium salts (50 mg magnesium and 5 mg pyridoxine per kg): Mg chloride, Mg sulphate, Mg oxide, M nitrate, Mg thi

Recovery of phosphorous from industrial waste water by oxidation and precipitation.

This paper describes the development of a method for recovery of phosphorous from one of the waste waters at an Akzo Nobel chemical plant in Ale close to Göteborg. It was found that it is possible to transform the phosphorous in the waste water to a saleable product, i.e. a slowly dissolving fertilizer. The developed process includes oxidation of phosphite to phosphate with hydrogen peroxide and heat. The phosphate is then precipitated as crystalline struvite (ammonium magnesium phosphate) by the addition of magnesium chloride. The environmental impacts of the new method were compared with tho

Histochemical properties of cartilage proteoglycans.

Proteoglycan interaction with alcian blue at different concentrations of magnesium chloride was studied both in vitro and in histological sections of paraffin-embedded tissues. Our experiments indicate that a) proteoglycans with different contents of chondroitin sulfate and keratan sulfate, prepared under nondegradative conditions, are not distinguishable on the basis of the critical electrolyte concentrations at which staining is abolished; b) the state of aggregation of proteoglycans only very slightly affects the alcian blue affinity of the macromolecules at different concentrations of magn

The Dietary Approach to the Treatment of the Rare Genetic Tubulopathies Gitelman's and Bartter's Syndromes.

Gitelman's (GS) and Bartter's (BS) syndromes are rare, inherited autosomal recessive tubulopathies characterized by hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, renal sodium, chloride, and potassium and magnesium-wasting. While the treatment based on potassium, sodium, chloride, and magnesium supplementation in addition to other pharmacologic options are widely established, recommendations about the dietary approach to GS and BS still remain generic. In this review we focus on the dietary strategies to increase sodium, potassium, and magnesium intake in GS and BS patients. Potassium and magnesium-rich fo

Does parenteral magnesium sulfate have an antiemetic effect during chemotherapy with cis-platinum?

Cisplatin is a chemotherapeutic agent with a high emetic potential; it can lead to hypomagnesemia, which is caused by a renal wasting. Because of beneficial effects of magnesium in the therapy of motor disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract and its sedative, anticonvulsive effect in eclampsia, we tested parenteral magnesium sulfate as a potential antiemetic in patients receiving cisplatin. A prospective, randomized, double-blind, cross-over study was carried out in 20 patients receiving greater than or equal to 60 mg/m2 cisplatin. A standard antiemetic regimen consisting of a single dos

The effect of calcium and magnesium ions on calcium pyrophosphate crystal formation in aqueous solutions.

Calcium pyrophosphate crystal formation has been associated clinically with hypercalcemic states (hyperparathyroidism) and hypomagnesemia. We studied aqueous solutions at pH 7.4, 37 degrees C, [Na+] = 140 nM over a range of calcium chloride/magnesium chloride/sodium pyrophosphate concentrations to determine the effect of calcium and magnesium ions on crystal formation. We found that CPPD(T) and CPPD(M) could form under different ionic conditions. Low [Mg++] and [PPi] favoured CPPD(T) whereas higher [Mg++] and [PPi] favoured CPPD(M). At [Mg++] = 1.0 mM a calcium magnesium pyrophosphate crystal

Cerebral palsy and experimental hypoxia-induced perinatal brain injury: is magnesium protective?

Recent retrospective, observational studies describe an association between maternal administration of magnesium and a reduction in cerebral palsy in low birthweight infants. Cerebral palsy is thought to result mainly from hypoxia-induced brain injury, and its incidence is increasing due to recent advances in obstetric and newborn intensive care. The findings of the observational studies raise the promising possibility that magnesium treatment may protect the immature brain from hypoxia-induced injury and thus decrease the incidence of cerebral palsy. Despite this promise, a critique of clinic

Hypomagnesemia: an evidence-based approach to clinical cases.

Hypomagnesemia is defined as a serum magnesium level less than 1.8 mg/dL (< 0.74 mmol/L). Hypomagnesemia may result from inadequate magnesium intake, increased gastrointestinal or renal losses, or redistribution from extracellular to intracellular space. Increased renal magnesium loss can result from genetic or acquired renal disorders. Most patients with hypomagnesemia are asymptomatic and symptoms usually do not arise until the serum magnesium concentration falls below 1.2 mg/dL. One of the most life-threatening effects of hypomagnesemia is ventricular arrhythmia. The first step to determine

[A comparative study of antiarrhythmic and antihypoxic effects of magnesium sulfate, its prolonged form and blockers of calcium channels].

The aim of the study is the comparative study of treatment of heart and brain damages during the hypoxia with magnesium sulfate, verapamil, diltiazem. As a result of the experiment carried out on rats it was proved that magnesium sulfate and its prolonged form are not less active than the blockers of calcium channels, such as verapamil and diltiazem. It is possible to avoid lethal fibrillations caused by calcium chloride with the help of 25% magnesium sulfate solution (after intraperitoneal administration with the dose of 1000 mg/kg) in case we make arrythmogenic injection 5 minutes after inpu

Does calcium chloride help restore maternal blood pressure and uterine blood flow during hemorrhagic hypotension in hypermagnesemic gravid ewes?

Magnesium sulfate worsens maternal hypotension and fetal oxygenation during hemorrhage in gravid ewes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether calcium chloride administration is a useful adjunct to blood transfusion during hemorrhagic hypotension in hypermagnesemic gravid ewes. Sixteen experiments were performed in eight chronically instrumented animals between 0.8 and 0.9 of timed gestation. The experimental sequence included (a) T = 0: magnesium sulfate 4 g IV; (b) T = 5: infusion of magnesium sulfate 4 g/h IV; (c) T = 90: maternal hemorrhage 20 mL/kg over 55 min; (d) T = 147: cal

The effects of saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin on nerve conduction in the presence of lithium ions and of magnesium ions.

1. It has been shown that nerve fibres from rat cauda equina will conduct action potentials after immersion in saline in which lithium chloride is substituted for sodium chloride.2. Both saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin inhibit lithium-generated action potentials. The concentration of toxin needed to inhibit the lithium-generated action potentials is similar to that needed to inhibit sodium-generated action potentials.3. If magnesium chloride is added to the saline to give a concentration of 10-15 mM there is usually a slight fall in amplitude of the compound action potential. Saxitoxin and tetrodot

The effects of serum potassium and magnesium levels in a patient with Gitelman's syndrome on the timing of ventricular wall motion and the pattern of ventricular strain and torsion.

Gitelman's syndrome is a primary renal tubular hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. Hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia can cause cardiac tissue excitability and conduction. Global ventricular mechanical function is directly related to the contractile properties of cardiac myocytes, which are largely dependent on the flow of ions such as potassium and magnesium. Here, we show that increased levels of potassium, in addition to magnesium, in a patient with Gitelman's syndrome significantly impacts the timing of ventricular wall motion and the pattern of ventricular strain and torsion. Effects of metal salt addition on odor and process stability during the anaerobic digestion of municipal waste sludge.

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is an effective way to recover energy and nutrients from organic waste; however, several issues including the solubilization of bound nutrients and the production of corrosive, highly odorous and toxic volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in AD biogas can limit its wider adoption. This study explored the effects of adding two different doses of ferric chloride, aluminum sulfate and magnesium hydroxide directly to the feed of complete mix semi-continuously fed mesophilic ADs on eight of the most odorous VSCs in AD biogas at three different organic loading rates (OLR). Ion concentrations in oviduct and uterine fluid and blood serum during the estrous cycle in the bovine.

In the bovine up to 40% of embryos die before implantation but despite the importance of ions in oviduct and uterine fluid formation and in gamete, zygote and early embryo development there is very little published information on the ion concentrations of oviduct or uterine fluid. The free anions chloride, phosphate and sulphate and the free cations sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium were measured in oviduct fluid on days 0, 2, 4 and 6 and in uterine fluid on days 6, 8 and 14 and in corresponding blood samples. Oviduct and uterine fluids were collected in situ. Sodium was 25-fold higher

Oral magnesium supplementation decreases C-reactive protein levels in subjects with prediabetes and hypomagnesemia: a clinical randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It has been suggested that magnesium deficiency is associated with the triggering of acute phase response, which may contribute to type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk. We undertook this study to determine whether oral magnesium supplementation modifies serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in apparently healthy subjects with prediabetes and hypomagnesemia. METHODS: A total of 62 men and non-pregnant women aged 18-65 year, with new diagnosis of prediabetes (glucose 5.6 <7.0 mmol/L and/or post-load glucose ≥7.7 <11.1 mmol/L) and hypomagnese

Magnesium in perinatal care and infant health.

Magnesium, the second most abundant intracellular cation, is essential for life. The consequences of deficiency are severest in the smallest and youngest members of each species and may include sudden unexpected death. Magnesium deficiency, usually diagnosed by hypomagnesemia, may be congenital, as in premature infants, infants of magnesium-deficient mothers and infants with intrauterine growth retardation. It may be acquired or caused by low magnesium intake, the use of magnesium-wasting drugs, illness provoking gastrointestinal or renal losses of the mineral, or high metabolic demands impose
