Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Treatment Reduces Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Septic Shock in Mice.

Despite advances in medicine, mortality due to sepsis has not decreased. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is emerging as an alternative treatment in many inflammation-related diseases. However, there are few studies on the application of PEMF therapy to sepsis. In the current study, we examined the effect of PEMF therapy on a mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced septic shock. Mice injected with LPS and treated with PEMF showed higher survival rates compared with the LPS group. The increased survival was correlated with decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine mRNA ex

Efficacy of Repetitive Trans-spinal Magnetic Stimulation for Patients with Parkinson's Disease: a Randomised Controlled Trial.

We evaluated the effect of repetitive trans-spinal magnetic stimulation (rTSMS) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in a randomised, single-blind study. Participants were hospitalised and administered a single trial of rTSMS or sham treatment 2 days a week for 4 weeks. In addition, all participants underwent rehabilitation 5 days a week for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was the difference between the two groups in the mean change from baseline to post-training in the total score on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Secondary endpoints included the differences between t

[The role of rehabilitation and apparatus physiotherapy in rheumatic disease treatment strategies].

Rheumatic diseases are a serious medical and social problem. The variability of mechanisms for the development of this group of diseases requires different approaches: strategies of drug and non-medicament therapy in modern rheumatology are designed to complement each other. EULAR recommendations pay insufficient attention to the use of non-medical methods of joint disease treatment. According to modern research, multi-disciplinary rehabilitation strategies, including, in addition to drug therapy, educational programmes, physical training of various intensities, as well as the use of apparatus

Magneto-mechanical destruction of cancer-associated fibroblasts using ultra-small iron oxide nanoparticles and low frequency rotating magnetic fields.

The destruction of cells using the mechanical activation of magnetic nanoparticles with low-frequency magnetic fields constitutes a recent and interesting approach in cancer therapy. Here, we showed that superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as small as 6 nm were able to induce the death of pancreatic cancer-associated fibroblasts, chosen as a model. An exhaustive screening of the amplitude, frequency, and type (alternating vs. rotating) of magnetic field demonstrated that the best efficacy was obtained for a rotating low-amplitude low-frequency magnetic field (1 Hz and 40 mT), reaching a

Mechanical stimuli-driven cancer therapeutics.

Mechanical stimulation utilizing deep tissue-penetrating and focusable energy sources, such as ultrasound and magnetic fields, is regarded as an emerging patient-friendly and effective therapeutic strategy to overcome the limitations of conventional cancer therapies based on fundamental external stimuli such as light, heat, electricity, radiation, or microwaves. Recent efforts have suggested that mechanical stimuli-driven cancer therapy (henceforth referred to as "mechanical cancer therapy") could provide a direct therapeutic effect and intelligent control to augment other anti-cancer systems

Simultaneous Enhancement of Magnetothermal and Photothermal Responses by Zn, Co Co-Doped Ferrite Nanoparticles.

Reducing nanoparticle (NP) dosage for hyperthermia therapy has remained a great challenge. In this work, efficiencies of alternating current (AC) magnetic field and near-infrared (NIR) heating are simultaneously enhanced by Zn and Co co-doping of magnetite NPs. The optimum magnetic anisotropy for maximized loss power under each magnetic field is achieved by tuning the doping concentration. The specific loss power of Zn0.3 Co0.08 Fe2.62 O4 @SiO2 NPs reaches 2428 W g-1 under an AC field of 27 kA m-1 at 430 kHz; 12 296 W g-1 under NIR laser irradiation at 808 nm and 2.5 W cm-2 ; and an unpreceden

Combined magnetic field results in higher fusion rates than pulsed electromagnetic field bone stimulation after thoracolumbar fusion surgery.

BACKGROUND: Bone growth stimulators have been used as an adjunct to spinal fusion surgery in efforts to increase fusion rates. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients who underwent thoracolumbar fusion surgeries by a single surgeon. Patients were then separated into three groups; pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation (PEMF), combined magnetic field stimulation (CMF) or no stimulation (NS), and computed tomography radiographic results at least 1 year after surgery were compared (solid fusion, stable nonunion, and pseudarthrosis). RESULTS: A total of 60

Adjustable shunts and proton therapy: a magnetic combination.

OBJECTIVE: Due to evidence for proton beam therapy (PBT) in pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors, compact proton therapy systems became commercially available to allow better integration in a hospital setting. However, these systems have a non-zero magnetic field at the level of the patient. Often, these patients have a cerebrospinal fluid shunt, and most of them are adjustable through a magnet. Whether the induced magnetic fields could interfere with adjustable shunts is unknown. METHODS: In the first five CNS tumor patients with adjustable shunts who underwent PBT, the shunt settin

The Influence of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy on Lymphatic Flow During Supermicrosurgery.

Background: The influence of pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMFT) on medium-sized vessels as well as capillary microcirculation is well known. Effects on lymphatic vessels, however, are difficult to visualize and have not been investigated to date. One of the operative treatment options in primary and secondary lymphedemas is lymphovenous anastomoses using supermicrosurgery. To prove patency of the anastomosis, the lymphatic flow is visualized by fluorescence using indocyanine green. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of PEMFT on the lymphatic microcirculation, and
