Not even magnetic resonance imaging is a perfect method for imaging of the breasts. Quality of the equipment, imaging parameters as well as the experience and competence of radiographers and radiologists have a significant effect on the final outcome of the study. Since interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging of the breasts is challenging, the radiologist should have access to a comprehensive medical history and previous images, including the reports. Feedback from the reports made and multidisciplinary postoperative meetings are important. Since magnetic resonance imaging is expensive an

Standard magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as MR arthrography (MRA) have been important diagnostic tools to assess for a spectrum of clinical presentations related to the hip. MRA has allowed the radiologist to closely examine intracapsular structures such as the acetabular labrum. In this article, we provide a general review of soft tissue and osseous anatomy of hips, especially focusing on the MR appearances of the acetabular labrum and the osseous morphology of the greater trochanter and ischial tuberosity with their muscle and tendon attachments. In addition, current topics in recen

The ankle represents an anatomically complex region with a broad spectrum of pathologies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the ankle offers detailed, high-resolution imaging of the bones, the ligaments and the surrounding soft tissue structures and therefore has a major role in the diagnostic evaluation of traumatic sequelae, infectious diseases or ankle pain of unknown origin. MRI is especially valuable in the detection of radiographically occult stress reactions or osteomyelitis because it can visualize bone marrow edema earlier than any other imaging method. MRI is superior to any other

Optimal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the wrist requires a high field strength magnet and a dedicated wrist coil to achieve high-resolution images. Using current MR sequences, detailed images of articular cartilage and the supporting ligaments and tendons can be obtained. Evaluation of the triangular fibrocartilage as well as the extrinsic and intrinsic ligaments of the wrist is possible with thin-slice three-dimensional volumetric gradient recalled sequences. Fast inversion recovery sequences, used to achieve fat suppression in peripheral joints such as the wrist, allow for detection of

Magnetic resonance imaging of the knee was the first successful application of this technique to the articular system. The advantages of magnetic resonance imaging over arthrography include its noninvasive nature, the ability to evaluate the knee in multiple planes without patient repositioning, the absence of ionizing radiation, the capacity to evaluate the joint even in the presence of joint effusion, and the ability to examine the inner structure of the meniscus as well as its surface. Although magnetic resonance imaging initially was used to study the menisci and cruciate ligaments, the te

MR imaging has proved to be of great value in the assessment of musculoskeletal imaging. Its superiority in evaluating knee and spine pathology is well established. Recent studies also have established an important role for MR imaging in the assessment of shoulder disorders. Multiplanar capabilities coupled with excellent contrast resolution that allows simultaneous delineation of osseous and soft-tissue structures make MR imaging a useful method for evaluating the complex anatomy of the shoulder.

Rarely does any radiologic imaging modality play a significant role in reaching a diagnosis of malignancy in the larynx and hypopharynx. These regions are so readily accessible to clinical examination that the combination of cytology and visual inspection usually strongly indicates the diagnosis of cancer. Therefore, the primary role of MR is the same as that of CT in imaging the larynx and hypopharynx: to define the extent of the disease. Compared to CT, MR consistently shows superior soft tissue definition. The use of direct coronal and sagittal scan planes allows the visualization of intrin

The role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of the spine is expanding rapidly. In addition to being noninvasive, MRI offers high soft-tissue contrast and multiplanar imaging capability. MRI examinations of the spine usually include a T1-weighted spin-echo and a T2-weighted spin-echo and/or a gradient-echo sequence. As in other parts of the body, the use of surface coils results in higher-quality examinations. Various methods are employed to reduce the motion artifacts that are particularly troublesome in spine imaging. Paramagnetic contrast agents are used to enhance soft-t

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is proving to be an effective means for evaluating the shoulder. The use of a surface coil and high resolution scanning techniques have allowed detailed analysis of the normal anatomy of the shoulder. When evaluating for shoulder pathology, the choice of imaging plane and pulse sequencing will be determined by the suspected pathology. In patients with impingement syndrome, subacromial bursitis, supraspinatus tendinitis, and supraspinatus tendon tear can be differentiated, and the offending component of the subacromial are traumatizing these soft tissues can be

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an accepted non-invasive modality for evaluation of soft tissue pathology without exposure to ionizing radiation. Current applications demonstrate excellent visualization of the anatomy and pathology of various organs. Preliminary studies in the knee reveal fine resolution of anatomy and pathology involving the meniscus. The purpose of this study is to determine a prospective correlation between MRI scans and actual meniscal pathology as documented at the time of arthroscopy. MRI scans were obtained in 155 patients, on 156 knees (one patient with bilateral s

Magnetic resonance imaging was utilized in 18 patients with prostatic cancer and compared with the findings in normal volunteers (Pontes et al., 1985), benign prostatic hyperplasia (Hricak et al., 1983), acute prostatitis (Walsh and Jewett, 1980) and chronic prostatitis (ACS, 1986). Sixteen of the 18 patients with carcinoma demonstrated inhomogeneous signal intensity, however, a similar appearance was also seen in 5 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. It does not appear that magnetic resonance imaging is able to reliably differentiate benign from malignant prostatic disease. Extra-pros

Seven normal volunteers and 69 patients with known disease in either the mediastinum or hila or both were imaged using a prototype magnetic resonance imager operating at 0.15T. Normal mediastinal and hilar structures were readily identified and mediastinal diseases were well demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The value of MRI lies in the morphological demonstration of the presence and extent of disease.

Twenty-two normal volunteers and 32 patients with either benign prostatic hypertrophy or prostatic carcinoma were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The images were of high quality and clearly demonstrated the prostate gland and the surrounding anatomy but were of limited value in differentiating between benign and malignant prostatic disease. Using a specific pulse sequence, the authors were able to visualize what they believed to be the periprostatic venous plexus and suggest that the demonstration of this venous plexus may be of value in showing extraglandular spread of carcinoma

The adrenal glands are located superior to the kidneys and play an important role in the endocrine system. Each adrenal gland contains an outer cortex, responsible mainly for the secretion of androgens and corticosteroids, and an inner medulla, which secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine. Here, we review the anatomy of the adrenal glands and explain the current imaging modalities that are most useful for the assessment of the various conditions--both benign and malignant--that can affect these glands. As adrenal lesions are often identified incidentally on cross-sectional imaging performed f
