A new colorimetric lactate biosensor based on CUPRAC reagent using binary enzyme (lactate-pyruvate oxidases)-immobilized silanized magnetite nanoparticles.

A novel optical lactate biosensor is presented that utilizes a colorimetric interaction between H2O2 liberated by a binary enzymatic reaction and bis(neocuproine)copper(II) complex ([Cu(Nc)2]2+) known as CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) reagent. In the first step, lactate oxidase (LOx) and pyruvate oxidase (POx) were separately immobilized on silanized magnetite nanoparticles (SiO2@Fe3O4 NPs), and thus, 2 mol of H2O2 was released per 1 mol of the substrate due to a sequential enzymatic reaction of the mixture of LOx-SiO2@Fe3O4 and POx-SiO2@Fe3O4 NPs with lactate and pyruvate, resp

Removal of As(III)/As(V) from aqueous solution using newly developed thiosalicylic acid coated magnetite [TSA@Fe3O4] nanoparticles.

The aim of this study was to develop an affordable adsorption methodology for removal of As(III)/As(V) from contaminated water. Herein, novel adsorbent TSA@Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by decorating thiosalicylic acid (TSA) on magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) and employed for removal of As(III)/As(V) species from artificially contaminated natural water systems. TSA@Fe3O4 NPs demonstrated excellent adsorption efficiency (AE) and 98% of As(V) and 93% of As(III) was removed at optimized experimental conditions. The adsorption kinetic and equilibrium isotherm studies were conducte

Optimization Study on Specific Loss Power in Superparamagnetic Hyperthermia with Magnetite Nanoparticles for High Efficiency in Alternative Cancer Therapy.

The cancer therapy with the lowest possible toxicity is today an issue that raises major difficulties in treating malignant tumors because chemo- and radiotherapy currently used in this field have a high degree of toxicity and in many cases are ineffective. Therefore, alternative solutions are rapidly being sought in cancer therapy, in order to increase efficacy and a reduce or even eliminate toxicity to the body. One of the alternative methods that researchers believe may be the method of the future in cancer therapy is superparamagnetic hyperthermia (SPMHT), because it can be effective in co

Airborne Magnetite- and Iron-Rich Pollution Nanoparticles: Potential Neurotoxicants and Environmental Risk Factors for Neurodegenerative Disease, Including Alzheimer's Disease.

Fewer than 5% of Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases are demonstrably directly inherited, indicating that environmental factors may be important in initiating and/or promoting the disease. Excess iron is toxic to cells; iron overload in the AD brain may aggressively accelerate AD. Magnetite nanoparticles, capable of catalyzing formation of reactive oxygen species, occur in AD plaques and tangles; they are thought to form in situ, from pathological iron dysfunction. A recent study has identified in frontal cortex samples the abundant presence of magnetite nanoparticles consistent with high-temperatu

From degradation to (re)magnetization: magnetic reprogramming of maghemite (Massart), magnetite, cobalt ferrite and ferrihydrite nanoparticles by human stem cells.

Iron-based nanostructures, whether environmental or synthetic, can infiltrate the human body and interact with cells due to their nanoscale dimensions. Some human cells, upon the internalization of iron oxide nanoparticles and their biodegradation, are capable of de novo biosynthesis of magnetic nanostructures. This process is evidenced by a transient loss and subsequent recovery of magnetic signal, a phenomenon termed "cellular re-magnetization". In this study, we explored the intracellular fate of four types of iron-based nanoparticles: maghemite (Massart), magnetite, cobalt ferrite, and fer

Green synthesis of magnetite (Fe3O4) and hematite (Fe2O3) nanoparticles using Moringa oleifera and Psidium guajava leaf extracts for sustainable applications.

Magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and hematite (Fe₂O₃) nanoparticles hold significant potential for catalysis, environmental remediation, biomedicine, and energy generation. However, conventional synthesis methods for iron-oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) are often complicated or involve hazardous reagents, limiting scalability. Although plant extract-mediated green synthesis offers better alternatives, many rely on rare or expensive biomaterials and hazardous precursors or pH-adjusting chemicals, compromising eco-friendliness and cost-effectiveness. To address these challenges, we developed a truly green, efficie

Chemical states in XPS and Raman analysis during removal of Cr(VI) from contaminated water by mixed maghemite-magnetite nanoparticles.

Mixed maghemite-magnetite has been used as adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal in this study. Results show that the adsorption capacity is enhanced with an increase in reaction temperature and decrease in free energy change. Thermodynamic study shows that Cr(VI) adsorption on the mixed maghemite and magnetite is endothermic in nature and is dependent on solution pH between 3 and 6. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results demonstrate the theoretical multiplet peaks for iron and chromium adsorbed iron at the surface of the γ-Fe(2)O(3) and Fe(3)O(4) mixture. Theoretical multiplet analysis shows t

Enhancement in the induction heating efficacy of sol-gel derived SiO2-CaO-Na2O-P2O5 bioglass-ceramics by incorporating magnetite nanoparticles.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticle (MNP)-substituted glass-ceramic (MSGC) powders with compositions of (45 - x)SiO2-24.5CaO-24.5Na2O-6P2O5-xFe3O4 (x = 5, 8, and 10 wt%) have been prepared by a sol-gel route by introducing Fe3O4 nanoparticles during the synthesis. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the as-prepared MSGC nanopowders revealed the presence of combeite (Na2Ca2Si3O9), magnetite, and sodium nitrate (NaNO3) crystalline phases. Heat-treatment up to 700 °C for 1 h resulted in the complete dissolution of NaNO3 along with partial conversion of magnetite into hematite (α-Fe2O3). Optimal heat-tre

Periodic mesoporous organosilica-coated magnetite nanoparticles combined with lipiodol for transcatheter arterial chemoembolization to inhibit the progression of liver cancer.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is standard locoregional therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that involves the injection of chemotherapeutic drugs with embolic agents into tumor tissues through intra-arterial transcatheter infusion. TACE technology using lipiodol emulsion has been most widely used in the treatment of human HCC. However, lipiodol emulsions with anticancer drugs do not stably maintain high drug concentrations at tumor sites. Herein, we developed a dual-modality imaging nanoplatform for the TACE treatment of liver cancer by integrating periodic mesoporous o

We presented a signal amplified lateral flow assay (LFA) based on magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) labeled dual-probe and applied it in the high sensitive and rapid on-site detection of furazolidone metabolite of 3-amino-2-oxazolidinone (AOZ). The amplified signal benefited from high affinity between two probes of MNPs labeled murine monoclonal antibody (MNPs-MAb) and goat anti-mouse antibody (MNPs-GAMA) and was achieved by the generation of dual-probe network complex. This developed method could realize high sensitive detection of AOZ with a threshold value of 0.88 ng mL-1 and a detection limit

[Role of mexidol (2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine succinate) in the obtaining of stabilized magnetite nanoparticles for biomedical application].

Magnetite nanoparticles (NPs) are studied as agents for magnetic resonance imaging, hyperthermia of malignant tumors, targeted drug delivery as well as anti-anemic action. One of the main problems of such NPs is their aggregation that requires creation of methods for magnetite NPs stabilization during preparation of liquid medicinal forms on their basis. The present work is devoted to the possibility of mexidol (2-ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine succinate) use for solubilization of magnetite NPs in hydrophilic medium. For this purpose, the condensate produced by electron-beam evaporation and

Influence of nanoscale zero-valent iron and magnetite nanoparticles on anaerobic digestion performance and macrolide, aminoglycoside, β-lactam resistance genes reduction.

The effect of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) and magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) on anaerobic digestion (AD) performance was investigated through a series of 100-day semi-continuous mesophilic anaerobic digestions. The results indicated that biogas production had increased by 24.44% and 21.66% with the addition of 0.5 g/L Fe3O4 NPs and 1.0 g/L NZVI, respectively. Besides, the abundance of five widespread antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) (ermF, ermA, ermT, aac(6')-IB, blaOXA-1) was also studied. The decrease in abundance of aac(6')-IB and blaOXA-1 was observed during the AD process wit

Conjugation of hydrazine to PEGylated silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles as pH-responsive magnetic nanocarriers for covalent loading and controlled release of doxorubicin.

Breast cancer is a major health issue among women, and doxorubicin (DOX) is a commonly used treatment. However, its clinical application is limited by its considerable toxicity. This study introduces an acidity-responsive magnetite nanoparticle-based nanocarrier for effective breast cancer treatment. The magnetite nanoparticles were initially coated with [3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-propyl]-trimethoxysilane, an epoxysilane cross-linker, to enhance their stability and functional properties. Subsequently, NH2-PEG-COOH was conjugated to epoxy-functionalized silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles to impro

Delivery and assessment of a CRISPR/nCas9-based genome editing system on in vitro models of mucopolysaccharidoses IVA assisted by magnetite-based nanoparticles.

Mucopolysaccharidosis IV A (MPS IVA) is a lysosomal disorder caused by mutations in the GALNS gene. Consequently, the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) keratan sulfate and chondroitin 6-sulfate accumulate in the lysosomal lumen. Although enzyme replacement therapy has shown essential advantages for the patients, several challenges remain to overcome, such as the limited impact on the bone lesion and recovery of oxidative profile. Recently, we validated a CRISPR/nCas9-based gene therapy with promising results in an in vitro MPS IVA model. In this study, we have expanded the use of this CRISPR/nCas9 sys
