Obovatol isolated from Magnolia obovata enhances pentobarbital-induced sleeping time: Possible involvement of GABAA receptors/chloride channel activation.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of obovatol isolated from Magnolia obovata on pentobarbital-induced sleeping behaviors and to determine whether these effects were mediated by GABA(A) receptors/chloride channel activation, using a western blot technique and Cl(-) sensitive fluorescence probe. GABA(A) receptors subunits expression and chloride influx were investigated in cultured cerebellar granule cells. Obovatol (0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mg/kg) prolonged the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital (42 mg/kg). In addition, obovatol (20 and 50 microM) significantly increased Cl(-) influx in

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: Outcome domains are aspects of a condition that matter to patients and clinicians and can be measured to assess treatment effects. For tinnitus, examples include 'tinnitus loudness' and 'ability to concentrate'. This study focuses on the first stage of agreeing which outcome domains should be measured in all clinical trials of tinnitus. Crucially, it involves identifying outcome domains, prior to a voting process. This article describes how we effectively involved patients in that study design process, and reflects on the impact of their input. The study first compiled a

Honokiol, a Neolignan from Magnolia officinalis, Attenuated Fructose-Induced Hepatic Fat Accumulation by Improving Intestinal Barrier Function in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Fructose (Fru) consumption has been suggested to contribute to metabolic diseases including metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), at least in part, by disturbing intestinal barrier function and intestinal nitric oxide (NO) homeostasis. Honokiol (Hon), a neolignan found in Magnolia officinalis, has been suggested to affect intestinal integrity and barrier function. OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether Hon affects Fru-induced small intestinal permeability in settings of early MASLD. METHODS: Female 8-10-wk-old C57BL/6J mice (n = 7/group) received either a 30%

Extract of Magnoliae Flos inhibits ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis by blocking osteoclastogenesis and reducing osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.

Bone homeostasis is maintained by a balance between bone resorption by osteoclasts and bone formation by osteoblasts. Osteoporosis occurs when osteoclast activity surpasses osteoblast activity. Pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulate osteoclast differentiation and activity by increasing production of macrophage-colony stimulating factor and receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL). In this study, we investigated whether Magnoliae Flos (MF), one of the most commonly used Chinese medicinal herbs for managing rhinitis, sinusitis and headache, could effectively inhibit osteoporosis. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using Magnolia alba leaf extracts and evaluating their antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, and photocatalytic properties.

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles has recently emerged as a promising approach in nanomedicine, particularly for targeted therapeutic applications. Green synthesized (plant-based) nanoparticles have been shown to offer enhanced reduction efficiency, greater bioavailability, and improved stability compared to synthetic nanoparticles. Here, we report the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Magnolia alba leaf extract (MLE). The formation of these Magnolia-derived silver nanoparticles (MAgNPs) was verified through UV-Vis spectroscopy with a surface plasmon resonance peak a

In Vitro and In Silico Studies of Neolignans from Magnolia grandiflora L. Seeds against Human Cannabinoids and Opioid Receptors.

Magnolia grandiflora L. (Magnoliaceae) is a plant of considerable medicinal significance; its flowers and seeds have been used in various traditional remedies. Radioligand binding assays of n-hexane seeds extract showed displacement of radioligand for cannabinoid (CB1 and CB2) and opioid δ (delta), κ (kappa), and µ (mu) receptors. Bioactivity-guided fractionation afforded 4-O-methylhonokiol (1), magnolol (2), and honokiol (3), which showed higher binding to cannabinoid rather than opioid receptors in radioligand binding assays. Compounds 1-3, together with the dihydro analog of 2 (4), displaye

Elucidating the effects of ginger processing on Magnolia bark: A multi-platform strategy linking chemical composition to taste and bioactivity.

Magnolia officinalis (Houpo, HP) is a prominent Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). Despite its traditional processing with ginger to reduce irritation, enhance efficacy, and improve taste, the underlying mechanisms connecting this chemical transformation to its sensory and gastrointestinal effects are not fully understood. Existing studies lack systematic analysis of shared targets across gastrointestinal diseases and the identification of quality markers (Q-markers), limiting scientific justification for its processing and clinical use. This study therefore applied an integrated UPLC-Q-TOF/MS
