Introduction. Not infrequently, in patients with a psychiatric illness who have concomitant physical symptoms, these symptoms are often wrongly attributed to a psychiatric illness. Consequently, there is a delay in establishing the correct diagnosis, which may have an impact on the prognosis of the disease. The authors aim to present a case report of a patient with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder and conversion disorder that was later correctly diagnosed with algoneurodystrophy. The authors intend to draw attention to the importance of a careful medical history and this entity. Case P

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder associated with varied prognosis, chronic course, and duration of illness with reduced quality of life. One factor that significantly contributes to the relevant disease burden of MDD is the heterogeneous treatment response patients experience with current treatment options. A variety of experimental protocols in humans and animals have highlighted that inflammation and neuroinflammation are relevant biological factors that interact with external stimuli and neurophysiological mechanisms, and can trigger MDD. It is well establ

Traditionally, the neurobiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) has been largely considered from the perspective of the state of major depressive episodes (MDE) versus being in remission, but the current accumulation of disease markers, largely acquired cross-sectionally, is strongly suggestive of neuroprogressive aspects of MDD. This chapter focuses on the changes in disease markers involved in the reorganization of the nervous system in MDD, including the translocator protein (TSPO; an index of microglial activation), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP; an index of astroglial activatio

OBJECTIVE: To examine sexual functioning in adolescents with depression.
METHODS: Between September 2010 and March 2014, 235 participants who were between 15 and 20 years old and were unmedicated or within 1 month of beginning antidepressant treatment completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (CSFQ). They were also assessed to establish the presence of a DSM-IV-TR major depressive episode (MDE). The Student t test and χ² test were used to compare continuous and categorical variables, respectively, across partic

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric disease worldwide. The clinical use of tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)/serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRIs) for this condition have been widely accepted, but they were challenged by unacceptable side-effects, potential drug-drug interactions (DDIs) or slow onset/lack of efficacy. The endogenous opioid system is involved in stress and emotion regulatory processes and its role in MDD has been implicated. Although several KOR antagonists

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric comorbidities are common in major depressive disorder (MDD). They may worsen outcome and cause economic burden. The primary objective was to examine the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in MDD. The secondary objectives were to compare the presence of comorbidities between currently active and past MDD, and between patients with and without suicidal risk.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 250 patients with lifetime MDD and age ≥18 years were enrolled. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Thai version, was used to confirm M

Recent high-quality studies have confirmed the central role of lithium in the treatment of bipolar disorder and have established lithium as the drug of first choice for long-term prophylaxis in this condition. However, several indications for its use in unipolar major depression are also based on sound evidence. This includes lithium augmentation as a main strategy for depressed patients not responding to an antidepressant, lithium prophylaxis for recurrent unipolar depression as an alternative to prophylaxis with an antidepressant, and lithium's unique anti-suicidal properties. Lithium monoth

Interest in nonpharmaceutical supplements for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) has increased significantly, both among patients and among clinicians during the past decades. Despite the large array of antidepressants (ADs) available, many patients continue to experience relatively modest response and remission rates, in addition to a burden of side effects that can hinder treatment compliance and acceptability. In this article, we review the literature on folates and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), 2 natural compounds linked in the 1-carbon cycle metabolic pathway, for which substantial ev

Depression is a highly disabling, recurrent disease that imposes a significant burden on the individual, their close contacts, and on society. Despite the existence of treatment guidelines for major depression, management frequently falls short of these recommendations, sometimes due to inadequate doses or duration of prescribed antidepressant medication; at other times secondary to patient non-adherence to the recommended treatment. Evidence-based treatment guidelines developed by the major mental health organizations advise that patients who have experienced either a first or a recurrent epi

The association between major depressive disorder (MDD) and self-reported histories of specific physical illnesses was investigated in 320 controls and 1968 first-degree relatives and 254 spouses of probands in the NIMH Collaborative Depression study. The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Lifetime Version was used to assign Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) diagnoses and a structured self-report instrument was used to assess lifetime medical history. Lifetime MDD was diagnosed in 914 subjects, 402 of whom had been hospitalized or received somatic treatment ('treated' MDD). St

A two-stage epidemiologic study conducted between 1986 and 1988 in the southeastern United States investigated the frequency of major depressive disorder and dysthymia in 12-14 year olds. In stage one, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, a life event schedule, and a family cohesion scale were administered to a community sample of 3,283 adolescents. In stage two, 488 mother-child pairs were interviewed utilizing the Schedule for Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders in School Age Children. Although mean Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale scores were significant

BACKGROUND: Although the disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) was included in the depressive disorders (DD) section of the DSM-5, common and distinctive features between DMDD and the pre-existing DD (i.e., major depressive disorder, MDD, and persistent depressive disorder, PDD) received little scrutiny.
METHODS: Youths consecutively assessed as outpatients at two Canadian mood clinics over four years were included in the study (n = 163; mean age:13.4 ± 0.3; range:7-17). After controlling for inter-rater agreement, data were extracted from medical charts, using previously validated ch

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Shared clinical features and genetic factors in schizophrenia (SCZ), bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD) have led to the hypothesis of common pathophysiological mechanisms. This study aims to elucidate aberrant transdiagnostic structural covariance patterns across these disorders employing a multivariate analytical approach.
STUDY DESIGN: Structural magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired from a sample of 704 subjects, comprising 244 healthy controls, 119 first-episode treatment-naïve SCZ individuals, 159 BD individuals, and 182 treatmen

IMPORTANCE: Bipolar disorder (BD) often first appears in adolescence after onset of major depressive disorder (MDD), but diagnosis and treatment are commonly delayed. This delay is a concern because untreated BD is associated with adverse long-term outcomes, a more recurrent disease course and difficult-to-treat illness, and suicide attempts and deaths.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of age at MDD onset with early transition to BD and the subsequent use of psychiatric inpatient services as a severity indicator.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study analyze

BACKGROUND: Differentiating depression in major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder is challenging in clinical practice. Therefore, reliable biomarkers are urgently needed to differentiate between these diseases. This study's main objective was to assess whether cardiac autonomic function can distinguish patients with unipolar depression (UD), bipolar depression (BD), and bipolar mania (BM).
METHODS: We recruited 791 patients with mood disorders, including 191 with UD, 286 with BD, and 314 with BM, who had been drug free for at least 2 weeks. Cardiovascular status was measured using hear

Studies in non-Hispanic whites have documented higher rates of hearing loss in adults with depression versus those without depression. Data from the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to investigate associations between depression and bilateral hearing loss in Cuban-American, Mexican-American, and Puerto Rican adults 20-74 years of age. Pure tone thresholds were calculated by averaging thresholds obtained at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz separately for each ear. Hearing loss was defined as bilateral pure tone average threshold levels greater than 25 db. Lifetime history of a m

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are two highly prevalent psychiatric disorders with a high comorbidity rate, which is significantly higher rate than other combinations of mental disorders and substance use disorders. This comorbidity not only imposes a substantial disease burden on individuals but also significantly complicates clinical management, leading to more severe functional impairment, reduced treatment adherence, and increased resistance to monotherapy. AUD diagnosis varies by diagnostic system: DSM-V integrates alcohol dependence and abuse into 11 crite

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are prevalent psychiatric conditions, each affecting a substantial portion of the global population. When these conditions coexist with a Substance Use Disorder (SUD), the complexity of the clinical presentation is heightened. Herein, we describe two cases of individuals who have comorbid OCD and/or MDD and substance use disorder that highlight the importance of addressing the coexisting psychiatric illness when treating the SUD. These cases highlight the importance of tailored, multidisciplinary care, offering a potential
