Malacoplakia of the tongue complicating the site of irradiation for squamous cell carcinoma with review of the literature.

Malacoplakia is a benign and uncommon inflammatory response that develops most frequently in the genitourinary tract but has been reported at other sites. We report the case of 67-year-old man who presented with a lesion at the base of the tongue 7 months after chemoradiation for biopsy-proven invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue. The lesion showed intense avidity by positron emission tomography and was biopsied with the putative clinical diagnosis of recurrent malignancy. Histologically, the lesion showed the characteristics of malacoplakia as well as abundant intracellular gram-neg

Bilateral renal parenchymal malacoplakia presenting as fever of unknown origin: case report and review.

Malacoplakia is a rare inflammatory disorder seen most often in the urinary tract, where it is highly associated with coliform infection. Although first recognized by pathologists in 1902, it has received little attention from the infectious disease community. While there remains much uncertainty regarding the specific cause of malacoplakia, it appears to be associated with a defect in intracellular killing of ingested microorganisms by macrophages. We report a case of bilateral renal parenchymal malacoplakia that presented as fever of unknown origin, and we review 33 previously identified cas

Renal Malacoplakia Following Obstetric Intervention: A Rare Cause of Acute Kidney Injury in a Young Woman.

Introduction: Renal malacoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease, often associated with immunosuppression and persistent Gram-negative infections, particularly Escherichia coli. Case Presentation: We present a case involving a 31-year-old woman with hypertension, gestational diabetes, and prior uterine curettage after labor induction for preeclampsia at 23 weeks. She developed urinary sepsis post-procedure. Imaging revealed bilateral nephromegaly, while laboratory tests showed acute kidney injury (KDIGO stage III), anemia, and thrombocytopenia. Blood and urine cultures grew Escherichia

Xanthogranulomatous cystitis with malacoplakia, leading to spontaneous intraperitoneal perforation of the urinary bladder in a 9-year-old girl.

A 9-year-old girl presented with sudden onset continuous abdomen pain, oliguria and constipation for 2 days. Ultrasound of the abdomen and voiding cystourethrography revealed intraperitoneal perforation of the urinary bladder. Cystoscopy showed two perforations at the dome of the bladder. Open surgical repair of the perforations was performed and biopsy was taken from their edges. Histopathological examination of biopsied material revealed malacoplakia with xanthogranulomatous cystitis. The patient was doing well at 15 months follow-up. Xanthogranulomatous cystitis with malacoplakia leading to

Case report: A rare case of malacoplakia resembling a malignant tumor of the cervix: a case report and review of the literature.

Malacoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease that mostly affects the gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract of immunocompromised patients; malacoplakia rarely effects the female reproductive tract. Here, we report a 56-year-old patient who underwent thymectomy for thymoma and myasthenia gravis prior to developing cervical and vaginal malacoplakia. The patient presented with recurrent vaginal bleeding. We discovered that there were alterations in the cervical cauliflower pattern during colposcopy, which is suggestive of cervical cancer. Pathological examination of the lesion tissue sh

Malacoplakia of the cervix and corpus uteri: a light microscopic, electron microscopic, and X-ray microprobe analysis of a case.

Malacoplakia in the female genital tract is rare. A case of a 71-year-old woman with malacoplakia of the cervical mucosa and endometrium is described. By light microscopy, von Hansemann cells containing calcified bodies (Michaelis-Gutmann bodies) could be visualized. Similar formations could also be seen extracellularly. Typical Michaelis-Gutmann bodies with electron-dense areas, as well as with pale centers and a dark periphery, could be identified by electron microscopy. Occasional trilaminar bacteria were seen. X-ray microanalysis indicated the presence of silica, sulfur, chloride, calcium,

Malakoplakia of Larynx: A Case Report and Literature Review of Localized Malakoplakia of Larynx.

BACKGROUND: Malakoplakia is a very rare benign granulomatous disease, which can invade multiple organ systems, and is often related to bacterial infection and weak immunity. It is rarely occurred in the larynx, once this happens, the patient would complain of cough, hoarseness, dysphagia, and even dyspnea. METHODS: We reported a case of malakoplakia of larynx. The patient complained of hoarseness and cough. Her lesion was located in the right false vocal cord. six case reports of malacoplakia in larynx were compiled from the literature and integrated with this case report. RESULTS: After exc

Granulomatous nephritis.

Granulomatous nephritis (renal tuberculosis, malacoplakia, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, and echinococcus disease) represents an infectious process that is characterized by (renal) parenchymal destruction and consists of a chronic cellular reaction and mature, mononuclear infiltrate. These infections may mimic one another as well as other renal infections and cystic and neoplastic disorders. This article addresses some of the unique aspects and similarities of these varied disease entities and their management.

Malakoplakia Involving the Maxilla: A Case Report and a Review of the Literature.

Malakoplakia is a rare inflammatory disorder which typically occurs in immunocompromised patients secondary to impaired bactericidal activity of macrophages. While this entity commonly arises in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts, lesions of the head and neck have been reported only rarely, with oral cavity involvement reported in 3 cases. The most common presentation of head and neck malakoplakia is that of a cutaneous flesh-colored papule or nodule. This case report, however, illustrates the first time malakoplakia is identified affecting the maxilla and maxillary alveolar ridge m

Heterotopic pancreas and malakoplakia in abscessing intrahepatic tumor - a case report.

OBJECTIVES: The presence of heterotopic pancreatic tissue or malacoplakia in the liver is very uncommon and rarely becomes symptomatic. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report of a 57-year-old female patient who received left-sided hemihepatectomy due to a tumor resembling intrahepatic abscess. Histopathological examination revealed both heterotopic pancreas and malakoplakia. CONCLUSIONS: We discuss this case in relation to the existing literature. As far as we know, this is the first reported case of simultaneous presence of these two rare entities.

FDG-Avid Malakoplakia of the Ureter Mimicking Malignancy.

Malacoplakia is a rare chronic granulomatous disease and frequently associated with Escherichia coli infection. We describe the contrast-enhanced CT and FDG PET/CT findings in a case of bladder and ureteral malakoplakia with E. coli urinary tract infection. Contrast-enhanced CT showed multiple enhancing mural nodules in the bladder and left ureter, ranging from several millimeters to 3.1 cm. The ureteral nodules showed significantly increased FDG uptake with SUVmax of 20.4, due to histiocyte, lymphocyte, and plasma cell infiltrates revealed by histopathology.

Granulomatous and xanthogranulomatous prostatitis: A case report.

Granulomatous prostatitis is a rare condition that is diagnosed only by histopathological examination. Though rare, the condition was reported to have different presentations (mimicking prostate cancer or prostatitis and prostatic abscess) and to have different etiologies which classified it into three main entities; nonspecific (idiopathic), post-surgery, and specific. Specific granulomatous prostatitis is further sub-classified to infective, xanthogranulomatous, Malacoplakia and associated with systemic granulomatous disease and allergy. We hereby report a rare case of xanthogranulomatous pr

Renal Infections.

This review discusses the various gross and histologic findings seen in renal infections due to bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mycobacteria. It is crucially important to separate infectious processes in the kidney from other inflammatory or neoplastic processes, as this will have a major impact on therapy. We describe the diagnostic features of renal infections with a specific focus on the differential diagnosis and other processes that may mimic infection. The topics discussed include acute bacterial pyelonephritis, chronic bacterial pyelonephritis, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, malacopl

Appendiceal malakoplakia: a review of the literature and case presentation.

Background∕Objectives: Malakoplakia is an uncommon clinicopathological entity defined by the accumulation of dysfunctional macrophages containing undigested bacterial remnants and pathognomonic Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. Although it most frequently involves the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the colon, rectum, and rectosigmoid junction, appendiceal involvement remains rare. This case represents only the fourth reported occurrence of appendiceal malakoplakia in a young, immunocompetent adult without notable comorbidities, underscoring its exceptional clinical presentation. [Echography and scrotal masses. Apropos of 28 verified cases].

The scrotal masses are a frequent motive of consultation. The etiologic diagnosis of scrotal abnormalities is not always resolved by an accurate physical examination. From january 1985 to december 1987, 30 ultrasound examinations were performed. In the same period 245 patients were admitted for a scrotal mass. In a retrospective study the clinical diagnosis and ultrasound examination were compared with surgical and/or pathological findings, concerning 7 scrotal trauma, 8 hydrocele, 6 tumors, 4 epididymo-orchitis, 3 torsion, 1 epididymal cyst and 1 malacoplakia. The ultrasound findings correlat

Lymphadenopathy due to fatal histiocytic proliferative disorder containing Michaelis-Gutmann bodies.

A 59-year-old white man had generalized lymphadenopathy, fever, weight loss, and hypercalcemia. Histologic examination of seven lymph nodes from three different anatomic sites revealed a diffuse histiocytic infiltrate containing numerous typical Michaelis-Gutmann (MG) bodies. Histochemical and immunohistochemical results confirmed the histiocytic nature of the predominant cell within the infiltrate. Approximately equal numbers of residual normal B-cells, T-helper, and T-suppressor cells were present. Electron microscopy revealed extracellular and intracellular MG bodies, many of which were mem
