Human Rabies in the WHO Southeast Asia Region: Forward Steps for Elimination.

There are eleven Member States in the WHO southeast Asia region (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste) of which eight are endemic for rabies. More than 1.4 billion people in the Region are at risk of rabies infection, and approximately 45% of worldwide rabies deaths occur in Asia. Dog bites account for 96% of human rabies cases. Progress in preventing human rabies through control of the disease in dogs has been slow due to various factors. Innovative control tools and techniques have been develop

Evolving global trends in PCOS burden: a three-decade analysis (1990-2021) with projections to 2036 among adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting adolescent and young adult females, yet global data on its burden and trends remains limited. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 for females aged 10-24 years in 204 countries (1990-2021). Metrics included cases, age-standardized incidence (ASIR), prevalence (ASPR), disability-adjusted life years (ASDR), and average annual percentage changes (AAPCs). Future trends (2022-2036) and disease reduction gaps were assessed. RESULTS: From 1990 to 2021, global PCOS cases increased

Clinical case of co-infection: Dengue fever and respiratory mycoplasmosis in a child.

According to WHO, dengue fever (DF) is currently endemic to more than 100 countries in various regions of Africa, America, and Asia; outbreaks have been reported in Europe. In the Russian Federation, there is a much smaller proportion of children among those infected due to the imported nature of the infection. We described a clinical case of imported dengue fever in an adolescent girl in Moscow after a 5-day vacation. Despite the fact that during the examination at the hospital in the Maldives, DENV arbovirus antigen was isolated in the blood by immunochromatographic rapid test, the course of

Estimating dietary micronutrient supply and the prevalence of inadequate intakes from national Food Balance Sheets in the South Asia regiona.

Micronutrient deficiencies continue to be a major public health concern worldwide with many South Asian countries suffering a significant proportion of the global burden. A lack of nationally representative data on micronutrient deficiencies hampers sustained action to address the problem. Using data on the national food supply produced by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, and international food composition tables, the present study estimated the prevalence of inadequacy of seven micronutrients (vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, folate, vitamin B-12, zinc and calcium)

Unraveling Dengue Virus Diversity in Asia: An Epidemiological Study through Genetic Sequences and Phylogenetic Analysis.

Dengue virus (DENV) is the causative agent of dengue. Although most infected individuals are asymptomatic or present with only mild symptoms, severe manifestations could potentially devastate human populations in tropical and subtropical regions. In hyperendemic regions such as South Asia and Southeast Asia (SEA), all four DENV serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4) have been prevalent for several decades. Each DENV serotype is further divided into multiple genotypes, reflecting the extensive diversity of DENV. Historically, specific DENV genotypes were associated with particular geogr

Disability among Older People: Analysis of Data from Disability Surveys in Six Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

This analysis of surveys from six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) aimed to (i) estimate the prevalence of disability among older adults and (ii) compare experiences and participation in key life areas among older people with and without disabilities which may show vulnerability during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were analysed from district-level or national surveys in Cameroon, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Nepal and the Maldives, which across the six databases totalled 3499 participants aged 60 years and above including 691 people with disabilities. Disability was common among adults 60+,

The Changing Pulse of a Region: Ischemic Heart Disease and Its Drivers in the Asia-Pacific, 1990-2021.

Ischemic heart disease remains the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality globally, yet the burden in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and Oceania has followed a distinct trajectory that contrasts with global trends. Despite declining age-standardized rates reported in higher-income regions, these areas continue to experience rising absolute prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years, reflecting the combined effects of population aging, rapid urbanization, and persistent metabolic and environmental risk factors. Smaller nations and lower-resource settings, including Timor-Leste, th

Epidemiology of cervical cancer and HPV infection in Asia and Oceania.

Cancer will continue to be a major source of morbidity and mortality globally during the foreseeable future. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancer is now a serious problem in both women and men. The most common HPV-related cancer is cervical cancer in females and oropharyngeal cancer in males. Eastern Africa has a high age-standardized incidence of HPV-related cancers, followed in order by Southern Africa, Central Africa, and then the rest of Africa. Among Asian and Oceania countries, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Maldives, and Myanmar have extremely high age-standard

[Disease spectrum among guests and staff of an international luxury beach resort in the tropics].

BACKGROUND: Diseases of travelers upon returning home are described in numerous publications. However, we have limited data on the disease spectrum and the reasons for medical consultations during a trip. METHODS: Over the period of one year, we analyzed all patient visits to the inhouse medical center of a major 5‑star beach resort of an international chain in the Maldives. RESULTS: Around 6% of all guests sought medical consultation at least once during their stay. The main reasons for consultation were sea water induced external otitis and-in some cases-severe (2nd degree) sunburn. Staff

Seeding the Spine: Salmonella Java Discitis and Osteomyelitis After Traveller's Bacteraemia.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella infection usually causes self-limiting gastroenteritis, but a minority of cases are complicated by bacteraemia and extraintestinal focal infection. Vertebral discitis and osteomyelitis are rare complications, most often described in patients with diabetes, haemoglobinopathy, or immunosuppression. We describe a 67-year-old man with hypertension and previous percutaneous coronary intervention who attended the emergency department five times over six weeks with fever, rigors, diarrhoea, and worsening thoracic back pain after travel to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Cancer research in South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries.

Cancer is a major global health threat, with 35 million new cases projected by 2050, predominantly in low-income and middle-income-countries. Within South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries, a notable gap in cancer research investment and output compared with high-income countries highlights the need to strengthen research capacity. The rising cancer incidence across SAARC countries is not being matched by local research, particularly in clinical trials in molecular biology, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and cancer vaccines. This paucity of research is problematic

Endosymbiotic Wolbachia of parasitic filarial nematodes as drug targets.

The parasitic nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B. timori cause a dreadful disease in humans known as lymphatic filariasis, which afflicts more than 120 million people worldwide. As per recent epidemiologic estimates on prevalence of W. bancrofti and B. malayi, about 428 million people are at risk, with 28 million microfilaria carriers and 21 million clinical cases spread out in 13 States and 5 Union Territories of India. The Indian subcontinent that comprises Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka harbours 50 per cent of the world's lymphatic filarial disease burden.

Is child anemia associated with early childhood development? A cross-sectional analysis of nine Demographic and Health Surveys.

Anemia is a significant public health problem in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with young children being especially vulnerable. Iron deficiency is a leading cause of anemia and prior studies have shown associations between low iron status/iron deficiency anemia and poor child development outcomes. In LMICs, 43% of children under the age of five years are at risk of not meeting their developmental potential. However, few studies have examined associations between anemia status and early childhood development (ECD) in large population-based surveys. We examined the associations
