Audit of foot and ankle surgeons' management of acute peroneal tendon tears and review of management protocols.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this audit was to identify whether there is consistent and successful management of acute peroneal tendon tears within orthopaedic foot and ankle consultants in the Wessex area of the UK. It was suspected that there was an absence of consistency between surgeons' practices and a more evidenced based management protocol could be developed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire of the orthopaedic surgeons in Wessex investigated whether there was consistency in surgical management of peroneal tears. RESULTS: Our results demonstrate that each of the nine surgeons' manag

Management of Bell's palsy in children: an audit of current practice, review of the literature and a proposed management algorithm.

OBJECTIVE: We carried out a complete audit cycle, reviewing our management of paediatric patients with Bell's palsy within 72 h of symptom onset. Our protocol was published after the initial audit in 2009, and a re-audit was carried out in 2011. We aimed to improve our current practice in accordance with up-to-date evidence-based research on the use of steroids and antivirals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 17 patients were included in the first cycle, but only eight patients met our inclusion and exclusion criteria for the re-audit. We assessed documentation of House-Brackmann (HB) grade o

An audit on the assessment and management of osteoporosis in a Parkinson's and related diseases clinic in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonian syndromes are at increased risk of falls and should be actively screened and treated for osteoporosis. In 2024, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) revised their practice guidelines for diagnosing and managing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men aged over 50 years. OBJECTIVE: We conducted the first Australian study to audit these guidelines in patients with PD and atypical parkinsonian syndromes. METHOD: We audited all PD, Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy a

Management of surgical patients on opioid replacement therapy: An audit of current practice.

Patients on opioid replacement therapy hospitalised with acute pain represent a clinical challenge and have poorer perioperative outcomes. There is limited evidence relating to acute pain management of this complex cohort. The primary objectives of this retrospective audit was to establish the number of patients who are admitted on opioid replacement therapy with an acute pain condition under surgical services and evaluate the management of these patients to determine consistency of pain management practices. Secondarily, we aimed to evaluate the documentation of opioid replacement therapy in

The challenges of managing gout in primary care: Results of a best-practice audit.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this project was to determine the effects of a package of care for gout in primary care. METHOD: An audit of gout management in a single rural medical practice was undertaken before (in 2012) and after (in 2015) the introduction of the package of care reflecting guidelines in gout management. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant increase in the number of individuals commenced on allopurinol ≤100 mg/d and a decrease in the number commenced on allopurinol ≥200 mg/d (P <0.001). The number of times each patient had serum urate tested between 2012 a

An audit on the management of lymphogranuloma venereum in a sexual health clinic in London, UK.

We performed an audit on the management of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) against the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) guidelines. Sixty-three cases of LGV were diagnosed in 60 men who have sex with men (MSM). Fifty-six out of 63 (89%) episodes were treated in accordance with the guidelines. Although all eligible patients were offered an HIV test, 10% and 29% of patients were not offered syphilis or hepatitis C tests, respectively, at the time of LGV diagnosis. Partner notification was not possible in a third of cases. Several patients were re-infected with rectal Chlamydia

Audit of nasal fracture management in accident and emergency in a district general hospital.

RATIONALE: Nasal fractures are a common occurrence in accident and emergency and dealt with by inexperienced senior house officers. This can lead to inappropriate X-rays being performed, no proper documentation of septal haematomas and often no follow-up with a specialist team leading to in some cases complex cosmetic surgery whereas simple manipulation may have sufficed. METHOD: We report an ambispective audit carried out on nasal fracture management in a busy district general hospital over a 6-month period. RESULTS: 46 patients were seen 24 in the first 3 months and 22 the next three. 10 h

A multidistrict audit of the management of chlamydial PID in genitourinary medicine clinics in Yorkshire.

In response to recent reviews of practice of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) management, a multidistrict audit involving eight genitourinary clinics within the Yorkshire region was carried out. This audit reports the referral patterns of patients, physical signs and microscopy findings at the first genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic attendance, antibiotic treatment and follow-up data as well as health adviser involvement and partner participation for 68 patients diagnosed with chlamydial PID. Twenty-eight (41.2%) patients presented with symptoms of less than or equal to four weeks duration,

The influence of medical audit on the management of epistaxis in three district general Hospitals.

The implementation of audit in most hospital departments in the UK has been instigated by the guidelines set out by the Royal Colleges. This paper aims to demonstrate the results of regular subregional audit meetings in the ENT departments involving three District Hospitals in East Anglia. We report the effects of audit meetings in improving the management of epistaxis, whereby a protocol for treatment and discharge was established, the duration of the nasal pack left in situ was reduced, and the material of the pack was changed.

Prospective National Audit of the Anesthetic Management of Children With Long QT Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: It is recognized that the perioperative anesthetic management of children with long QT syndrome may be complex, as they are at risk of life-threatening arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia, torsades des pointes, ventricular fibrillation, or severe bradycardia. There is uncertainty regarding the incidence of complications as well as which techniques might be acceptable or preferable in this group of patients. AIMS: In collaboration with the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Network, we conducted a prospective audit of the anesthetic management, complications, and outcomes of chi

A pilot project on the management of osteoporosis in primary care: results of the audit cycle.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a major public health problem with the ageing population in the UK. However, there is no known national algorithm for the management of osteoporosis in primary care. Therefore, a treatment pathway was developed in secondary care for patients in the community. AIM: This audit cycle investigates whether patients at a GP practice with a population of 14 000 have been appropriately identified, coded as osteoporosis, treated, and have followed the recommended pathway. METHOD: A search of the practice clinical system was undertaken for three groups of patients coded as:

Retrospective Audit of the Management of Anal Insertion of Foreign Bodies: A Holistic Approach.

Most patients with voluntary anal insertion of a foreign body (IFB) present to the emergency department and are then managed by the surgical team. This report reviews the medical literature on IFB and includes results of a chart review of operative logged interventions and clinically coded procedures for anal IFBs at a single acute hospital in the United Kingdom between May 2009 and September 2013. The objective was to establish the current practice in the management of anal IFB and update a framework for the initial workup, surgical procedure, and appropriate mental health intervention.

Auditing emergency management programmes: Measuring leading indicators of programme performance.

Emergency Management Programmes benefit from review and measurement against established criteria. By measuring current vs required programme elements for their actual currency, completeness and effectiveness, the resulting timely reports of achievements and documentation of identified gaps can effectively be used to rationally support prioritised improvement. Audits, with their detailed, triangulated and objectively weighted processes, are the ultimate approach in terms of programme content measurement. Although Emergency Management is often presented as a wholly separate operational mechanism
