Are Radiographic Changes in the Mandibular Canal Associated With Bone Mineral Density?

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis, highly prevalent among postmenopausal women, significantly reduces bone density and increases the risk of fractures. Cortical bone, which constitutes the largest calcium deposit in the human skeleton, is primarily affected in various conditions, including osteoporosis. Due to its visibility in panoramic radiography, the cortical area of the mandibular canal could be valuable in assessing decreases in bone mineral density (BMD). PURPOSE: The study aimed to characterize and compare changes in the cortices of the mandibular canal between normal, osteopenic, and osteopor

Anatomical features of the mandibular canal and their clinical significance - review of literature.

The clinical issues related to the anatomical variation of the mandibular canal have been extensively analyzed since the 19th century. Evolving dentistry techniques and advancements in the prosthetics forced to collect detailed information about anatomical variations of the mandibular canal due to its neurovascular content. Therefore, its radiographic imaging became an essential part of the oral surgery, in order to avoid complications resulted from an accidental damage of the mandibular canal.

A rare case of trifid mandibular canal with bilateral retromolar foramina.

There are many reported anatomical variations of the mandibular canal. Consequently, there is great variation in the retromolar area, such as the quantity, size, and location of the retromolar foramen (RMF), the bony entrance of the retromolar canal (RMC). These variations allow for different accessory innervations to the mandibular molars and their adjacent buccal tissue because the RMC contains neurovascular bundles. Consideration of these anatomical variations is crucial for avoiding complications in anesthesia, implant placement, and surgery. However, the rarer canal types are often only i

Mandibular Retromolar Foramen and Canal - A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The retromolar fossa is a small triangular area posterolateral to 3rd molar region in the mandible. The retromolar fossa often contains the retromolar foramen (RMF) as an anatomical variant. When the RMF is present, the foramen is connected with the mandibular canal (MC) through another canal known as the retromolar canal (RMC). RMC contains neurovascular bundle, which gives additional supply to the mandible. Although few studies have been conducted in past, a lacunae in comprehensive review is lacking. Although, these variations posed challenging situations for the practicing su

Radiographic proximity of the mandibular third molar to the inferior alveolar canal.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the panoramic radiographic distance from the mandibular third molar tooth to the inferior alveolar canal. STUDY DESIGN: Five hundred sixty mandibular third molars were evaluated by panoramic radiography. The teeth were grouped into erupted vs unerupted and further subdivided by tooth angulation. The distance from the most inferior aspect of the mandibular third molar tooth to the superior border of the inferior alveolar canal was measured with digital calipers. A t test was performed to compare erupted and unerupted teeth, and ANOVA was used to determine if a significa

Three independent canals in the mesial root of a mandibular first molar.

Endodontic therapy was performed in a mandibular first molar with three canals in the mesial root. The mesiobuccal and the mesiolingual canals were found in their normal locations. The third was located in the middle of the distance between the other two. Radiographically, it ended in its own distinct foramen. Many reports deal with three orifices in the mesial root, but very few describe three independent canals, indicating a rare anatomical configuration. To locate the third possible intermediate canal it was suggested to reduce the mesial dentinal wall of the pulp chamber after instrumentin

Bifid Mandibular Canal: A Proportional Meta-Analysis of Computed Tomography Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Growing body of evidences showed different grades in prevalence of bifid mandibular canals. Because the previous reviews focused solely on patient-level occurrence, hemi-mandible-level prevalence, bilateral symmetry, length, and diameter of bifid mandibular canals were required to be estimated collectively. The research question of this meta-analysis was "What is the prevalence of bifid mandibular canal among patients seeking computed tomography examinations"? MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vivo, computed tomography, and cross-sectional studies were eligible. Studies, with less than

Measurement of mandibular incisive canal diameter using cone beam computed tomography.

Cone beam computed tomography was used for measuring the diameter of a Mandibular incisive canal. The dental practice can now visualize small bone structures with low dose and high spatial resolution due to the introduction of CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). Therefore, it is of interest to measure the diameter of the MIC (Mandibular Incisive Canal) using the CBCT. Fifty CBCT scans obtained for implant placement preoperative planning were included in the study material. Observers carefully examined the CBCT data to determine the MIC's presence & position. The inner diameter of the MIC was

Automatic mandibular third molar and mandibular canal relationship determination based on deep learning models for preoperative risk reduction.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores the application of deep learning models for classifying the spatial relationship between mandibular third molars and the mandibular canal using cone-beam computed tomography images. Accurate classification of this relationship is essential for preoperative planning, as improper assessment can lead to complications such as inferior alveolar nerve injury during extractions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dataset of 305 cone-beam computed tomography scans, categorized into three classes (not contacted, nearly contacted, and contacted), was meticulously annotated and val

Uncommon Canal Anatomy: Identification and Treatment of Middle Distal Canal in Mandibular First Molars-A Report on Two Cases.

Mandibular molars often exhibit high variation in canal anatomy. Failing to identify these variations can negatively impact treatment outcomes. This report describes two cases of mandibular first molars with middle distal canals. In Case 1, the patient was a United Arab Emirates (UAE) national who presented with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis; whereas in Case 2, the patient had a previously treated tooth and chronic apical abscess. Both cases were treated with nonsurgical root canal therapy, and the extra canals were identified using magnification and troughing with ultrasonic tips. In Case

Characterisation of Root Canal Configurations and Accessory Canals in Mandibular Incisors: A Micro-Computed Tomography Study on a Malaysian Subpopulation.

This micro-CT study evaluated the root canals of 135 mandibular incisors in a Malaysian subpopulation using Vertucci (1984) and Ahmed et al. (2017), whilst the accessory canals were classified using the Ahmed et al. (2018) system. The Chi-square and Fisher Exact tests were used for analysis (p = 0.05). Results showed that 53% of the teeth had Type I/1MI1 canals, whilst Type III/1MI1-2-1 canals occurred significantly less often in 15% of teeth (p < 0.001). Non-classifiable Vertucci canals occurred in 21% of teeth, all of which were classified using the Ahmed et al. system. Accessory canals were
