Maxillofacial trauma is rare in children younger than the age of 5 years (range 0.6%-1.2%), and they can require different clinical treatment strategies compared with fractures in the adult population because of concerns regarding mandibular growth and development of dentition. A 5-year-old girl with a history of falling from a bicycle 7 hours earlier was referred to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Multislice computed tomographic examination demonstrated a bilateral fracture of the mandibular condyle neck associated with minimal fracture of the alveolar ridge of the maxilla.

Osteochondroma (OC) of temporo mandibular joint is a rare, slow growing, benign tumor that causes a progressive enlargement of the condyle, usually resulting in facial asymmetry, temporo mandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, limited mouth opening and malocclusion. Pain is rarely associated with this tumor. OC is composed of cartilaginous and osseous tissues. Radiographically, there is unilaterally enlarged condyle usually with an exophytic outgrowth of the tumor from the condylar head. We present a rare case of osteochondroma of right mandibular condyle in a 45-year-old male who reported with pa

AIM: In the past, fractures of the mandibular condylar process were, as a rule, treated conservatively. At the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia, our doctrine was changed in 2002 on the basis of preliminary results and reports in the literature, and these fractures were started to be treated surgically by open reduction and internal fixation with miniplates and screws, which led to good results and a shorter rehabilitation period. The goal of this study was to determine the safety and efficiency of surgical treatment, as well as t

A total of 356 patients with mandibular condyle fractures were studied regarding associated dental injuries. One third of the patients had injured teeth, on average, 3.7 teeth had been injured per accident. Dental traumas were distributed equally between the anterior (incisors and canines) and posterior teeth (premolars and molars) in both jaws. In unilateral condylar fracture cases maxillary dental injuries involved more often premolars and/or molars of the fracture side than those of the nonfracture side. The mean number of dental traumas in the mandible was higher in cases of simultaneous m

A case is reported of a woman aged 25 with a dislocation of the right mandibular condyle into the middle cranial fossa. The most striking clinical feature is a strongly limited mandibular movement and the fixation of the mandible in the dislocated position. Adequate radiographic examination including tomography is necessary to obtain the proper diagnosis and to determine the position of the condyle and the displaced bony fragments of the cranial base. Early diagnosis and treatment are very important for a successful reposition. In the described patient manual reposition of the dislocated condy

The purpose of this article is to present four new cases of peripheral osteoma of the mandibular condyle and the literature review. A retrospective study of files from our Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery over the last 6 years revealed four cases of peripheral osteomas located in the area of the mandibular condyle. Diagnostic procedure included clinical, radiographic, and histologic criteria. Gardner's syndrome was excluded from patient history and clinical evaluation. One patient had only an aesthetic disturbance, with facial swelling, and the other three patients presented distur

We present a case of post-traumatic intracranial dislocation of an unfractured mandibular condyle in a 17-year old female patient associated with multiple skull base fractures. Computed tomography (CT) findings are illustrated, and also postoperative CT is described. The article underlines the pivotal role of CT in the early diagnosis and in the investigation of additional brain lesions and complications.

BACKGROUND: Over the years, the treatment to be chosen for the resolution of condylar fractures has been discussed with great concern. Treatment depends on the type and location of the fracture, as well as other associated factors such as facial injuries and concurrent diseases.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to make a review of the different criteria to establish a diagnosis and treatment to resolve mandibular condyle fractures, according to the evolution of the years and what this entails.
DISCUSSION: Management of condylar fractures remains controversial among surgeons. Howeve

The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) is increasing worldwide and so are its consequences. Its oral manifestations are infrequent, occurring in approximately 3% of all cases. Although the primary lesion occurs as a pulmonary infection, the extrapulmonary infections have also shown an increase over the past few years. These infections generally involve the head and neck through haematogenous or lymphatic routes. The clinical presentation may be as an ulcer, granuloma, orofacial TB, TB of the salivary glands or tuberculous lymphadenitis. Rarely, secondary oral manifestations associated with pulmona

A rare case of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) located in the mandibular condyle in a 10-year-old boy is presented. The patient came to our attention for a sudden swelling in the right temporomandibular region, the mouth opening was not reduced. A rapid growing mass, depicting soft tissue invasion, in the right condyle of the mandible was found. Clinically and radiographically it resembled to a malignant lesion. The surgical excision of the mandibular condyle allowed a complete removal of the lesion. The histological examination revealed a pseudocystic expanding osteolytic lesion containing blood-f

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to analyze the principal variables that determine the choice of the method of treatment and the outcome in condylar fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 104 mandibular condyle fractures to analyze and determine the relation between the principal clinical variables and the postoperative results. All patients underwent a clinic-radiologic investigation focusing on fracture remodeling, evolution, dental occlusion, and symmetry of the mandible. We analyzed the influence of the preoperative clinical variables (level of

Bifid mandibular condyle, usually diagnosed on routine radiographic examination, is described in the literature as a rare entity. Its cause is controversial, and it has no predilection by sex or ethnic background. Dental professionals should have some knowledge of this anatomic abnormality, as well as its implications for function and appropriate treatment modalities, so that they can be alert to this potential diagnosis. This paper reports an unusual case of bifid mandibular condyle with possible traumatic cause, with emphasis on the radiographic and tomographic findings.

A review of medical literature on the various principles of medical care of condylar fractures confirms that the treatment is still controversial. For a long period of time, the conservative functional treatment of condylar fractures was a dominant philosophy. However, rigid internal fixation of condylar fractures is increasingly accepted as an alternative which presents an improved stability provided by the use of plate and screw fixation techniques. The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical and radiographic long-term results of patients with condylar fractures treated between 1984

Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle is extremely rare. An unusual case of a 32-year-old man is reported. Throughout a two-year period the patient suffered from intractable pain in the left T. M. J. region, anterior dislocation of the condylar head, malocclusion and facial asymmetry. Radiologic examination revealed that the cartilaginous cap of an overgrowth had functioned as an articular cartilage. A "pseudo articulation" was created with the prominent articular eminence and allowed an almost free movement of the mandible. Review of the seven reported cases revealed that the rare occurren

The human temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is involved in vital functions such as feeding and talking, while its disorder prevalence is reported to be between 5% and 12%. Functional evaluation using quantitative motion analysis tools is interesting in order to better understand normal and abnormal TMJ behavior. But, for the same mandibular displacement, left and right condyles will most certainly give different motion representation: both condyles showing a different shape and volume, being most of the time asymmetric and highly individual. This study performs quantification on relative left and

Osteochondroma of condyle is an exophytic lesion that arises from the cortex of bone and is capped with cartilage. It is one of the most common benign tumors of the bone. It usually appears in endochondral bones. In the mandible, it occurs most frequently at the condyle or coronoid processes. There has been ambiguity in understanding the nature of osteochondroma, whether it is neoplastic or just a reactive phenomenon. Here, we are presenting a case report of a 43-year-old male patient with a chief complaint of deviation of jaw toward the right side and progressive facial asymmetry for the past
