Mandibular fractures in children. A retrospective study.

This study reviews the treatment of mandibular fractures in children for the period 1986-1995. The sample included 107 children under 15 years of age, which were studied by age, sex, cause and type of fracture, method of treatment and complications. The children were divided into four groups according to the development of the dentition: 0-5 years, 6-9 years, 10-12 years and 13-15 years. Boys to girls ratio was 3.46:1 and the highest incidence was observed in boys over 13 years of age. Associated injuries were more common in younger children (56%). Most of the fractures were the results of tra

Lag screw fixation of mandibular angle fractures.

This article presents a technique of applying lag screws for treating fractures of the mandibular angle. A review of 30 patients who had lag screws placed to treat such fractures showed that it is an extremely useful, but technique-sensitive, method of providing rigid internal fixation. The advantages and complications of this technique over bone-plate fixation are discussed.

Mandibular fractures in an urban trauma center.

The hospital records of 307 patients sustaining mandibular fractures between 1980 and 1984 were reviewed. The patient population consisted of 79% males, with precipitating events usually being fist fights (47%) and assaults with a blunt object (18%). The most common fracture involved the body (30%), followed by the angle (21%) and the condyles (19%). Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) was the preferred method of treatment (42%); however, a large number of patients were treated by internal fixation (31%) or external stabilization (11%). Despite the large number with internal fixation procedures, the

Current Frequency of Mandibular Condylar Process Fractures.

There are significant discrepancies in the reported prevalence of condylar process fractures among all mandibular fractures (16.5-56%) in the available literature. In addition, it seems that the actual number of difficult-to-treat fractures of the mandibular head is unknown. The purpose of this study is to present the current incidence of the different types of mandibular process fractures with a special focus on mandibular head fractures. The medical records of 386 patients with single or multiple mandibular fractures were reviewed. Of the fractures found, 58% were body fractures, 32% were an

Imaging of mandibular fractures: a pictorial review.

Mandibular fractures are among the most common maxillofacial fractures observed in emergency rooms and are mainly caused by road accidents. The clinical features of mandibular fractures include malocclusion and loss of mandibular function. Panoramic radiography is usually limited to isolated lesions, whereas computed tomography is the tool of choice for all other facial traumatic events. No reference standard classification system for the different types of mandibular fractures is defined. Therapeutic options include a conservative approach or surgical treatment based on the anatomic area and

Are open mandibular fractures still an emergency?

INTRODUCTION: Early surgical management is often advocated for fractures of the tooth-bearing portion of the mandible. A 6-hour delay has been mentioned for the fixation of these fractures. Our aim was to bring this paradigm into question. METHODS: All patients referred to our department from September 2012 to May 2014 for fractures of the tooth-bearing portion of the mandible were retrospectively included. For each patient, age, gender, aetiology of the fracture, and characteristics of the fractures were recorded. Tobacco and/or alcohol addictions, diabetes and mandibular dental condition we

Paediatric mandibular fractures: report of a case.

The conservative approach in the treatment of maxillofacial trauma in children has been widely adopted. The type of fracture and its presence within the growing facial skeleton along with the presence of tooth buds may result in different management strategies to that employed in adults. An understanding of conservative treatment options is essential to make informed choices which will best manage these injuries, and an example is presented in this paper. This case report describes a 14-year-old boy who sustained trauma to the chin as a result of a fall, causing a mandibular symphyseal fractur

Pathological mandibular fractures following third molar removal.

Seventeen patients, who presented mandibular fractures following third molar removal, were treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Freiburg between 2000 and 2004. Clinical and radiological data were analysed to evaluate the possible risk of fracture following third molar removal. Our data show an increased rate of pathological mandibular fractures in males over 40 years of age, following removal of a difficult lower wisdom tooth with a high retention grade that necessitated bone removal. Fourteen out of 17 fractures occurred postoperatively. In si
