Alternative Landmarks of the Mandibular Foramen to Prevent Nerve Injury during Ramus Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mandibular foramen (MF) position in relation to other bony landmarks on the mandibular ramus (MR) to better understand the anatomical landmark during the ramus surgery. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Ninety-two adult mandibles were studied by measuring four linear parameters: AB, the distance from the posterior limit of the MF (point A) to the posterior border of the MR (point B), BC, the MR width (Point C was located at the anterior border of the MR), DE, the distance from the lingula tip (the highest and the most anterior limit of the MF) (point D) to the mandibular notc

Mandibular alveolar neurovascular bundle injury associated with impacted third molar surgery.

Inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle (IANB) injury is one of the most common complications of third molar removal and involves important medicolegal issues. An accurate preoperative radiographic assessment of surgical difficulty is necessary to correctly plan the removal of impacted third molars and to estimate the risk of IANB injury. Therefore, the preoperative knowledge of the exact location of the third molar roots in relation to the mandibular canal is mandatory. A direct contact between the tooth and neurovascular bundle is suggested by a radiotransparent band across the roots of the i

Degloving injury of the mandibular mucosa following an extreme sport accident: a case report.

The increasing popularity of high-risk extreme sports such as acrobatic biking, mountain biking, skateboarding, or rollerblading is becoming a notable cause of maxillofacial injuries. Dentists should, therefore, be familiar with the presentation and management of uncommon maxillofacial injuries as a result of these extreme sports. The purpose of this article was to detail a case report of a 7-year-old male with a degloving injury of the mandibular mucosa following an extreme sport accident and to present a description of the patient's multidisciplinary management and follow-up.

[Mandibular fractures due to implant management--incidence, mechanism of injury and therapeutic characteristics].

We report of 5 of 337 patients (1.48%), in whom a fracture of the edentulous atrophied mandible occurred after dental implants had been inserted. In 79 patients a sandwich osteotomy (anterior and/or lateral mandible) had been carried out together with the insertion of implants. The reason for a fracture was infection in 3 patients and weakening of the atrophied mandible by the additional osteotomies in 2 patients. One of the latter two was seen intraoperatively and fixed immediately using miniplates. The other occurred about 4 weeks postoperatively and was not discovered until callus had been

Pneumomediastinum and cervical emphysema subsequent to mandibular injury associated with a flare pistol shot.

Pneumomediastinum in patients with war injuries to the maxillofacial region can be a life-threatening condition. A case is presented of a flare-pistol-shot wound to the mandible which subsequently resulted in cervical emphysema, mediastinal emphysema, and pneumomediastinum, causing a critical condition. Maxillofacial surgeons should be alert to this problem when treating blast or multiple-shell injuries to the maxillofacial region.

Coronectomy of mandibular third molars: A clinical protocol to avoid inferior alveolar nerve injury.

Coronectomy is a surgical procedure for the treatment of mandibular third molars in close proximity to the mandibular canal. Unfortunately, often the surgical protocol is not described step by step and it is difficult for the clinician to assess the key factors that are important for the success of this procedure. The aim of this paper is to propose and describe a standardized surgical protocol to improve the success of the technique. The treatment approach, for the most common types of third molars impaction is analysed. Each step of the surgical procedure is described in details and a new ty

Orthodontic extraction of mandibular third molar to avoid nerve injury and promote periodontal healing.

AIM: Impacted mandibular third molar extraction is a common procedure in oral surgery, not without risk of nerve injury and periodontal defects on the distal aspect of the adjacent second molar. The "orthodontic extraction" is proposed as a method to avoid mandibular nerve injury during the extraction of a deeply embedded third molar and to prevent or limit such periodontal problems. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 28-year-old man presented a deeply impacted left mandibular third molar that required extraction. Radiographs revealed a very slight quantity of bone at the distal surface of the adjacent

An upper cervical spine injury producing paraesthesia in the distribution of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.

A case is reported of a 37-year-old man who developed paraesthesia in the distribution of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve following an injury to the upper cervical spine during a game of rugby. The central pathways of the trigeminal nerve are discussed and it is proposed that mandibular fibres descended beyond their expected level in the spinal trigeminal nucleus, and that it was these fibres which were compressed in the unstable dislocation at the atlanto-axial joint producing the paraesthesia described. Other remote anatomical explanations for the paraesthesia are considered.

Radiographic Predictors of Postoperative Inferior Alveolar Nerve Injury in Mandibular Third Molar Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides additional 3-dimensional information on the relationship between the mandibular third molar (M3M) and the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). As such, CBCT is being increasingly utilized in preoperative M3M assessment. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to compare the radiographic findings on panoramic and CBCT and their association with postoperative IAN paresthesia. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in a sample of patients referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal

Impact of the lower third molar and injury mechanism on the risk of mandibular angle and condylar fractures.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown the influence of the mandibular third molar on mandibular angle and condylar fractures, but have not comparatively analyzed the impact of the injury mechanism on these fractures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the lower third molar (M3) and injury-related factors (fracture etiology and site of impact of the traumatic force) on the risk of mandibular angle and condylar fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 615 patients who sustained a mandibular fracture in a 13-year period (from January 2000 to December 2013). T
