Brown tumours are localized bone lesions, seen in patients with high parathyroid hormone levels. This can be due to primary hyperparathyroidism, which occurs more often in neoplasms of the parathyroid gland or due to secondary hyperparathyroidism more often seen as a result of renal impairment. Facial involvement is rare, with most reports focusing on long and axial bones. However, the mandibular bone is often the only bone affected. Here, we report a rare case of a bi-maxillary attainment of brown tumour in a patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic kidney disease.

Solitary plasmacytoma accounts for a small percentage of plasma cell neoplasms. The disease often affects older people and is potentially curable. Only a few cases of solitary jaw plasmacytoma have been described in the literature. Here we report the case of a 76-year-old woman affected by chronic hepatitis C infection and isolated plasmacytoma of the left jaw. Plasmacytoma was diagnosed in January 2001, but the swelling of the mandible had been present since 1993. Two different pathologists made the diagnosis on the basis of biopsy material from the mandibular swelling.

OBJECTIVE: To increase awareness of temporomandibular joint and mandibular disease in the overall evaluation and diagnosis of the parotid mass.
STUDY DESIGN: We describe clinical presentations of pigmented villonodular synovitis and synovial chondrocalcinosis of the temporomandibular joint, as well as osteoma of the mandible, as they may initially suggest primary neoplasms of the parotid gland.
CONCLUSIONS: Preauricular swelling is a common presenting symptom for patients visiting an otolaryngologist. Often this symptom is suggestive of a parotid mass. However, lesions of the temporomandibul

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Benign fibro-osseous neoplasm. Massive size is rarely reported. May be confused with other pathologies such as fibrous dysplasia or osteosarcoma. Aggressive nature and high recurrence pose management challenges. Treated by surgery.
ABSTRACT: Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm. It can affect both mandible and maxilla. Precise diagnosis can be challenging due to significant overlap of clinicopathological features with other neoplasms. Case reports with massive tumor sizes as presented in our case are uncommon. Huge tumor size can cause alarm for other pat

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare haematological malignancy with an aggressive clinical course. It has been recognised as a distinct entity in the WHO 2008 classification of haematolymphoid neoplasm. This disease usually presents with cutaneous involvement as the first manifestation, with subsequent or simultaneous spread to bone marrow and peripheral blood with leukaemic dissemination. Gingival lesion as the first manifestation, in the absence of a cutaneous lesion, is an uncommon presentation of this rare disease. We report a case of an elderly woman, aged 84 yea

BACKGROUND: Intraosseous myofibroma of the jaw is a rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin with limited comprehensive understanding. It typically affects patients in the first two decades of life with a male predilection.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study presents a rare case of myofibroma mimicking an odontogenic lesion in a 2-year-old boy. The patient presented with an incidental finding of a painless swelling of the right mandibular ramus of unknown etiology. Imaging analysis revealed a solid, expansile lesion adjacent to the germinal zone of the right mandibular first molar. Histopathologic anal

Mandibular osteosarcoma is a rare neoplasm, appearing in young adults as a mass often accompanied by pain, occasionally with paraesthesias, gingival haemorrhages and mobility of teeth, and rarely with ulceration of the skin or mucosa. Roentgenological lytic and/or sclerotic findings are non-specific. Some patients have a previous history of Paget's disease, antecedent radiation treatment, or fibrous dysplasia. Malignant osteoid production can be minimal, resulting in diagnostic difficulties. We report a case of a 33 year-old woman, who, in the absence of a clinical soil associated with the con

Gorlin syndrome or nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal dominant condition mainly characterized by the development of mandibular keratocysts which often have their onset during the second decade of life and/or multiple basal cell carcinoma (BCC) normally arising during the third decade. Cardiac and ovarian fibromas can be found. Patients with NBCCS develop the childhood brain malignancy medulloblastoma (now often called primitive neuro-ectodermal tumor [PNET]) in 5% of cases. The risk of other malignant neoplasms is not clearly increased, although lymphoma and meningiom

Ameloblastomas are benign, locally aggressive, odontogenic epithelial neoplasms. We present a patient with a rare granular cell ameloblastoma. This is a case report and literature review conducted from July 2022 to the present. Our 52-year-old male patient presented to the clinic with a several month history of right lower lateral lip swelling and dental complaints. On imaging and physical exam, we noticed a large heterogenous, multiloculated, expansile lesion of the right mandible with several floating teeth. After incisional biopsy confirmed multicystic granular cell ameloblastoma, the patie

Based on characteristic case-reports the mostly occurring patterns of maxillo-facial pain are discussed. A description is given of pain in case of pulpitis, dento-alveolar abcess, dry socket, deep local periodonitis, temporomandibular joint arthrosis, dehiscence of the mandibular canal, maxillary sinusitis, malignant neoplasm. Trigeminal neuralgia, atypical facial neuralgia and psychogenic pains are discussed. The article concludes with a survey of the most important symptoms of these pain-syndromes in order to facilitate a correct diagnosis.

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of smooth muscle origin that manifests itself uncommonly in the oral cavity because of the paucity of smooth muscle in that location. To the best of our knowledge, only 10 cases of leiomyosarcoma primary to the jawbones have been reported in the English language literature. We report the first pediatric case of leiomyosarcoma arising from the mandible. Facial asymmetry and swelling were accompanied by a rapidly growing exophytic soft tissue mass that caused buccal displacement of the mandibular left permanent first molar. The lesion, observed radiographic

Different neoplasms and infections are known to involve the masticator space, but pathological diagnosis and treatment of these lesions are not always simple due to anatomical complexity. We treated a 66-year-old man with an abscess in the nasopharyngeal masticator space. Physical and CT findings resembled those of neoplastic lesion because the onset dated back 5 years and the patient was lacking in notable signs of infection. Surgery through the maxillary sinus to the lesion enabled us to confirm its pathology and drain pus, with subsequent cure. We noted periodontal infection of the mandibul

The plasma cell neoplasm may present as Extramedullary Plasmacytoma (EMP) in soft tissues in bone as a Solitary Plasmacytoma of bone (SPB) or as a part of multi focal disseminated disease Multiple Myeloma (MM). The majority of 80% occurs in head and neck region. In our case, a 62-year-old male patient presented with a non tender swelling of short duration. The swelling was noted obliterating the vestibular depth in right lower mandibular region. The radiological features were non specific.

Odontomes are considered to be hamartomas rather than a true neoplasm. They are comparatively common odontogenic tumors, and may lead to interference with eruption of associated tooth. Compound odontomes are commonly seen in young adults, but if they occur in children they are usually associated with permanent dentition and prevent eruption of the associated tooth. We hereby report a case of large compound odontome in the mandibular body region of a 65-year-old woman. Because of difficulty in denture fabrication and associated pain on mastication, surgical removal of the lesion was done.

Maxillofacial osteochondromas are considered benign neoplasms, and compared with their extracranial variant are relatively rare. When they involve the mandibular condyle they can induce significant facial deformity, malocclusion and various temporomandibular joint symptoms. Complete excision is considered the standard of care, but can lead to a reduction in the height of the ipsilateral mandible with resultant complications. In such cases, reconstruction is usually warranted and may be approached in various ways. This case report demonstrates a straightforward, accurate and reproducible approa

Pain and dysfunction in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region represent a diagnostic challenge. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are usually diagnosed by means of a thorough patient history and comprehensive clinical examination. However, additional diagnostic tests, such as imaging of the TMJ area, are necessary in cases where the signs do not explain the symptoms. Neoplasms and pseudotumors of the TMJ are quite uncommon, but their early recognition is necessary in order prevent the delay of correct treatment. This report describes 3 cases of different intraosseous lesions of the mandibul

Odontogenic myxoma is a rare, benign mesenchymal odontogenic neoplasm. Microscopically, odontogenic myxoma consists of spindle-shaped or stellate cells within an myxoid stroma. In rare tumors, the stroma contains heavy collagen deposition, and they are then termed odontogenic fibromyxomas. We report an unusual synchronous presentation of an odontogenic fibromyxoma and an osteoma in a 12-year-old boy, which clinically mimicked an ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. The patient presented with a left mandibular mass. Imaging revealed an extensive 51-mm osteolytic lesion accompanied by a hyperdense calci

Parosteal lipoma is a rare benign neoplasm arising in intimate association with the periosteum. Involvement of the mandible is exceptionally rare. We present the case of a 75-year-old man presenting with a 1-year history of a painless, fixed mass on the left chin. Unlike previous reports of mandibular parosteal lipomas which often feature ossification or neurologic symptoms, this patient was asymptomatic, and imaging revealed a non-ossifying, homogeneous fat-density mass. The tumor was completely excised via an extraoral approach. Surgically, the mass was firmly adherent to the periosteum, req

Non-secretory multiple myeloma (NSMM) is a rare cancer of plasma cells characterized by the absence of detectable monoclonal M protein in the blood or urine. A 57-year-old woman presented with mandibular pain but without intraoral swelling. Imaging studies revealed multiple osteolytic lesions in her mandible and pronounced root resorption of the left mandibular second molar. Biopsy results showed atypical plasmacytoid cells positive for anti-kappa, CD138, MUM1, and CD79a antibodies, but negative for anti-lambda and CD20. These results were indicative of a malignant plasma cell neoplasm. No abn

An 8-yr-old female slender-tailed meerkat (Suricata suricatta) presented with a necrotic sublingual mass and osteolysis of the mandible. After 1 mo of palliative care, the meerkat was euthanized. The mass was diagnosed histologically as an anaplastic carcinoma with extensive rostral mandibular destruction. Immunohistochemistry for vimentin and cytokeratin was validated in this nontypical species and showed that neoplastic cells expressed both mesenchymal and epithelial characteristics, suggestive of a primitive and poorly differentiated tumor. A review of 150 adult slender-tailed meerkat histo
