Anthropometric measurement standardization for a multicenter nutrition survey in children with spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disease associated with nutritional status derangement and altered body composition. New drugs are changing the natural history of the disease, so now more than ever is important to focus on the correct assessment of nutritional status in SMA. We implemented a standardization process for the anthropometric measurement as part of our ongoing longitudinal study of growth patterns in SMA patients. It features a procedural manual, included in this communication, observers training and reliability assessment, of which we publish the values obtained i

Radiation Dose Optimisation Through Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Auto-Thorax Collimation.

INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly adopted in digital radiography to enhance workflow efficiency, standardisation and support for radiation dose optimisation. Auto-thorax collimation (ATC) has been introduced to automate field size selection in chest X-ray (CXR) imaging; however, its clinical performance and impact on collimation consistency in routine chest X-ray practice require further evaluation. METHODS: A single-centre retrospective study analysed 400 posteroanterior (PA) erect CXRs sourced from the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and local imag

Profession-based manual therapy nomenclature: exploring history, limitations, and opportunities.

OBJECTIVE: The International Consortium on Manual Therapies (ICMT) is a grassroots interprofessional association open to any formally trained practitioner of manual therapy (MT) and basic scientists promoting research related to the practice of MT. Currently, MT research is impeded by professions' lack of communication with other MT professions, biases, and vernacular. Current ICMT goals are to minimize these barriers, compare MT techniques, and establish an interprofessional MT glossary. METHODS: Practitioners from all professions with training in manual therapies were encouraged by e-mail a

Development of a Long-Term Cross-Sectoral Case and Care Management Manual for Patients With Severe Multiple Sclerosis and Their Caregivers.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Care and case management (CCM) aims to provide optimal care for patients and their caregivers on an individual and superordinate level of health care providers and authorities. To facilitate a clear and systematic CCM process as part of a clinical study intervention, a semistructured manual is the prerequisite. PRIMARY PRACTICE SETTINGS: The ongoing COCOS-MS (Communication, Coordination and Security for People with Multiple Sclerosis) study is a randomized controlled Phase II clinical intervention study. The CCM manual is being tested on the intervention group consisting o

Sign language acquisition by a global aphasic.

A left hemisphere-damaged, hemiplegic, and globally aphasic man was taught receptive and expressive language using Total Communication--a combination of standardized sign language and speech. After an initial period during which words (in sign) were learned slowly and with frequent lapses of memory, the subject's learning ability and memory improved dramatically. He has learned to communicate using increasingly complex, syntactically correct sentences, self-correcting his mistakes. He reads and understands simple sentences. These results suggest that it may be possible to restore communicative

Logographic reading by TMR adults.

Ten moderately retarded adults learned a set of 16 logographic signs. Subjects were asked to demonstrate sentences formed from the signs using dolls and other toys. They were also asked to pick out signs and form a sentence after watching the experimenter demonstrate an event. All subjects were able to demonstrate sentences with only minor errors. Only about half were completely successful in constructing four- and five-word sentences. The method of construction of most subjects revealed a semantic--syntactic disengagement; the signs were chosen in nonsentence order, apparently in order of sal

The visuo-sensorimotor substrate of co-speech gesture processing.

Co-speech gestures are integral to human communication and exhibit diverse forms, each serving a distinct communication function. However, existing literature has focused on individual gesture types, leaving a gap in understanding the comparative neural processing of these diverse forms. To address this, our study investigated the neural processing of two types of iconic gestures: those representing attributes or event knowledge of entity concepts, beat gestures enacting rhythmic manual movements without semantic information, and self-adaptors. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, sys

Progressive addition lenses for deaf lip readers and signers.

Deaf patients depend on intermediate vision for interpersonal communication. Deaf presbyopes are at a particular disadvantage since they are usually corrected for near and far vision with bifocals without consideration of their intermediate vision. Progressive addition lenses were used in this study to provide an intermediate correction for a group of deaf presbyopes. The patients' communication ability was tested through Varilux II lenses and habitual bifocals on a series of standardized lip reading and sign language tests. The patients showed better visual communication skills with the progr

'DSM-V is taking away our identity': the reaction of the online community to the proposed changes in the diagnosis of Asperger's disorder.

This article considers the fate of Asperger's disorder in the light of proposals for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) to collapse Asperger's disorder along with other pervasive developmental disorders into a general spectrum of autism. It is argued that a powerful lay and scientific culture has evolved around the concept of Asperger's disorder, which has found a particularly compelling voice over the last decade in the online Asperger community, with websites such as Wrong Planet recruiting tens of thousands of members. In order to assess the impact of these

A study of 250 patients referred to a department of psychiatry for the deaf.

250 patients referred to a department of psychiatry for the deaf were selected by random sampling and studied. The results underline the need for specialised services for deaf patients of all types, not only those who communicate solely by manual methods. Patients are referred to this department suffering from mental illness and communication disorders, as well as from problems related to their deafness. Some of the difficulties of managing a supra-regional service are discussed.

Harnessing attention-driven hybrid deep learning with combined feature representation for precise sign language recognition to aid deaf and speech-impaired people.

Speech is the primary form of communication; still, there are people whose hearing or speaking skills are disabled. Communication offers an essential hurdle for people with such an impairment. Sign Languages (SLs) are the natural languages of the Deaf and their primary means of communication. As visual languages, they use numerous corresponding channels to transfer information. This includes manual features, such as hand pose, shape, and movement, as well as non-manual features, including mouth movements, head, shoulder, torso, and facial expressions. SL recognition (SLR) consists of the compl

Social communication deficits: Specific associations with Social Anxiety Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social communication deficits are prevalent amongst children with anxiety disorders; however whether they are over-represented specifically among children with Social Anxiety Disorder has not been examined. This study set out to examine social communication deficits among children with Social Anxiety Disorder in comparison to children with other forms of anxiety disorder. METHODS: Parents of 404 children with a diagnosed anxiety disorder completed the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ; Rutter, M., Bailey, A., Lord, C., 2003. Teaching multi-step requesting and social communication to two children with autism spectrum disorders with three AAC options.

The present study involved comparing the acquisition of multi-step requesting and social communication across three AAC options: manual signing (MS), picture exchange (PE), and speech-generating devices (SGDs). Preference for each option was also assessed. The participants were two children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who had previously been taught to use each option to request preferred items. Intervention was implemented in an alternating-treatments design. During baseline, participants demonstrated low levels of correct communicative responding. With intervention, both participants

Dupuytren's disease: relation to work and injury.

The present status of adjudication for workers claiming compensation for Dupuytren's disease is inconsistent and, therefore, unfair to both workers and employers. In some Eastern European countries Dupuytren's disease is classified as an industrial disease, whereas in other countries it is considered to have no relation to manual work or hand injury. In jurisdictions that sometimes award compensation, the reasons for acceptance or rejection of a claim vary from case to case and are not necessarily based on our present knowledge of the disease. The purpose of this communication is to highlight

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease: A Caregiver Assessment of Disease Impact.

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease is a rare X-linked leukodystrophy accompanied by central nervous system hypomyelination with a spectrum of clinical phenotypes. This is the first survey of caregivers of individuals with Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease to investigate the presenting symptoms, path to diagnosis, identity and impact of most bothersome symptoms, and needs that future treatment should address. One hundred participants completed the survey. Results from this survey demonstrate that the majority of Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease symptoms manifest before 2 years of age and commonly include defi

Feasibility of Natural Language Processing-Assisted Auditing of Critical Findings in Chest Radiology.

OBJECTIVE: Time-sensitive communication of critical imaging findings like pneumothorax or pulmonary embolism to referring physicians is essential for patient safety. The definitive communication is the radiology free-text report. Quality assurance initiatives require that institutions audit these communications, a time-intensive manual task. We propose using a rule-based natural language processing system to improve the process for auditing critical findings communications. METHODS: We present a pilot assessment of the feasibility of using an automated critical finding identification system t

Best Practices for Adapting and Delivering Community-Based Yoga for People with Traumatic Brain Injury in the United States and Canada.

Emerging benefits of yoga for traumatic brain injury (TBI) suggest that broader accessibility to community-based yoga programming is important. This cross-sectional, mixed methods study sought to identify best practices for adapting and delivering community-based yoga to people with TBI. An online survey was sent to 175 yoga teachers trained to teach LoveYourBrain Yoga, a community-based, 6-week, manualized program for people with TBI and their care-givers. The survey instrument included open- and closed-text questions assessing teachers' perspectives on the most and least helpful adaptions fo

Relationship between wheelchair skills scores and peak aerobic exercise capacity of manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury: a cross-sectional study.

Purpose: Although both wheelchair skills and fitness are important and probably inter-related, the extent and nature of the relationship between them are not well understood. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that there are significant relationships between wheelchair skills scores and the peak exercise capacity of community-dwelling manual wheelchair users with spinal cord injury.Materials and methods: We studied 26 participants, recording Wheelchair Skills Test Questionnaire scores and peak power output from graded aerobic wheelchair exercise testing on a motorized tread

Shape-Constrained Sparse and Low-Rank Decomposition for Auroral Substorm Detection.

An auroral substorm is an important geophysical phenomenon that reflects the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetosphere. Detecting substorms is of practical significance in order to prevent disruption to communication and global positioning systems. However, existing detection methods can be inaccurate or require time-consuming manual analysis and are therefore impractical for large-scale data sets. In this paper, we propose an automatic auroral substorm detection method based on a shape-constrained sparse and low-rank decomposition (SCSLD) framework. Our method automatic

[Deaf people and sign language: an enigma in dentistry].

Sign language is the main means of communication for deaf people; consists of the combination of manual, body and facial movements with specific meanings. Among the main barriers faced by this community are the lack of communication, shortage of health services, added to the inexperience and lack of knowledge of sign language by the health professional. This article aims to raise awareness of the importance and need of sign language in dental clinical care and professional training, as well as strategies, tools and recommendations for better care for deaf people.
