Acinetobacter baumannii in manure and anaerobic digestates of German biogas plants.

Studies considering environmental multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter spp. are scarce. The application of manure on agricultural fields is one source of multidrug-resistant bacteria from livestock into the environment. Here, Acinetobacter spp. were quantified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction in manure applied to biogas plants and in the output of the anaerobic digestion, and Acinetobacter spp. isolated from those samples were comprehensively characterized. The concentration of Acinetobacter 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene copies per g fresh weight was in range of 106-108 in m

Effect of pyrolysis temperature on the composition of DOM in manure-derived biochar.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the migration and transformation of nutrients and pollutants. Recently, DOM derived from biochar has the potential to determine the application of biochar and has attracted much researcher's attention. However, the effects of pyrolysis temperature on the composition evolution of DOM in manure-derived biochar are still unclear. In this study, DOM solutions extracted from a series of biochars derived from three kinds of manure (chicken, swine and dairy) at six pyrolysis temperature (200-700 °C) were analyzed using UV-Visible, Fourier tran

Abiotic transformation products of tetracycline and chlortetracycline in salt solutions and manure.

Tetracyclines belong to the group of the most applied antibiotics in veterinary medicine worldwide. Due to their incomplete absorption and/or metabolism in the animal gut, tetracyclines are frequently detected in manure samples. Within the matrix, an elimination of these compounds has been reported in several studies. However, only little information about potential transformation products of tetracyclines in manure and the environment is available. Therefore, the fate of tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) was investigated in aqueous solutions and manure. Abiotic incubation of TC in

Detection of Clostridium botulinum in liquid manure and biogas plant wastes.

Biogas plants have been considered as a source for possible amplification and distribution of pathogenic bacteria capable of causing severe infections in humans and animals. Manure and biogas wastes could be sources for spore-forming bacteria such as Clostridium botulinum. In the present study, 24 liquid manure and 84 biogas waste samples from dairies where the majority of the cows suffered from chronic botulism were investigated for the presence of botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) and C. botulinum spores. The prevalence of BoNT/A, B, C, D, and E in biogas wastes was 16.6, 8.3, 10.7, 7.1, and 10.8

Effects of winter manure application in Ohio on the quality of surface runoff.

Winter application of manure poses environmental risks. Seven continuous corn, instrumented watersheds (approximately 1 ha each) at the USDA-ARS North Appalachian Experimental Watershed research station near Coshocton, Ohio were used to evaluate the environmental impacts of winter manure application when using some of the Ohio Natural Resources Conservation Service recommendations. For 3 yr on frozen, sometimes snow-covered, ground in January or February, two watersheds received turkey litter, two received liquid swine manure, and three were control plots that received N fertilizer at planting

The behavior of tetracyclines and their degradation products during swine manure composting.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the behavior of three tetracyclines including chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and tetracycline (TC) and their degradation products in a pilot scale swine manure composting, and also to study the degradation kinetics of CTC, OTC and TC. During the pilot scale composting, CTC, OTC and TC were degraded by 74%, 92% and 70%, respectively. Several degradation products were found like 4-epitetracycline (ETC), 4-epioxytetracycline (EOTC), 4-epichlortetracycline (ECTC), demeclocycline (DMCTC) and anhydrotetracycline (ATC). Both the simple an

Dose effects of Mg and PO4 sources on the composting of swine manure.

A series of experiments were performed to study the effects of magnesium (Mg) and phosphate (PO(4)) addition on the decomposition of organic matter and struvite formation during the composting of swine manure. In these experiments, different amounts of magnesium chloride (MgCl(2)) with or without PO(4) salts were added to the samples, and the optimum molar ratio of Mg and PO(4) to the total nitrogen (TN) in swine manure was studied. The temperature profiles revealed that no organic matter was decomposed when 0.1M or more Mg and PO(4) salts were added and that when 0.05 M ratio of Mg and PO(4)

Laboratory study of oxytetracycline degradation kinetics in animal manure and soil.

Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a major member of tetracyclines, which are widely administered to animals in confined feeding operations. To diminish the contamination of OTC in the environment, which results from the application of OTC-containing manure as fertilizer in agricultural lands, OTC degradation kinetics in manure and soil under laboratory aerobic conditions was investigated. OTC degradation kinetics was found to be described well by the previously developed availability-adjusted first-order model at all moistures and low temperatures (<or=25 degrees C). OTC degradation increased with incr

Dairy manure treatment, digestion and nutrient recovery as a phosphate fertilizer.

A combined approach of biological treatment, solids digestion and nutrient recovery was tested on dairy manure. A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated in three modes, in order to optimize nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) removals. The highest average removal efficiencies of 91% for NH4-N, 59% for PO4-P and 80% for total chemical oxygen demand (COD) were achieved. Staining experiments suggested the coexistence of glycogen and phosphorus accumulating organisms. Anaerobic digestion of wasted bio-solids was able to produce a PO4-P concentration of 70 mgL-1 in the supernatant. A pilot-scal

Characterization of phosphorus species in biosolids and manures using XANES spectroscopy.

Identification of the chemical P species in biosolids or manures will improve our understanding of the long-term potential for P loss when these materials are land applied. The objectives of this study were to determine the P species in dairy manures, poultry litters, and biosolids using X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and to determine if chemical fractionation techniques can provide useful information when interpreted based on the results of more definitive P speciation studies. Our XANES fitting results indicated that the predominant forms of P in organic P sources

Sheep and rapeseed cake manure promote antibiotic resistome in agricultural soil.

The application of manure in agriculture caused the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in soil environments. However, the co-occurrence pattern and host diversity of ARGs and MGEs in soils amended with animal and green manures remains unclear. In this study, metagenomic assembly and binning techniques were employed to comprehensively explore the effects of sheep manure and green manure on soil microbiome, antibiotic resistomes, and ARG hosts. Both rapeseed cake manure and sheep manure increased the abundance and diversity of ARGs,

Migration characteristics of ARGs from pig manure in compost - soil - lettuce.

This study aims to reveal the contamination patterns, persistence characteristics, and fate dynamics of ARGs during aerobic composting of swine manure with different carbon-nitrogen ratios (C/N = 15:1, 25:1, 35:1) and their subsequent dissemination in soil-plant systems following fertilization. The absolute abundances of 101 ARGs of six categories ranged from 105 to 1014 copies/g during the composting process. The tetracyclines, macrolides and β-lactams ARGs were effectively reduced by the maturation phase. Among them, the β-lactam ARGs had the highest abatement efficiency (73-89 %). Quinolone

Pathogenic bacteria in biogas plants using cattle, swine, and poultry manure.

Fugate, a waste product from biogas production, regularly used in agriculture as a fertiliser, may contain bacterial pathogens that cause zoonoses. Anaerobic digestion (AD) can inactivate viable pathogens, including parasites, viruses, and pathogens containing antibiotic resistance genes. This study aimed to compare the numbers of pathogenic bacteria and diversity of potential bacterial pathogens in the fugate using three different types of slurry: cattle, swine, and poultry manure. The swine fugate showed higher numbers of Clostridium perfringens and Campylobacter sp. than the poultry and cat

Anaerobic co-digestion of cyanide containing cassava pulp with pig manure.

Anaerobic co-digestion of cyanide-containing cassava pulp with pig manure was evaluated using laboratory scale mesophilic digester. The digester was operated in a semi-continuous mode with the mixed feedstock having C/N ratio of 35:1. Digester startup was accomplished in 60days with loading of 0.5-1kgVS/m(3)d. Subsequently, the loading to digester was increased step-wise from 2 to 9kgVS/m(3)d. Digester performance was stable at loading between 2 and 6kgVS/m(3)d with an average volatile solid removal and methane yield of 82% and 0.38m(3)/kgVSadded, respectively. However, beyond loading of 7kgVS

Bloom of resident antibiotic-resistant bacteria in soil following manure fertilization.

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global threat to public health. Agricultural use of antibiotics is believed to contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance, but the mechanisms by which many agricultural practices influence resistance remain obscure. Although manure from dairy farms is a common soil amendment in crop production, its impact on the soil microbiome and resistome is not known. To gain insight into this impact, we cultured bacteria from soil before and at 10 time points after application of manure from cows that had not received antibiotic treatm

Leaching of cyanogenic glucosides and cyanide from white clover green manure.

Use of crops for green manure as a substitute for chemical fertilizers and pesticides is an important approach towards more sustainable agricultural practices. Green manure from white clover is rich in nitrogen but white clover also produces the cyanogenic glucosides (CGs) linamarin and lotaustralin; CGs release toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) upon hydrolysis which may be utilized for pest control. We demonstrate that applying CGs in the form of a liquid extract of white clover to large columns of intact agricultural soils can result in leaching of toxic cyanide species to a depth of at least 1m.

Tile water quality following liquid swine manure application into standing corn.

The quality of water draining fields fertilized with liquid swine (Sus scrofa) manure (LSM) sidedressed into standing corn (Zea mays L.) at rates ranging from 0 to 94 m(3) ha(-1), either topdressed (TD) onto the surface, or injected (INJ) into the soil once annually for each of three consecutive years was evaluated. Liquid swine manure application rate was a critical driver of preferential flow of LSM to tile as detected by turbidity, concentrations of NH(4)(+)-N, dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), and the presence of enteric bacteria (Escherichia coli). Contaminant movement to drains occurr

Potential nitrification in alum-treated soil slurries amended with poultry manure.

Alum is used to reduce environmental pollutants in poultry production. Alum decreases NH3 volatilization and increases total N and NH4+-N compared to untreated poultry manure. Nitrification in poultry wastes could therefore be stimulated due to higher NH4+ concentrations or could be inhibited because the soil environment is acidified. A 10-day laboratory study was conducted to study potential nitrification rates in soil slurries (20 g soil in 150 ml water) amended with 2.0 g alum-treated poultry manure. Fecal bacteria, NH4+, NO2-, NO3-, orthophosphate, pH, and NH3 were measured at 2-day interv

Rainfall and Substrate Origin Driven Change of Ruminant Manure Microbiomes in Cyprus.

Microbial communities drive the stabilisation of organic matter during manure storage; however, the combined influence of substrate origin and sudden rainfall occurrences on these communities remains poorly understood. For the first time in Cyprus, we investigated the effects of manure type (dairy cow vs. goat) and a drying-rainfall simulation pulse on the community composition, diversity, and functional potential during manure storage, using 16S rRNA metabarcoding and shotgun sequencing. Under dry conditions, substrate composition set the baseline, with the more structurally heterogeneous goa

Manure to insect farming for feed mitigates nitrogen and greenhouse gas emissions.

Livestock manure is nutrient-rich and represents a promising feedstock for insect farming, with insect protein offering a high-quality alternative to conventional crop-based livestock feed. This pathway has substantial potential to mitigate nitrogen (N) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from livestock systems. Here, we integrate global livestock models with trade, land-use, and cost-benefit analysis to quantify the environmental and economic implications of manure-to-insect conversion while ensuring the recycling of manure to croplands to maintain soil fertility across 166 countries. We show
