We trace the early historical references concerning "gangrene," specifically in the treatises of the Hippocratic corpus. The term "gangrene" today refers to the necrosis, or death, of tissues resulting from prolonged ischemia, bacterial invasion, and subsequent putrefaction. Apart from the name "gangrene," another term, "sphacelus," exists in the corpus, referring to similar decay. An effort is made to correlate cases of "gangrene" and "sphacelus" described in the Hippocratic texts and related bibliography. In this study we retained only references to "sphacelus" that have the same end points

James Ramsay Hunt (1874-1937) was one of the pioneers of early-twentieth-century American neurology. The James Ramsay Hunt Case Books, Columbia University, were created by Hunt and chronicle his experience with private patients from 1903 until 1937. This resource is not widely known to scholars and the content of these 30 volumes has not been described in detail. The purpose of this report is to describe this resource in terms of its organization, general contents and special features. The books contain the clinical records of 5,019 consecutive patients. The largest proportion had neurasthenia

This study examines depictions of the relationship between women and melancholia in German psychiatric textbooks published between 1803 and 1913. Focusing in particular on how these texts present the female life cycle, nineteenth-century views about female 'nature' and gender traits, and women's familial and professional roles, it reveals how nineteenth-century psychiatrists were caught between the scientific demand for objective clinical observation and the gender norms of the culture to which they belonged. On the one hand, psychiatrists carefully and sensitively describe female melancholia

The impact of cholera epidemics on communities around the world during the 19th century has generated a vast array of resources for the medical historian. However, the more readily available testimonies of doctors and local boards of health dominate the literature, whilst our understanding of the experience of individuals, particularly the destitute victims of cholera and their families, is sparse. This article analyses a collection of unpublished documents assembled by an antiquary, John Bell, from Gateshead, North-East England, in 1831-1832, in order to reconstruct the experience of the local

A medical compendium of "Melleus liquorphysicae artis" has survived under the name Alexander Hispanus; it is in codex Ms. 8769 of the Biblioteca nacional in Madrid. Therein a herbal from the 14th century is integrated. However, today people must think that we have one herbal and two authors: Alexander Hispanus and Henrik Harpestraeng (died 1244), a physician from Scandinavia. First of all, the parts of the medical compendium are presented. We do not know which parts originally belong to the medical compendium. The examination of many handwritings suggested that the discourses about consumption

A newly discovered handwritten manuscript of Charles T. Jackson, MD, contains instructions for the preparation and administration of sulfuric ether, information on Jackson's preferred mixture of ether and chloroform, an account of his experiments with other potential anesthetic agents, and his comments on etherizing cattle and other animals. Jackson's nine-page manuscript is believed to have been written in the autumn of 1851, around the time that he submitted his memorial on the discovery of etherization to Baron von Humboldt, and made a separate submission to the US Congress.

Esmail Jorjani was an influential Persian physician and anatomist of the 12th century who did most of his writing after his seventh decade of life. Jorjani's comprehensive textbook of medicine, Zakhirey-e Khwarazmshahi (The Treasure of the Khwarazm Shah) was written in approximately AD 1112 and is considered to be the oldest medical encyclopedia written in Persian. This was an essential textbook for those studying medicine during this time. We describe the life and times of Jorjani and provide a translation and interpretations of his detailed descriptions of the cranial nerves, which were writ

The objective of this article is to analyze the mode of transmission of medical scientific knowledge in the Middle Ages. It is based on two unpublished manuscripts, a Tacuinum sanitatis and a Treatise on the Gout, which are start from different assumptions and motivations, but which share the will to disseminate certain useful knowledge to cure the disease. The first manuscript exhibits little rigour and seems to have been written in order to prove the supremacy of empirical science over theoretical science. The second one is methodologically more rigorous and integrative, since it tries to ma

Quite by chance, when reading an old manuscript dealing with fistulae of the parotid duct, the author came across a clear description of what is now well known as gustatory sweating (Frey's syndrome). The incident which gave rise to this observation is recalled and the account is reproduced in the original text.

The pediatrician and scientist, Clemens Freiherr von Pirquet (1874-1929) was the first to coin the term "allergy". His experiments with Behring's serum, which he administered to sick children, led him to an awareness of an interaction between the human organism and pathogens. In his article published in the Müncher Medizinischen Wochenschrift in 1906, he laid the foundation stone for modern allergology.

A previously unstudied trilingual medieval medical manuscript, ca. 1400, RARES 091 M31, has been in the State Library Victoria, Melbourne, since 1862. The texts in this codex reveal the pedagogical and personal interests of a compiler from the world of Oxford colleges, halls, and libraries in the late fourteenth century. It contains academic medical texts as well as writings of a personal nature-charms, verses, prayers-in Latin, French, and Middle English. It appears to have been associated with Henry Beaumond (d. 1415), whose name appears in the codex. Beaumond was a physician with a problema

Historiarum libri decem, a work written by St. Gregory, the bishop of Tours, is an important contemporary source for the study of the Merovingian times. In Book V 42 Gregory reports the story of Maurilio, the bishop of Cahors in the Southern Gaul, who was strongly suffering from gout. Maurilio treated the illness himself applying a hot iron to his foot and shank. This therapy is already mentioned in the Corpus Hippocraticum. It seems, however, that cauterization was not known to St. Gregory of Tours as a medical treatment of this particular illness. He simply saw in it a sanctifying practice i

The authors studied the publications written by the staff of the University Department of Urology in Budapest, Hungary between 1946 and 1956. The collection was contributed on the occasion of Professor Babics's 10-year-long chairmanship. Over a period of 10 years, 214 papers were published by 15 urologists, including 3 books and 3 PhD theses; 16 papers were published in German, 22 in English, 2 in French, and 1 in Italian. The most frequent topic of the papers (26) was basic science (e.g., ureter motility, lymph circulation, intrarenal pressure condition). Other papers dealt with nephrology, a

With this document we provide an initial study of the introduction of vaccination against smallpox in Spain. Despite the great number of studies on the topic, there is need for complementary research to examine in detail how, when, and with what means vaccination was introduced in and spread throughout the country. Doctor Ignacio María Ruiz Luzuriaga (1763-1822), a leading character in this process, was an ardent proponent of vaccination, and vaccinator to the court. Although he published nothing on the topic, he left behind several manuscripts, including reports and letters, that are held at

In 1529, Sudor anglicus, the 'English Sweating Sickness', spread from England to Germany reaching the city of Augsburg. Its exact nature is unclear: the symptoms were profuse sweating, uncontrollable thirst, and headaches, with death occurring within hours of infection. Those who survived the first twenty-four hours returned to health. According to one source the fever arrived in Autumn 1529 and in September there were 800 deaths; another source gives November as the onset with 600 deaths. While these death rates were in fact relatively low compared with the plague, for instance, people were p

Compassion is considered an important quality for a successful physician today, but did ancient physicians display and value this emotion? How did they feel when faced with the pain and suffering of their patients? How did their patients' emotions affect their own? Many ancient physicians are not well-known for expressions of compassion in their writings; however, this seems to change in the second century AD. One medical writer who exemplifies this change is Soranus of Ephesus (c. 98-138 AD). In his Gynecology, there are a number of passages where compassion is addressed or expressed (such as
