How to carry out a health-orientated marathon training programme for running and inline skating.

BACKGROUND: More and more people want to do something for their health. Nevertheless, certain reluctance exists when it comes to committing oneself to higher sporting aims, as well as some uncertainty concerning proper training. DESIGN AND METHODS: Two model projects have been developed, aimed at motivating larger parts of the population towards a health-orientated training programme. Both projects serve as a basis for further, similarly designed large-scale projects. In the running project a health-focused run training programme was set up aimed at preparing people, previously inexperienced

Marathon Running Transiently Causes Medial Meniscus Extrusion: Recovery Time Course and Factors Associated With Extrusion.

Meniscal recovery time following marathon running remains unknown, despite the need for practical recommendations on post-race return to training. We aimed (1) to characterize the time course of medial meniscus extrusion (MME) after a full marathon and (2) to identify baseline factors associated with the magnitude of the acute increase in MME. One hundred recreational runners (200 knees; mean age 47.2 years; 77 men, 23 women) from five marathons underwent weight-bearing, fully extended-knee portable ultrasonography at baseline and immediately post-race, and 90 runners (180 knees) were reassess

Variation of bone-related and inflammatory biomarkers after a half-marathon running in trained subjects.

BACKGROUND: Marathons and ultra-marathon generally evidence an anabolic effect on bone metabolism; however, there is scarce knowledge of less demanding events as half-marathons, which, instead, is becoming one of the most popular recreational activities, rising in the number of followers all over the world. AIM: To evaluate the trend of bone turnover biomarkers (bone-specific alkaline phosphatase BALP, osteocalcin OC, type 1 procollagen amino-terminal peptide P1NP, bone formation biomarkers; and carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks CTx, and bone reabsorption biomarker) and vitamin D (25(OH)D)

Effects of compression pants on hip proprioception and dynamic balance during intermittent half-marathon running.

The study aims to examine how the compression pants affect hip proprioception and dynamic balance at three consecutive 7 km intervals in half marathon runners. Eighteen runners completed an intermittent treadmill half-marathon (3 × 7 km segments with standardized 5-min breaks) wearing either full-length compression pants or normal shorts. Hip extension proprioception, dynamic balance, RPE, heart rate and blood lactate were assessed before running and after each 7 km portion. There were no differences between the compression pants and normal shorts in terms of RPE, heart rate and blood lactate.

Effects of running a marathon on sclerostin and parathyroid hormone concentration in males aged over 50.

The aim of our study was to verify whether running a marathon (32nd Wroclaw Marathon) was associated with changes in sclerostin and intact PTH (iPTH) concentration in middle-aged males. We enrolled 33 males who completed the marathon race. Blood samples were taken 60 minutes before (V1), immediately after (V2), and 7 days after the run (V3). The mean serum sclerostin concentration was 42.4 ± 10.8 pmol/L at V1, increased to 62.9 ± 12.6 pmol/L at V2 (t= -11.206; p < 0.001) and returned to baseline in V3 (t = 8.344; p < 0.001, V3 vs. V2). A similar trend was recorded for iPTH (t= -7.440; p < 0.00

Does Running Increase the Risk of Hip and Knee Arthritis? A Survey of 3804 Marathon Runners.

BACKGROUND: Long-distance running is a popular form of cardiovascular exercise with many well-described health benefits, from improving heart health to the management of obesity, diabetes, and mental illness. The impact of long-distance running on joint health in recreational runners, however, remains inconclusive. HYPOTHESIS: The prevalence of osteoarthritis in runners is not associated with an athlete's running-related history, including the number of marathons completed, cumulative years of running, average weekly mileage, and average running pace. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.

Impact of marathon running on morphological variations in the knee joint based on statistical shape modelling.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the morphological variations influenced by marathon running by establishing a statistical shape model (SSM) of the knee joint for non-marathon-running Chinese women and comparing it with Chinese female marathon runners. APPROACH: Magnetic resonance images of the knee joints of 8 Chinese female marathon runners and 48 female non-marathon controls were collected. A SSM of knee joint geometry was developed for the control group and assessed. Each model was individually fitted to extract the principal component weights, which were analysed using independent samp

Effects of long-endurance running on immune system parameters and lymphocyte function in experienced marathoners.

The extent and duration of changes in leukocyte subsets, lymphocyte subpopulations, spontaneous blastogenesis, cortisol, and catecholamines were measured in ten experienced marathoners, who ran 3 h to exhaustion in a laboratory setting. Blood samples were taken at baseline, 1 h of exercise, and 5 min, 1.5 h, 6 h, and 21 h of recovery. The 3-h endurance run was associated with significant leukocytosis, granulocytosis, neutrophilia, monocytosis, and eosinopenia during recovery. All of these parameters except for eosinophils returned to normal by 21 h of recovery. Total lymphocyte count increased

Coil embolization of distal vascular lesion using a 1.5 Fr Marathon microcatheter and 'free-running' technique.

In distal vascular lesions, such as the distal anterior inferior cerebellar artery or posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) dissecting aneurysm, and dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF) and arteriovenous malformation (AVM), super-selective catheterization and embolization using liquid agents, such as NBCA or Onyx liquid embolic system, is the preferred treatment.1 2 We used a flow-directed 1.5 Fr Marathon microcatheter (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) for embolization because commonly used detachable coil-compatible microcatheters can be too short or rigid for superselection.3-6 We design

Lesions in the legs do not preclude ultra-marathon running for 100 days without pain: case report.

There is an increasing interest in participation in ultra-endurance events and a concomitant need to understand their effects on health. The effects of extremely prolonged running on leg joints, ligaments, tendons and menisci have not been explored sufficiently. The aim of the present single case study was to use ultrasonography to estimate the effects of a self-paced 8-10 hours daily running for 100 days on the morphology of joints in an experienced 47-year-old ultra-marathon runner. Examination before the start of the 100 days of running revealed already multiple but mostly mild, painless le
