Boxing and mixed martial arts: preliminary traumatic neuromechanical injury risk analyses from laboratory impact dosage data.

OBJECT: In spite of ample literature pointing to rotational and combined impact dosage being key contributors to head and neck injury, boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) padding is still designed to primarily reduce cranium linear acceleration. The objects of this study were to quantify preliminary linear and rotational head impact dosage for selected boxing and MMA padding in response to hook punches; compute theoretical skull, brain, and neck injury risk metrics; and statistically compare the protective effect of various glove and head padding conditions. METHODS: An instrumented Hybrid II

Becoming a fighter: phenomenological dimensions of personal development in beginner martial arts and combat sports practitioners.

INTRODUCTION: Martial arts and combat sports (MA&CS) place practitioners in bodily and relational situations close to violence while being organized through the reciprocal structure of corporal fight. Understanding personal development in these practices requires attention to how practitioners experience, sustain, and respond to combative engagement. Disruptive situations are moments in which this structure is strained, exposing the limits of practitioners' resources without necessarily producing development. The aim of this study is to identify and comprehend how adult beginner MA&CS practiti

Martial arts practice and self-identity development among college students: evidence from an embodied psychological perspective.

BACKGROUND: Emerging adulthood (18-25 years) is a critical developmental period characterized by identity exploration and psychological vulnerability. College students frequently experience stress, identity confusion, and mental health challenges. Martial arts training has been associated with psychological benefits; however, its role in identity development and the mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. Grounded in an embodied psychological framework, this study examined whether an 8-week structured martial arts intervention enhances self-identity development among college st

The vascular neck restraint of mixed martial arts: understanding the pathophysiology, hemodynamics, and long-term consequences.

OBJECTIVES: B Mixed martial arts (MMA) brings various forms of martial arts disciplines together as a unified sport. Sportive 'choking,' also known as vascular neck compression, vascular neck restraint (VNR), or carotid restraints are utilized in MMA to apply jugular and carotid compression and subdue one's opponent. Few studies have explored the long-term consequences of VNRs, as well as the underlying pathophysiology and hemodynamics of the restraint. A narrative review was conducted in order to explore the long-term consequences of VNRs, as well as the underlying pathophysiology and hemodyn

Examining the occurrence and outcomes of concussion and mTBI in mixed martial arts athletes: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a sport growing in popularity around the world. However, many individuals participate in the sport with little understanding of the potential short- and long-term consequences of injuries sustained while participating. Specifically, individuals are placed at a high risk of minor traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and concussive episodes as a result of head injuries incurred during training and competition. AIMS: The current review aimed to examine the literature surrounding the occurrence and outcomes of mTBI in MMA athletes to gain a better understanding

Degenerative changes of the wrist in mixed martial arts and boxing based on the three column theory.

OBJECTIVE: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a relatively young combat sport. In contrast to classic boxing, MMA combines techniques of grappling and striking. However, characteristic long-term effects of MMA on the wrist are discussed controversially. Aim of this study was to elucidate characteristic degenerative changes of the wrist from MMA fighters in comparison to classic boxers. METHODS: In this study, eleven professional MMA fighters and ten professional boxers with chronic wrist pain were examined and compared. Age, weight, number of fights and weekly hours of training were recorded. Wrist

Quantification of training load distribution in mixed martial arts athletes: A lack of periodisation and load management.

The aim of this study was to quantify typical training load and periodisation practices of MMA athletes. MMA competitors (n = 14; age = 22.4 ± 4.4 years; body mass = 71.3 ± 7.7 kg; stature = 171 ±9.9 cm) were observed during training for 8 consecutive weeks without intervention. Seven athletes were training for competitive bouts whilst the remaining 7 were not. Daily training duration, intensity (RPE), load (sRPE and segRPE), fatigue (short questionnaire of fatigue) and body region soreness (CR10 scale) were recorded. Using Bayesian analyses (BF10≥3), data demonstrate that training duration (w

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Mixed Martial Arts Injuries Presenting to United States Emergency Departments, 2008-2015.

Limited research has systematically examined injuries resulting from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, and mixed martial arts (MMA), especially when compared to more well-known or -established martial arts. These three combative sports differ substantially regarding their rules and techniques. BJJ emphasizes ground positioning and submission, Judo rewards throwing an opponent on their back with submission ending the match, and MMA emphasizes knocking out or forcing the submission of one's opponent. We examined injuries, among people of any age, experienced from participation in BJJ, Judo, and M

Biochemical and psychological markers of fatigue and recovery in mixed martial arts athletes during strength and conditioning training.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) training imposes significant physiological and psychological demands, increasing the risk of overtraining. This study aimed to assess temporal changes in biochemical and psychological fatigue and recovery markers during a structured 3-week strength and conditioning training program in professional MMA athletes. Ten male MMA athletes (26.2 ± 0.9 years; 7.0 ± 2.0 years of training experience) participated. Blood samples and psychological assessments (Profile of Mood States - POMS) were collected at four time points: pre-training (T-0), and after each training week (T-1,

[Blunt force injuries due to martial arts in children--a diagnostic problem? Delayed diagnosis of an infected hematoma].

INTRODUCTION: Blunt force injuries in martial arts occur frequently but isolated hematoma of muscles in the extremities is rare. Even minor trauma of the lower extremities due to throwing techniques in judo and other forms of Asian martial arts can lead to major pathologies. METHODS: A 9-year-old girl presented with an unclear swelling and soreness of the calf muscle. The patient could not remember an obvious traumatic event. She was admitted 4 days later because of increased swelling, pain and erythema. The parents reported a minor trauma at judo training 1 week ago. Further investigation wa
