OBJECTIVE: To describe an unusual case of bilateral masseter and pterygoid muscle hypertrophy.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 23-year-old male patient presented with a bilateral, painless swelling of 1 year duration at the parotid areas without improvement after using antibiotics/systemic corticosteroids/non steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. His medical history was not significant. The initial differential diagnosis included salivary gland/jaw bone/masseter pathology, but the MRI revealed only an increase in the size of the masseter and pterygoid muscles. The patient was informed

This report describes a case of masseter muscle rigidity encountered at the start of an elective gynaecological procedure. At preoperative assessment, the patient, a 41-year old woman with a previous non-eventful surgical and anesthetic history was given a Mallampati score of 3. Following suxamethonium administration, full mouth opening proved difficult. Laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation were not possible leading to the eventual use of a laryngeal mask airway and resulting in a successful anaesthetic outcome. A number of possibilities that may account for this situation as well as viable op

Masseter hypertrophy is a characteristic condition resulting from an increase in the size of the muscle mass. At times, it produces significant facial asymmetry and is an important finding in the differential diagnosis of similar located entities. A proper diagnosis of this condition would avoid more aggressive and unwarranted therapy by an inexperienced clinician who may mistake it for a more serious pathologic condition. This article reports two cases of bilateral masseter hypertrophy having characteristic diagnostic features, along with specialized imaging modalities and review of literatur

UNLABELLED: Many plastic surgeons use mandibular osteotomy (reduction gonioplasty) without masseter resection to correct a square face. However, there is not enough long-term observation of the masseter after reduction gonioplasty, although some researches have already confirmed that the volume of masseter muscle does decrease shortly after reduction gonioplasty.
METHODS: The Plastic Surgery Hospital database was retrospectively reviewed for patients who underwent reduction gonioplasty. Fifty-six patients with both preoperative and 4 years postoperative 3-dimensional computed tomography (3DCT

We sought to determine the incidence of malignant hyperthermia (MH) susceptibility in adult patients with a previous episode of masseter muscle rigidity (MMR). The medical records and in vitro contracture test results of all patients over 15 years of age tested for MH because of previous MMR from 1985 to 1988 were reviewed. The number of children (age less than 16 yr) tested for MH because of previous MMR was also determined for the same four-year period, for comparison of coincidence rates. Six of 24 adult patients (25 per cent) were proved MH-susceptible by in vitro contracture testing. No c

OBJECTIVE: In the esthetic field, the masseter muscle is commonly targeted by botulinum neurotoxin for facial contouring. However, multiple botulinum neurotoxin injections have been reported to cause muscle fibrosis. Ultrasonography can be useful for clinical consideration in such cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study presents nine cases of masseteric fibrosis caused by repeated botulinum neurotoxin injections with ultrasonographic analysis of full and partial masseteric fibrosis.
RESULTS: Repetitive botulinum neurotoxin injections resulted in reduced masseter muscle volume, which frequen

The masseter muscle was studied during postnatal development of the rabbit from the juvenile to adult stage in which the oral function was altered during maturation by modifying the diet to soft food. The muscle was assessed using phosphate magnetic resonance (31P NMR) spectroscopy with a single-turn copper surface coil to study potential changes in phosphate metabolism. The 31P NMR spectra consisted of five peaks related to unbound forms of inorganic phosphate (Pi), creatine phosphate (PCr), and three peaks related to the adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The masseter was assessed in one group of

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the masseter muscle changes after surgical-orthodontic treatment in patients with a skeletal Class III malocclusion using automatic segmentation.
METHODS: Images of 120 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion were obtained and reconstructed at T0 (pretreatment), T1 (presurgery), and T2 (6-12-month postsurgery). The patients were divided into symmetrical and asymmetrical groups. The volume, major axis length, maximum cross-sectional area, horizontal cross-sectional area 5 mm above the mandibular foramen (CSAF), and orientation were calculated automatica

BACKGROUND: The phenotype of large diameter sensory afferent neurons changes in several models of neuropathic pain. We asked if similar changes also occur in "functional" pain syndromes.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Acidic saline (AS, pH 4.0) injections into the masseter muscle were used to induce persistent myalgia. Controls received saline at pH 7.2. Nocifensive responses of Experimental rats to applications of Von Frey Filaments to the masseters were above control levels 1-38 days post-injection. This effect was bilateral. Botulinum neurotoxin toxin type A is widely used in the management of facial paralysis to reduce synkinesis and improve facial symmetry. Although the masseter muscle is not innervated by the facial nerve, aberrant reinnervation may lead to abnormal activity requiring treatment. We report the case of a 48-year-old woman with long-standing, partially regenerated right-sided facial palsy who developed paradoxical masseter muscle bulging following botulinum neurotoxin toxin type A injection. After a single injection targeting masseter hypertonicity, the patient exhibited a visible bulge during cle

Myositis ossificans (MO) is a reactive, localized, benign lesion that typically affects the extremities in younger people. It is a unique and uncommon condition that has been difficult to fully understand regarding its causes, development, and effective treatment. Commonly seen in muscles of arms, and thighs, it seldom includes the masticatory muscles. Severe trismus results if it affects the masticatory muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans are useful methods for identifying the calcified mass. Histopathology is essential for achieving an accurate diagnosis and pla

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders are common causes of chronic orofacial pain, and their diagnosis is largely based on subjective symptoms, such as pain and its laterality. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the masticatory muscles has traditionally focused on morphological parameters, such as muscle thickness, which provide valuable information; however, these measures alone may not fully reflect the functional and structural condition of muscle tissue. Quantitative assessment of echo intensity may provide an objective and reproducible metric for characterizing structural changes and moni

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Unilateral mastication is a complex problem affecting the masticatory muscles. Quantitative evaluation of the contraction efficiency of the muscles to determine what effect unilateral mastication has on them is lacking.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to investigate the differences in masseter and anterior temporal muscle thickness and elastography values between the masticatory and nonmasticatory sides in patients with unilateral mastication habits using ultrasonographic evaluation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five individuals with unilateral masticati

Post-traumatic myositis ossificans of the masseter is an uncommon cause of severe trismus without a standardized management pathway. A 23-year-old man developed progressive jaw stiffness six months after facial trauma, with maximal interincisal opening <10 mm. Imaging demonstrated mature heterotopic ossification bridging the mandibular ramus and zygomatic arch. Excision of the ossified masseter was performed via a combined intraoral and external approach. Trismus recurred within three months, and re-operation through the prior incision removed residual ossification with coronoidectomy. No adju

Intramuscular myxomas are myxoid neoplasms that mainly affect the muscles of the thigh, upper arm, and gluteus. In the head and neck region they are rare, and we know of only two reported cases in the masseter muscle. We think that this is the third. A 60-year-old woman presented with a painless nodule on the right side of her face. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined mass restricted to the muscle, with no infiltration into adjacent structures. Microscopic analysis confirmed the gross examination, and showed a tumour with copious myxoid stroma, scattered spindle to stellate cells,

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to provide the safest and most efficient site for injection of botulinum toxin type A into the masseter muscle.
STUDY DESIGN: This study was performed on 40 hemifaces from cadavers. The surface of the masseter was compartmentalized into areas I to VIII. Areas I, III, V, and VII were assigned to represent the upper 4 compartments from the posterior aspect of each muscle, and areas II, IV, VI, and VIII were assigned to represent the lower 4 compartments.
RESULTS: The parotid gland usually covered compartments I and II, and the marginal mandibular bran
