Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) are the most prevalent cetaceans in the North Sea. The fecal viral flora of 21 harbour porpoises stranded along the Dutch coastline was analyzed by a metagenomics approach. Sequences of a novel cetacean mastadenovirus, designated harbour porpoise adenovirus 1 (HpAdV-1), were detected. The sequence of a 23-kbp genomic region, spanning the conserved late region, was determined using primer walking. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that HpAdV-1 is most closely related to bottlenose dolphin adenovirus and clusters with Cetartiodactyla adenoviruses. The prevalen

In 2013, an adult red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) was found dead showing, during necropsy, acute diffuse catarrhal enteritis. Using a virus screening pipeline based on a pan-viral DNA microarray with downstream next-generation sequencing a novel squirrel-associated virus was identified with mastadenovirus-typical sequence elements. Phylogenetic analysis of hexon protein amino acid sequences demonstrated the highest similarity to Equine adenovirus (AdV) 2, but a strong divergence to a squirrel AdV from Korea and other rodent AdVs. Shorter hexon gene segment investigations confirmed a close rela

This paper describes the first detection of adenovirus in a Brazilian Desmodus rotundus bat, the common vampire bat. As part of a continuous rabies surveillance program, three bat specimens were captured in Southern Brazil. Total DNA was extracted from pooled organs and submitted to a nested PCR designed to amplify a 280 bp long portion of the DNA polymerase gene of adenoviruses. One positive sample was subjected to nucleotide sequencing, confirming that this DNA fragment belongs to a member of the genus Mastadenovirus. This sequence is approximately 25 % divergent at the nucleotide level from

Human mastadenoviruses (HAdVs) are DNA viruses that can cause a wide range of clinical diseases, including gastroenteritis, respiratory illnesses, conjunctivitis, and in more severe cases hepatitis, pancreatitis and disseminated diseases. HAdV infections are generally asymptomatic or self-limiting, but can cause adverse outcomes within vulnerable populations. Since most HAdV serotypes replicate within the human gastrointestinal tract, high levels of HAdV DNA are excreted into wastewater systems. In this study, we identified the genetic diversity of HAdV at a population level using wastewater s

Bats can harbor a diversity of viruses, such as adenovirus. Ten different species of bat adenoviruses (BtAdV A to J) have been previous described worlwide. In Brazil, BtAdV was described in three species of phyllostomid species: Artibeus lituratus, Desmodus rotundus, and Sturnira lilium. There are around 180 bat species in Brazil, with 67% inhabiting the Atlantic Forest, with few information about the circulation of BtAdV in this biome. We aimed to describe the molecular detection and the phylogenetic characterization and suggest a classification of BtAdVs circulating in bats from the Brazilia

Bovine adenoviruses (BAdV) are known to cause respiratory and/or intestinal disease in calves. Infection can manifest as acute outbreaks, but more often only sporadic cases occur. Here we describe the PCR detection and partial sequence characterization of several BAdVs found in sick or dead calves on different farms in Western Hungary. Intermittent diarrhoeal illnesses occurred after weaning among calves on several farms located up to 40 km apart. A high-sensitivity, broad-spectrum nested PCR, developed for the general detection of adenoviruses, gave positive results in four independent cases.

Adenoviruses are a ubiquitous group of viruses that have been found in a wide range of hosts. A novel adenovirus from a skunk suffering from acute hepatitis was isolated and its DNA genome sequenced. The analysis revealed this virus to be a new member of the genus Mastadenovirus, with a genome of 31,848 bp in length containing 30 genes predicted to encode proteins, and with a G+C content of 49.0%. Global genomic organization indicated SkAdV-1 was similar in organization to bat and canine adenoviruses, and phylogenetic comparison suggested these viruses shared a common ancestor. SkAdV-1 demonst

Eleven adult African pygmy hedgehogs ( Atelerix albiventris) were added to a group of 35 animals, and within 10 d, respiratory distress affected 8 of 35 resident animals in the group, but none of the introduced animals. Three animals died following onset of clinical signs. Tissues from one animal were collected and submitted for histopathology, which revealed acute necrotizing bronchopneumonia and tracheitis with intraepithelial intranuclear inclusion bodies. Electron microscopy identified 75-90 nm diameter encapsulated icosahedral virions. Degenerate nested PCR analysis identified adenovirus

Adenoviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses with broad relevance to human and animal health and considerable potential as therapeutic vectors. Despite extensive studies, the structural details of core and minor capsid proteins in adenoviruses remain poorly understood. In this study, the architecture of bovine adenovirus type 3 (BAdV-3), a member of the Mastadenovirus genus, was solved by cryo-electron microscopy. Our structure shows that BAdV-3 shares significant structural conservation with human adenoviruses. Atomic models were constructed for a previously uncharacterized region of the mino

Bats carry diverse RNA viruses, some of which are responsible for human diseases. Compared to bat-borne RNA viruses, relatively little information is known regarding bat-borne DNA viruses. In this study, we isolated and characterized three novel bat adenoviruses (BtAdV WIV9-11) from Rhinolophus sinicus. Their genomes, which are highly similar to each other but distinct from those of previously sequenced adenoviruses (AdVs), are 37 545, 37 566 and 38 073 bp in size, respectively. An unusually large E3 gene was identified in their genomes. Phylogenetic and taxonomic analyses suggested that these

Adenoviruses are important pathogens known to infect vertebrate hosts, including a wide range of primates. Despite its importance, data on the diversity of these viruses in non-human primates living in their natural habitat remain scarce. In this study, we conducted a surveillance of adenoviral infection in wild black howler monkeys from two protected natural areas in Mexico. This was achieved by analyzing 67 fecal samples using a nested PCR that targets the adenovirus DNA polymerase gene. Adenoviral DNA was detected in 12 samples from both study sites, with an overall prevalence of 17.9%. The

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory infection outbreaks pose a threat to the readiness of the United States and allied armed forces. Predicting and preventing such outbreaks requires understanding of the epidemiology of potential respiratory pathogens in communities where service members live and work. We conducted pan-viral surveillance of respiratory specimens from people living with HIV or without HIV but under the risk enrolled in the U.S. Military HIV Research Program's African Cohort Study to determine the prevalence and possible clinical presentation of viruses in this population.

We report the discovery and characterization of a novel adenovirus, Zoothera dauma adenovirus (ZdAdV), from a wild bird species, Zoothera dauma (Scaly thrush). This new atadenovirus was discovered by metagenomic sequencing without virus cultivation. Analyses of the full genome sequence revealed that this new virus is a distinct member of the genus Atadenovirus and represents a novel species. ZdAdV has a genome of 34,760 bp with 28 predicted genes and 39% GC content. ZdAdV is the first atadenovirus to contain ORF19, a gene previously found only in aviadenoviruses. Phylogenetic analysis of ORF19

Bats are important reservoirs for many zoonotic viruses. To explore and monitor potential novel viruses carried by bats, 21 liver samples of bats (Hipposideros armiger) were collected from Yunnan Province in southern China. Only one (4.8%) of all models was detected with adenovirus. The whole genome strain obtained by the viral metagenomics method combined with PCR was temporarily named YN01. The complete genome of YN01 was 37,676 bp, with a G + C content of 55.20% and 28 open reading frames. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the strain YN01 can be classified as genus Mastadenovirus and was

Wild birds harbour a vast diversity of adenoviruses that remain uncharacterised with respect to their genome organisation and evolutionary relatedness within complex host ecosystems. Here, we characterise a novel adenovirus type within Aviadenovirus genus associated with severe necrotising hepatitis in a captive Timneh grey parrot, tentatively named as Timneh grey parrot adenovirus 1 (TpAdV-1). The TpAdV-1 genome is 39,867 bp and encodes 46 putative genes with seven hitherto not described ones. Comparative genomics and phylogenetic analyses revealed highest nucleotide identity with psittacine

Species Human mastadenovirus E (HAdV-E) comprises several simian types and a single human type: HAdV-E4, a respiratory and ocular pathogen. RFLP analysis for the characterization of intratypic genetic variability has previously distinguished two HAdV-E4 clusters: prototype (p)-like and a-like. Our analysis of whole genome sequences confirmed two distinct lineages, which we refer to as phylogroups (PGs). PGs I and II comprise the p- and a-like genomes, respectively, and differ significantly in their G + C content (57.7% ± 0.013 vs 56.3% ± 0.015). Sequence differences distinguishing the two clad

BACKGROUND: Adenoviruses are important pathogens with the potential for interspecies transmission between humans and non-human primates. Although many adenoviruses have been identified in monkeys, the knowledge of these viruses from the Colobinae members is quite limited.
FINDINGS: We conducted a surveillance of viral infection in endangered golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) in the subfamily Colobinae in China, and found that 5.1% of sampled individuals were positive for adenovirus. One of the adenoviruses (SAdV-WIV19) was successfully isolated and its full-length genome was

Bovine adenovirus type 3 (BAdV3) is being used in the development of potential vehicles for gene therapy and vectored vaccine. To that end, a more comprehensive description of BAdV3 biology is essential. In this study, we focused on the role of pIX in BAdV3 virion rescue after full-length BAdV3 genome transfection. Initially, pIX deletion or initiation codon mutation abolished the production of progeny virions, which suggested that pIX was essential for the rescue of BAdV3 containing a full-length genome. Moreover, through transfection of a panel of pIX mutant BAdV3 genomes, we observed that t
