A novel reconstructive alternative for patients with severe facial structural deformity is Le Fort-based, face-jaw-teeth transplantation (FJTT). To date, however, only ten surgeries have included underlying skeletal and jaw-teeth components, all yielding sub-optimal results and a need for a subsequent revision surgery, due to size mismatch and lack of precise planning. Numerous studies have proven swine to be appropriate candidates for translational studies including pre-operative planning of transplantation. An important aspect of planning FJTT is determining the optimal muscle attachment sit

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is characterized by a bony mass that generally creates difficulty in 1 direction, opening the mouth. In this paper, the patient who presented was experiencing difficulty in 2 directions, both in opening and closing the mouth. A rare disabling condition of mastication and bidirectional ankylosis and its surgical treatment have been presented. Bidirectional temporomandibular joint ankylosis is a rare condition that disables the patient both to open and close the mouth. The left side of type 2 ankylosis (Sawhney, Plast Reconstr Surg 1986;77:29-38) was treat

Unilateral disto-occlusion of the molars and the canine teeth, described by Angle as Class II subdivision, is often characterized by asymmetric development of the maxillae in conjunction with a disturbance in physiological mastication. In addition to the unilateral malposition of the molars and the canine, this Class II subdivision condition is routinely accompanied by an ensemble of symptoms that the authors propose regrouping under the designation "children's acquired unilaterally dominant mastication syndrome". They use several clinical examples to illustrate the diagnosis of this condition

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a whole-joint degenerative disease primarily driven by excessive mechanical overloading, yet current therapies fail to harness biomechanical cues to halt cartilage degeneration. Here, we developed mastication-driven magnesium-incorporated piezoelectric nanofibers (MagPie) that could convert joint loading into localized electrical stimulation while releasing Mg2 + to neutralize the acidic microenvironment. Under mechanical stimulation, MagPie promoted chondrocyte anabolism and suppressed inflammation in vitro. In a rat temporomandibular joint OA model induced by overloadi

Muscle spindle abundance is highly variable in vertebrates, but the functional determinants of this variation are unclear. Recent work has shown that human leg muscles with the lowest abundance of muscle spindles primarily function to lengthen and absorb energy, while muscles with a greater spindle abundance perform active-stretch-shorten cycles with no net work, suggesting that muscle spindle abundance may be underpinned by muscle function. Compared with other mammalian muscles, the digastric muscle contains the lowest abundance of muscle spindles and, therefore, might be expected to generate

The aim of this study was to determine the functional activity of cranio-mandibular system in patients with TMG osteoarthrosis. The study included 20 patients with TMG osteoarthrosis and 20 healthy subjects representing control group. The EMG examination was performed according to standard protocol developed in Milan University. The symmetry index values in the group with TMG osteoarthrosis were lower than in the control group (78.76±12.29%), while Torque values were higher (8.53±14.62%). EMG standardized indexes allowed differentiating TMG osteoarthrosis.

Although the FEED database focuses on muscle activity patterns, it is equally suitable for other physiological recording and especially for synthesizing different types of information. The present contribution addresses the interaction between muscle activity and ligamentary stretch during mastication. The postorbital ligament is the thickened edge of a septum dividing the orbital contents from the temporal fossa and is continuous with the temporal fascia. As a tensile element, this fascial complex could support the zygomatic arch against the pull of the masseter muscle. An ossified postorbita

The quantification of biomechanical response of mandibular bone to mastication is an integral component for a key in understanding the biological consequence of masticatory functions. Understanding the response of mandibular bone to external loading may also well explain the mechanisms of bone turnover. In this study, three finite element (FE) models simulating the lower second premolar, first and second molars along with their supporting structures were developed to determine stress/strain levels and distribution under different occlusal loading. The changes in stress/strain values and profil

The relationship between the bone and muscles of mastication in hemifacial microsomia was studied using three-dimensional volumetric computed tomography scans and image processing techniques. High resolution head computed tomography scans were obtained from 31 patients with unilateral hemifacial microsomia and eight normal patients. Using three-dimensional volume renderings of bone, mandibular deformities in patients with hemifacial microsomia were classified using the Pruzansky system. For each patient, specific craniofacial bones (temporal bone, maxilla mandible) and the muscles of masticati

An epidermal cyst, also known as an epidermoid cyst or epidermal inclusion cyst, is the most prevalent type of cutaneous cyst. This noncancerous lesion can appear anywhere on the body, typically presenting as an asymptomatic dermal nodule with a visible central punctum. In the case presented herein, an epidermal cyst with uncommon features was misdiagnosed as a lymphatic malformation based on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 61-year-old man came to us with a swollen left cheek that had been present for 11 months. The preoperative MRI revealed a 3 × 3.8 × 4.6 cm lobulated cystic

The purpose of this study was to verify the inter-rater agreement level as a means of obtaining an efficiency measure of a standard mastication evaluation through video recordings. The studied population included oral breathing children and teenagers with maxillary atresia. The chewing aspects studied were mode of chewing and preferential chewing side. A white tag was placed on half the subjects' chins while the recordings were made. Two expert evaluators analyzed 54 video recordings at regular viewing speed. The lead author analyzed the same video recordings both at reduced speed and at reduc

OBJECTIVE: The buccinator muscle forms the lateral wall of the oral cavity. It is presumed to aid mastication by maintaining bolus position. Such a function would involve thickening the cheek, possibly compressing the alveolar bone and contributing to malocclusions. However, neither buccinator deformation nor its effect on pressure has been demonstrated. Our objective was to evaluate buccinator EMG during feeding, its changes in length and thickness, and the pressure exerted on its alveolar attachment, using miniature pigs as an animal model.
METHODS: EMG of the buccinator and other oral musc

A case of asymmetric increased fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in unilateral pterygomasseter muscles is shown. The authors report an example of intense F-18 FDG uptake in the benign pterygomasseteric muscle complex hypertrophy in a patient with a history of longstanding unilateral chewing.

A retrospective study of CT and MR examinations in 14 patients with benign and malignant tumors originating in the masticator space is presented. At presentation, 12 patients revealed tumor extension to adjacent regions and spaces. Perineural tumor spread along trigeminal nerve branches to the cavernous sinus and orbits was combined with facial pain, and/or numbness, ophthalmoplegia, and exophthalmus. Detailed analysis of tumor growth and spread, enhancement and signal features at CT and MR imaging indicated the tumor histology was, with a few exceptions, nonspecific. More extensive growth and

Steal syndrome is a vascular disorder characterized by the inappropriate alterations of blood flow through adjacent collateral blood vessels to compensate for ischemia in organs with severely reduced or lost blood flow. The result may lead to dysfunction or ischemia of the end organs supplied by the collateral vessels. A 76-year-old man presented with a recurring, transient right-sided amaurosis that lasted about 30 min when drinking and mastication during meals. Carotid ultrasound and angiography showed severe stenosis of the right common carotid artery, and retrograde flow of the right exter

In the elderly, masticatory function often presents failure in certain oral tasks due to impairment such as decline in muscular force, jaw or tongue motility, neuro-muscular coordination, tooth damage, malocclusion and saliva production. Great disparity is observed in the various and potentially cumulative oral declines that occur with ageing. Such difficulties may have an impact on food consumption and nutritional status. To obtain better understanding of the consequences of several oral deficiencies, a series of swallowable boluses were prepared in vitro with the AM2 masticator apparatus wit
