[Clinical management of masticatory muscle pain: an update of the recommendations].

Besides the different forms of odontalgia, myalgias of the masticatory muscles are the most frequent noninfectious complaints in the orofacial region. After summarizing the recommendations set forth by the Interdisciplinary Working Group of Orofacial Pain within the German Chapter of the IASP (German Pain Society), we present the current state of knowledge regarding the etiology, diagnosis, and therapeutic options, based on an extensive literature search. A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and the database of the Deutsche Zahnärztliche Zeitschrift.

Canine masticatory muscle disorders: a study of 29 cases.

The histopathologic features in temporalis muscle biopsies from 29 dogs with masticatory muscle disorders were characterized and used for their subgrouping: 2 without lesions, 3 with nonspecific changes, 7 with neurogenic atrophy, and 16 with myositis. The immunocytochemical and immunochemical features of the muscle biopsies and sera from those dogs were compared among the histopathologic subgroupings and compared with biopsies and sera from healthy dogs and dogs with polymyositis. Of the 14 biopsies from dogs with masticatory muscle myositis, 12 had immune complexes limited to type 2M fibers,

Genetic Landscape of Masticatory Muscle Tendon-Aponeurosis Hyperplasia.

Limited mouth opening is a characteristic of masticatory muscle tendon-aponeurosis hyperplasia (MMTAH). Although genetic involvement is suspected where familial onset is frequently observed, the genetic background of MMTAH is yet to be elucidated. In this study, we conducted whole genome sequencing of 10 patients with MMTAH and their family members when available. We also conducted RNA sequencing of normal temporal tendon (as disease region) and Achilles tendon (as control region) from commercially available pig samples. We identified 51 genes that had rare variants in patients with MMTAH and

MASTICATORY MUSCLE MYOSITIS IN A GRAY WOLF (CANIS LUPUS).

A 10-yr-old male, neutered gray wolf ( Canis lupus ) was presented for atrophy of the temporalis and masseter muscles. Clinical signs and magnetic resonance imaging were consistent with a myopathy. Positive serology for antibody titers directed against Type 2M myofibers, and the observation of a mixed mononuclear inflammatory cell infiltrate along with eosinophils and neutrophils within the temporalis muscle, were diagnostic for masticatory muscle myositis. Importantly, protozoal myositis was excluded based on other clinicopathologic data. The case highlights the potential for immune-mediated

A Pilot Study on the Estimation of Bite Force Using Electromyograms of the Masticatory Muscles.

BACKGROUND: It has not been established how electromyographic (EMG) data of masticatory muscles can estimate bite force (BF) during daily activities at home, such as eating and bruxism, utilising the EMG-BF correlation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between actual BF and BF estimated using corresponding EMG data and additional information on BF and EMG measured on a separate day. METHODS: Participants were 16 volunteers. The unilateral masseteric EMG was recorded during clenching tasks at 10 levels of force up to maximum voluntary clenching (MVC) twice on separa

The role of electrophysiological investigations of masticatory muscles in patients with persistent idiopathic facial pain.

INTRODUCTION: The authors tried to establish whether there is any electrophysiological difference of masticatory muscle activity between patients with persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP) and healthy subjects. METHODS: Twenty-eight PIFP patients (6 men and 22 women, mean age 40 years) and 28 normal subjects (12 men and 16 women, mean age 40 years) underwent EMG of temporal and masseter muscles before and after transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS). RESULTS: After TENS stimulation, the mean amplitude difference was found to be smaller than the baseline before TENS in the PIFP p

Tendinopathy of masticatory muscles: a narrative review on the potential pathogenetic mechanism and pain characteristics.

OBJECTIVES: Within the classifications of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), myofascial pain is the term used to describe the presence of pain arising from the fascia, at the level of the masticatory muscles. Additionally, myofascial pain has been traditionally divided into localized myofascial pain and myofascial pain with referral, to indicate the presence of pain in areas that are not in anatomical contiguity with the ones palpated. Nonetheless, these terms nowadays appear to be in contrast with the clinical finding that pain elicited upon masticatory muscle palpation is often reported at t
