Granulomatous mastitis is a rare and benign inflammatory condition of the breast most commonly affecting women of child-bearing age as well as patients on oral contraceptives. This condition is important to identify due to its diagnostic mimicry of malicious entities such as breast carcinoma. Clinical and radiological findings are nonspecific and may overlap with breast carcinomas, thus pathologic confirmation is often necessary for definitive diagnosis. Although cases of granulomatous mastitis have been described in cisgender females, there have been no reported cases in the transgender patie

BACKGROUND: Many cancers arise from sites of infection and inflammation. Results from animal studies indicate that inflammatory cells may facilitate neoplastic processes by orchestrating the tumor microenvironment. Little is known about the role of inflammation in the etiology of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to examine possible associations between a history of mastitis requiring hospitalization and subsequent risk of breast cancer.
METHODS: This cohort study of 2,577,565 women used data from several Swedish population-based registers, including the Inpatient Register and the Canc

BACKGROUND: Mastitis can be caused by ineffective positioning of the baby at the breast or restricted feeding. Infective mastitis is commonly caused by Staphylococcus Aureus. Incidence of mastitis in breastfeeding women may reach 33%. Effective milk removal, pain medication and antibiotic therapy have been the mainstays of treatment.
OBJECTIVES: This review aims to examine the effectiveness of antibiotic therapies in relieving symptoms for breastfeeding women with mastitis with or without laboratory investigation.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Tri

A serious outbreak of mastitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae is described. Shortly after drying off, three cows died of mastitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae and five other cows became seriously ill but survived. Sawdust contiminated with Klebsiella pneumoniae was identified as the most likely source of these infections. In addition to detection of possible sources of infection, another important aspect of eradication is the detection of quarters infected with Klebsiella pneumoniae. Rigorous application of these measures led to resolution of the outbreak within a few months.

The observational prospective study assesses the clinical utility of the California Mastitis Test (CMT) and electrical conductivity (EC) for mastitis diagnosis in Mediterranean buffaloes, for the first time. A total of 600 quarter-milk samples were aseptically collected from randomly selected, multiparous Mediterranean buffaloes. All samples were submitted to the reference laboratory for SCC and bacteriological milk culture (BMC), which served as the gold standard (GS), whereas the CMT and EC were recorded and performed on-farm immediately after milking. Based on the GS results, quarters were

A total of 143 secretions from clinical cases of summer mastitis (SM) in grazing cattle and from 89 cases of pyogenes mastitis (PM) in stabled cattle were examined bacteriologically. The typical bacteriological finding was a mixed flora in which the predominant organisms were Actinomyces pyogenes (SM-70%, PM-85%), Peptostreptococcus indolicus (54%, 54%), a microaerophilic coccus (Stuart-Schwan coccus) (26%, 25%), Fusobacterium necrophorum biovar B (22%, 12%), Bacteroides melaninogenicus (20%, 9%) and Streptococcus dysgalactiae (21%, 5%). We present the case of a 58-year-old female with celiac disease, obesity, and recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus who developed a rash on her left thigh which spread and progressed to her arms, face, and abdomen. A biopsy of the left forearm grew Mycobacterium haemophilum. Weeks after the diagnosis of the M. haemophilum skin infection, the patient underwent a screening mammogram which showed new masses in both breasts. A biopsy of a left breast mass revealed cystic granulomatous inflammation with scattered neutrophils and lymphocytes within fibroadipose tissue. PCR and sequencing from

Granulomatous lobular mastitis (GLM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease with unknown etiology, characterized by non-caseous granulomatous inflammation of the lobules, which infiltrate lymphocytes, neutrophils, plasma cells, monocytes, and eosinophils may accompany. GLM is often misdiagnosed as breast cancer due to the lack of specificity in clinical and imaging examinations, and therefore histopathology is the main basis for confirming the diagnosis. This review provides an overview of the pathological features of granulomatous lobular mastitis and cystic neutrophil granulomatous mastitis (

Mycoplasma bovis has recently been identified increasingly in dairy cows causing huge economic losses to the dairy industry. M. bovis is a causative agent for mastitis, pneumonia, endometritis, endocarditis, arthritis, otitis media, and many other clinical symptoms in cattle. However, some infected cows are asymptomatic or may not shed the pathogen for weeks to years. This characteristic of M. bovis, along with the lack of adequate testing and identification methods in many parts of the world until recently, has allowed the M. bovis to be largely undetected despite its increased prevalence in

BACKGROUND: Despite the health benefits of breastfeeding, initiation and duration rates continue to fall short of international guidelines. Many factors influence a woman's decision to wean; the main reason cited for weaning is associated with lactation complications, such as mastitis. Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast, with or without infection. It can be viewed as a continuum of disease, from non-infective inflammation of the breast to infection that may lead to abscess formation.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of preventive strategies (for example, breastfeeding education,

Immunoglobulin G4-related sclerosing mastitis (IgG4-RM) is a recently recognised member of the IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) family, a multisystem fibroinflammatory condition that can affect any organ system. IgG4-RM is rare and predominantly occurs in middle-aged women. It may present with painless palpable mass and/or lymphadenopathy thereby mimicking breast cancer. Although there is an abundance of literature describing the clinicopathological characteristics of IgG4-RD in a variety of organs, data on IgG4-RM are limited due to its rarity. This review describes the manifestation of the dis

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell mastitis is distinct from the common form of mastitis and clinically resembles breast carcinoma. The lesion occurs in non-lactating young women, and the incidence rate is rising. Surgical resection is the main treatment, but cannot prevent recurrence of the disease. Disfigurement or removal of breast after the operations can cause marked physical and psychological distress. The etiology of plasma cell mastitis is unclear up till now. It is therefore necessary to investigate further the underlying immunological changes of the disease.
METHODS: The lesions of plasma cell

Good udder health is not only important for the dairy farmer but, because of increasing interest of consumers in the way dairy products are produced, also for the dairy production chain as a whole. An important role of veterinarians is in advising on production diseases such as mastitis. A large part of this advice is given around the planning of management to maintain or improve the udder health status of a farm. Mastitis is a costly disease, due to losses (a reduction of output due to mastitis) and expenditure (additional inputs to reduce the level of mastitis). Worldwide, published estimate

Lupus mastitis represents a subset of breast-limited lupus panniculitis, and occurs very rarely in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. We report a case of a 33-year-old white woman with a previous history of systemic lupus erythematosus, complaining of an acute tenderness and pain in the right breast associated with localized skin erythema. Ultrasound and mammography reports from a private breast clinic, where she was scheduled for core needle biopsy, aroused suspicion of a breast tumor. Clinically the patient had a painful mass suggestive of an inflammatory lump with an abscess. Her d

The role of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococcal exosecretions in bovine udder infection was tested by monitoring the cows' response to in vivo inoculation of bacterial exosecretions into udder quarters. Twenty Israeli-Holstein dairy cows were included in the study; two or three of the udder quarters of each cow were intracisternally inoculated with 0.04-0.05 mg/quarter (total proteins) of the various sterile bacterial exosecretions in a sterile pyrogen-free saline. Each udder was inoculated with two or three different bacterial exosecretions or placebo (Columbia Broth).

The frequency of biopsies with different types of mastitis among all patients with benign breast diseases in twenty years was 3%. About 2/3 of the patients were younger than 50 years, the average age was 46.7 years. Comparing the frequency of the different types of mastitis the puerperal mastitis is very rare in contrast to the increasing non-puerperal and granulomatous inflammatory breast lesions. The diagnosis "granulomatous mastitis" is one of exclusion. Both non-infectious and infectious causes must be considered. The origin of the granulomatous mastitis often is unknown, but it is suppose
