Differences in maternal behavior of rats and the sociosexual development of the offspring.

This paper describes experiments designed to investigate long-term behavioral consequences for offspring of changes in maternal behavior directed toward them as pups. Specifically, the hypothesis was considered that experimentally induced alterations in maternal behavior would result in general and wide-ranging effects on offspring development, including effects on later social and sexual behavior. The first experiment looked at the effects of changing pup odors on maternal responsiveness toward the pups, and showed that the application of perfume, particularly to the anogenital region, result

History of perinatal loss and maternal-fetal attachment behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Maternal-fetal attachment (MFA) is an important requirement for optimal maternal-infant adaptation. Current studies showed conflicting findings about whether a history of perinatal loss (fetal/neonatal death) affects maternal attachment in pregnancy. RESEARCH QUESTION: "Does a history of perinatal loss affect maternal-fetal attachment behaviors?" METHODS: One hundred women with and without a history of PL were recruited using a convenience method of sampling, from prenatal care services affiliated to Shahid Behesti University of Medical Sciences. Data collected by questionnaires

Childhood medical and behavioral consequences of maternal cocaine use.

Reviewed available studies of the impact of fetal cocaine exposure on child medical and developmental outcome, as well as the current status of clinical psychological interventions and research strategies. Current studies are inconclusive but suggest that prenatal exposure to crack-cocaine can have significant effects on the growth and neurological development of the infant, with the potential of later learning and behavioral disabilities. Social-environmental correlates of maternal cocaine use are confounding factors with known negative effects on child outcome. Large, population-based studie

Developmental and behavioral effects of maternal alcohol exposure in rats.

Fostered rat offspring whose mothers had been administered 7.5% alcohol solution (4.85 g/kg/day) as drinking fluid during 0-17 days of gestation were compared with equivalent groups whose dams had given ad libitum and restricted volume of tap water in the following behavioral tests: reflex test, swimming behavior test, open-field test, radial-maze learning and two-way avoidance learning. The treatment with alcohol resulted in developmental delay in ear-flaps uncurling, placing reflex, swimming behavior, walking in addition to reduction in body weight at 1 and 7 days of age. The treated group a

Maternal immune activation influences social behavior development in a nonhuman primate model.

BACKGROUND: Women exposed to infection during pregnancy have an increased risk of giving birth to a child who will later be diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) characterized by changes in social development, such as autism and schizophrenia. Preclinical rodent models of maternal immune activation (MIA) have established causal links between elevated maternal cytokines and offspring social deficits indicative of human NDDs. METHODS: Here, we use a unique nonhuman primate (NHP) MIA model to explore the longitudinal development of social behavior, given their phylogenetic similarit

Natural variations in maternal behavior shape anxiety and hippocampal neurogenesis in offspring.

Understanding the mechanisms of individualization of emotional traits is crucial for the development of personalized medicine in mood disorders. Although previous research focused on genetic differences or experimental manipulations of maternal care, it is unclear whether natural variations in maternal care in the absence of genetic variability influence anxiety-related behavior and neurogenesis. We addressed this question by observing inbred mouse maternal care and offspring in a longitudinal manner. We found that mothers spontaneously displaying low maternal care showed lower adult neurogene

Maternal folic acid modulates neurotrophins and behavior in an animal schizophrenia model.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including maternal folic acid (FA) deficiency. This study evaluated whether maternal FA supplementation could prevent behavioral and biochemical alterations in offspring exposed to the Poly(I:C)-induced SZ model, a viral RNA analog (2 mg/kg). Female Wistar rats (n = 48) received at doses FA 5 or 10 mg/kg, or vehicle (control), throughout preconception, gestation, and lactation. After lactation, maternal rats underwent locomotor activity and forced swim tests. Adult offspring were subjecte

Maternal immune suppression during pregnancy does not prevent abnormal behavior in offspring.

BACKGROUND: Offspring of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are at an increased risk of developing neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral disorders compared to offspring from non-affected pregnancies. Using rodent models of Preeclampsia (PreE; new onset of hypertension after 20 weeks gestation) and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets), we studied the behavioral outcome of their offspring in adolescence. METHODS: A subset of dams received Orencia, a T-cell activation inhibitor, as T cells have been associated with the induction of hypertension and inflammation during p

Maternal diet influences offspring feeding behavior and fearfulness in the precocial chicken.

BACKGROUND: In chicken, oils in the maternal diet confer a specific scent to the yolk. Embryos are known to perceive and memorize chemosensory signals of the surrounding environment; however, the potential impact of the maternal diet has not previously been investigated. In the present study, we hypothesized that chicken embryos memorize the chemical signals of the maternal diet and that this perceptual learning may orient subsequent feeding behavior of the hatchlings. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Laying hens were fed standard food enriched with 2% menhaden oil (MH group) or 2% soybean oil

Comparison of two rodent models of maternal separation on juvenile social behavior.

Early childhood deprivation is associated with an increased risk of attachment disorders and psychopathology. The neural consequences of exposure to stress early in life have used two major rodent models to provide important tools for translational research. Although both models have been termed maternal separation (MS), the paradigms differ in ways that clearly shift the focus of stress between maternal and offspring units. The first model, here called early deprivation (ED), isolates pups individually while the dam is left not alone, but with a subset of littermates in the home nest ("stay-a

Maternal behavior in cyclic and androgenized female rats: role of ovarian hormones.

A comparative study on the induction of maternal behavior (MB) in response to pups was carried out in cyclic and androgenized rats. Moreover, the effects of exposure to ovarian hormones on the induction of MB in response to pups were studied in cyclic and androgenized rats. A high percentage of androgenized and proestrus rats displayed MB after 48 hr of exposure to pups (87.9% and 87.5% respectively). Diestrus day-1 rats were significantly less maternal (37.5%). Ovariectomy did not impair MB in androgenized rats. High serum progesterone levels induced in androgenized rats by treatment with 10

Maternal mental health and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors: Beyond maternal substance use disorders.

Maternal substance abuse and mental disorders can have adverse impacts on child development. We investigated the impact of maternal mental health on child behaviors based on a long-term follow-up study of mothers and their children approximately 10 years after mothers' admission to drug abuse treatment. Mothers (n=396) were assessed at admission to drug treatment during 2000 to 2002, and at follow-up in 2010-2011. At follow-up, each mother was asked to assess one target child using the Child Behavior Checklist for ages 6-18 (CBCL). Mothers' mental disorder diagnoses were obtained from records

Maternal Childhood Maltreatment and Offspring Emotional and Behavioral Problems: Maternal and Paternal Mechanisms of Risk Transmission.

This study examined hostility and harsh discipline of both mothers and fathers as potential mechanisms explaining the association between a maternal maltreatment history and her offspring's internalizing and externalizing problems. Prospective data from fetal life to age 6 were collected from a total of 4,438 families participating in the Generation R Study. Maternal maltreatment was assessed during pregnancy using a self-administered questionnaire. Mothers and fathers each reported on their psychological distress and harsh discipline when the child was 3 years. Children's internalizing and ex

Individual differences in symptoms of maternal depression and associations with parenting behavior.

Links between global levels of maternal depressive symptoms and parenting behavior in early childhood are well established. However, depression is a heterogeneous disorder and little is known about how individual differences in depression symptoms may be differentially associated with different types of parenting behavior. We aimed to uncover nuance in the relationship between depression and parenting behavior by examining individual differences in symptoms of maternal depression and associations with parenting behavior with 2- and 3-year-old children. Participants included 714 diverse, low-in
