Chronic arsenic exposure affects over 140 million people globally. While arsenic easily crosses the placenta, the specific mechanisms impacting placental immune cell populations and fetal health are unclear. Maternal arsenic exposure is epidemiologically linked to increased infection risk, mortality, and cancer susceptibility in offspring, emphasizing the importance of understanding placentally-mediated immune effects. This review explores the potential role of the placenta, a key organ for immune transfer to the developing fetus, in mediating chronic low-dose arsenic exposure effects. Examini

BACKGROUND: Chorioamnionitis has long been regarded as an infection-driven obstetric disorder, yet converging clinical, pathological, and mechanistic evidence demonstrates that host-derived inflammatory pathways, together with microbial factors, critically shape placental injury, fetal involvement, and neonatal outcomes. Histological inflammation of the chorioamniotic membranes correlates more strongly with adverse outcomes than microbial detection alone, underscoring the importance of host immune responses even in the context of microbial invasion.
PURPOSE: This review aims to synthesize cur

Industrialization has led to significant increases in the types and quantities of pollutants, with environmental pollutants widely present in various media, including the air, food, and everyday items. These pollutants can enter the human body via multiple pathways, including ingestion through food and absorption through the skin; this intrusion can disrupt the production, release, and circulation of hormones in the body, resulting in a range of illnesses that affect the reproductive, endocrine, and nervous systems. Consequently, these pollutants pose substantial risks to human health. In part

Microchimerism (MC) refers to the presence of small amounts of foreign cells or DNA in the tissues or circulation of an individual. It generally occurs through mother-fetus interaction, twin pregnancies, and intergenerational transmission. MC is influenced by genetic and environmental factors such as toxic conditions, immunological suppression, and various diseases (influenza, COVID-19, etc.). Progenitor cells transferred from the fetus to the mother through fetal MC are known to differentiate into neurons in the maternal brain. Although the relationship between these cells and the brain is no

INTRODUCTION: Fetal cell microchimerism (FCM) is defined as the persistence of fetal cells in the mother for decades after pregnancy without any apparent rejection. Fetal microchimeric cells (fmcs) engraft the maternal bone marrow and are able to migrate through the circulation and to reach tissues. In malignancies, the possible role of fmcs is still controversial, several studies advising a protective and repairing function, and other postulating a beneficial role in the progression of the disease. At the peripheral blood level, FCM is less frequently observed in women with several solid and

Administration of antiviral drugs to pregnant women with influenza, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections is widely accepted as an effective treatment to safeguard the health of the mother and fetus. This review deals with the transfer of antiviral drugs to the fetus across the placental barrier, which is formed by an epithelial layer of syncytiotrophoblasts. First, the structure, function, and developmental change of the placenta and the placental barrier are briefly presented. We then review the transplacental permeability of antiviral drugs, such as o

The placenta operates during gestation as the primary communication organ between the mother and fetus. It is essential for gas, nutrient exchange, and fetal waste transfer. The placenta also produces a wide range of hormones and other factors that influence maternal physiology, including survival and activity of the corpus luteum of the ovary, but the means whereby the placenta shapes fetal development remain less clear, although the fetal brain is thought to be dependent upon the placenta for factors that play roles in its early differentiation and growth, giving rise to the term "placenta-b

Cadmium is a well-known teratogen in laboratory animals and a widespread environmental pollutant. The frequencies of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs), nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) and chromosomal aberrations were analysed in maternal bone marrow and fetal liver and/or lung cells of mice, following maternal treatment with cadmium chloride, on gestational days 8 through 10. The embryotoxic effects and morphological changes on day 18 fetuses were also studied. Cadmium chloride is readily transferred across the placenta and significant levels were detected in both the placenta and fetus. N

INTRODUCTION: Iron is an essential micronutrient in the growing fetus.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to find the possible correlations that may exist between maternal and fetal iron status and newborn weight.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 97 mothers scheduled to give birth by elective caesarean section in the central maternity of Tébessa (east of Algeria) between January and August 2014. The blood collection was sampled from the antecubital vein of the mother and the umbilical vein. The mean concentrations of parameters in maternal and fetal sides, respectively, were 10.

The leading cause of perinatal mortality is fetal growth restriction (FGR), defined as in utero fetal growth below the 10th percentile. Insufficient exchange of oxygen and nutrients at the maternal-fetal interface is associated with FGR. This transport occurs through the vasculature of the placenta, particularly in the terminal villi, where the vascular membranes have a large surface area and are the thinnest. Altered structure of the placenta villi is thought to contribute to decreased oxygen exchange efficiency, however, understanding how the three-dimensional microstructure and properties d

The placenta establishes the maternal-fetal interface during pregnancy, enabling the selective exchange of nutrients and gases between maternal and fetal circulations. In humans and mice, this exchange surface is lined by multinucleated epithelial layers called the syncytiotrophoblast (SynT), which in the mouse placenta is organized into two distinct layers, SynT-I and SynT-II. SynT formation from trophoblast precursors requires epithelial plasticity to permit cell differentiation, fusion, and morphogenesis, while preserving epithelial integrity to maintain the maternal-fetal exchange barrier.

In epidemiological studies on the health effect of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure, maternal-hair mercury concentration has been used as an exposure biomarker because of its ease of collection and capability to recapture the exposure history. However, artificial hair-waving reduces the mercury concentration and there is little agreement about which part of the hair strand properly represents fetal exposure. We presented an overview of the studies addressing umbilical cord and mercury in PubMed and evaluated the usefulness of umbilical cord mercury concentrations as biomarkers of fetal exposure t

The placenta is a highly specialized organ that mediates nutrient exchange, hormone production, and immune regulation at the maternal-fetal interface. Its dynamic architecture and function throughout gestation present significant challenges in studying placental biology and associated obstetric complications. Emerging developments in bioengineering offer innovative approaches to create physiologically relevant placental models that overcome the constraints of traditional in vitro and in vivo systems. This review highlights progress in microfluidic and organ-on-a-chip systems, spheroid and orga

Cadmium (Cd) poses developmental risks during pregnancy, yet single time-point biomarkers inadequately capture cumulative fetal internal dose. We developed a pregnancy-specific semi-mechanistic physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model to estimate fetal Cd exposure trajectories in 2778 mother-infant pairs from the Korea Children's Environmental Health Study (Ko-CHENS). The ten-compartment maternal-fetal model incorporated serial blood Cd at early (T1; gestational weeks 12-16) and late pregnancy (T3; weeks 28-34) with paired cord blood Cd, and was individually parameterized using four

In 30 experiments we perfused the fetal side of the sheep placenta with fluids which had different solubilities for argon, N2, and O2 (dextran, blood, and fluorocarbon emulsions). In some of the experiments we partially exchange-transfused the ewe with the fluorocarbon emulsion. By these procedures we were able to change the physical solubility of argon and N2 severalfold in the fetal perfusion fluid and maternal blood. We found that the diffusing capacity for argon and N2 did not increase with increases in physical solubility in the fetal perfusion medium or in maternal blood. This indicated

Children are not only being born into a chemically toxic world, they are exposed to these toxins throughout their gestational development. They are exposed to hundreds of toxic compounds via cord blood and release many of them in the meconium. These toxins include numerous neuro-, immuno-, and endocrine-toxic compounds present during the critical stages of hormonal, immunological, and neurological development. Outcome studies have shown that animal and human offspring who are so exposed can not only be born with birth defects, but suffer from lifelong health and behavior problems. This article

Trisomy 21 is the most frequent genetic anomaly leading to mental retardation, and is prenatally diagnosed by fetal karyotyping usually performed on amniotic fluid cells. Amniocentesis is offered to patients according to three criteria: maternal age (over 38 years), fetal anomalies detected by ultrasonography, and abnormal maternal serum markers most of which are produced by the placenta. Placental development in trisomy 21 is poorly understood. We therefore studied the syncytiotrophoblast, which plays a key role in pregnancy through its involvement in fetal-maternal exchanges and in the secre

Eutherian placenta, an organ that emerged in the course of mammalian evolution, provides essential architecture, the so-called feto-maternal interface, for fetal development by exchanging nutrition, gas and waste between fetal and maternal blood. Functional defects of the placenta cause several developmental disorders, such as intrauterine growth retardation in humans and mice. A series of new inventions and/or adaptations must have been necessary to form and maintain eutherian chorioallantoic placenta, which consists of capillary endothelial cells and a surrounding trophoblast cell layer(s).

The placenta is crucial to fetal development and performs vital functions such as nutrient exchange, waste removal and hormone regulation. Abnormal placental development can lead to conditions such as fetal growth restriction, pre-eclampsia and stillbirth, affecting both immediate and long-term fetal health. Placental development is a highly complex process involving interactions between maternal and fetal components, imprinted genes, signaling pathways, mitochondria, fetal sexomes and environmental factors such as diet, supplementation and exercise. Probiotics have been shown to make a signif
