Numerical Magnitude Representation in Children With Mathematical Difficulties With or Without Reading Difficulties.

This study aimed to explore the spatial numerical association of response codes (SNARC), the flanker, and the numerical distance effects in children with mathematical difficulties. From a sample of 720 third, fourth, and fifth graders, 60 children were selected and divided into the following three groups: typically developing children (TD; n = 29), children with mathematical difficulties only (MD only; n = 21), and children with mathematical and reading difficulties (MD+RD; n = 10). Children were tested with a numerical Eriksen task that was built to assess SNARC, numerical distance, and flank

Enhancing mathematics learning through finger-counting: A study investigating tactile strategies in 2 visually impaired cases.

Finger-counting plays a crucial role in grounding and establishing mathematics, one of the most abstract domains of human cognition. While the combination of visual and proprioceptive information enables the coordination of finger movements, it was recently suggested that the emergence of finger-counting primarily relies on visual cues. In this study, we aimed to directly test this assumption by examining whether explicit finger-counting training (through tactile stimulation) may assist visually impaired children in overcoming their difficulties in learning mathematics. Two visually impaired p

Stability of periodic solution for a free boundary problem modeling small plaques.

Mathematical models describing the growth of plaque in the arteries (e.g., Friedman and Hao (2015), Friedman et al. (2015), Hao and Friedman (2014), McKay et al. (2005) and Mukherjee et al. (2019)) were introduced. All of these models include the interaction of the "bad" cholesterols, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and the "good" cholesterols, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), in triggering whether plaque will grow or shrink. Because the blood vessels tend to be circular, 2D cross-section model is a good approximation, and the 2D models are studied in Friedman et al. (2015), Zhang et al. (2023)

Dynamics of a Mosquito Egg-Larvae Model with Seasonality.

We propose a two stages mosquito egg-larvae model with seasonality as a simplification of a four stages one. For the simplified model we characterize the dynamics in terms of the vectorial reproduction number, [Formula: see text], obtaining extinction if [Formula: see text] and convergence to a unique positive periodic orbit if [Formula: see text]. We illustrate each case with an example, by providing general conditions on the periodic coefficients for its occurrence. These examples are further developed using numerical simulations where the periodic parameters satisfy the conditions obtained.

Modeling Syphilis and HIV Coinfection: A Case Study in the USA.

Syphilis and HIV infections form a dangerous combination. In this paper, we propose an epidemic model of HIV-syphilis coinfection. The model always has a unique disease-free equilibrium, which is stable when both reproduction numbers of syphilis and HIV are less than 1. If the reproduction number of syphilis (HIV) is greater than 1, there exists a unique boundary equilibrium of syphilis (HIV), which is locally stable if the invasion number of HIV (syphilis) is less than 1. Coexistence equilibrium exists and is stable when all reproduction numbers and invasion numbers are greater than 1. Using

How learning misconceptions can improve outcomes and youth engagement with gambling education programs.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling education programs typically focus on promoting gambling as a high-risk activity with harmful effects; however, these programs demonstrate limited effects on the prevention of gambling problems. This paper proposes a clear theoretical framework to inform the content and delivery of gambling education initiatives and draws on psychological and pedagogical research to address some of the practical issues associated with its implementation. METHODS: Literature was reviewed across fields of psychology, public health, and pedagogy to provide key recommendations to imp

Measurement and interpretation of a maxillary occlusal cant in the frontal plane.

PURPOSE: A cant of the maxillary intermolar (M1-M1) plane is a reflection of facial asymmetry and can be measured on an anterior-posterior cephalogram in degrees relative to the true horizontal or directly on the patient as the difference in millimeters between the right and left medial canthi to canine distances. The purpose of this study is to measure the correlation between the maxillary cant measured in degrees and measured in millimeters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We hypothesize that the number of degrees of maxillary cant equals the millimeter difference between the lengths of the 2 sides

Sign Language in Light of Mathematics Education: An Exploration Within Semiotic and Embodiment Theories of Learning Mathematics.

Research rarely focuses on how deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students address mathematical ideas. Complexities involved in using sign language (SL) in mathematics classrooms include not just challenges, but opportunities that accompany mathematics learning in this gestural-somatic medium. The authors consider DHH students primarily as learners of mathematics, and their SL use as a special case of language in the mathematics classroom. More specifically, using SL in teaching and learning mathematics is explored within semiotic and embodiment perspectives to gain a better understanding of how u

Using the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) to predict the risk of heat related deaths.

Extremes of climate are not uncommon in Australia and heatwaves are not infrequent. Periods of high ambient temperature may result in clusters of heat related deaths, which may place strain on forensic facilities. This paper describes the formulation of the Excess Heat Factor using meteorological data to provide a means of predicting death resulting from periods of extreme heat stress. The 2009 South Australian heatwave had the highest ranked Excess Heat Factor in Adelaide's records. There were 58 heat related deaths, with the bulk of the heat related deaths following the peak Excess Heat Fact

Technology-assisted instruction with teacher prompts on fraction multiplication word problems: A single-case design with visual analysis and Bayesian multilevel modeling.

This study examines the effects of technology-assisted instruction with teacher prompts on the ability to visualize and solve fraction multiplication word problems for four middle school students with learning disabilities. A multiple-probe design across participants, a type of single-case design, showed a functional relationship between the intervention and the targeted mathematical outcomes. Although there were some fluctuations over time, students demonstrated improvements from the baseline to intervention phases (Tau ranged from 0.76 to 1.00 for visualization and was 1.00 for problem-solvi

Comparative effectiveness of topical drugs in dermatologic priority diseases: geometry of randomized trial networks.

This commentary explores the fundamentals of network theory, a branch of applied mathematics that has numerous applications in many fields. Maruani et al. (2014) used network theory to analyze the geometry of the evidence base for dermatologic treatments. This is a prime example of the innovative nature of network theory: the mapping of a complex system into an abstract geometry for easier analysis. The interpretation rests upon the two concepts of diversity and co-occurrence. The mathematical foundation of these concepts is briefly reviewed. In addition, examples of the application of network

A New Stepping-Stone on the Path to Mathematics Success for DHH Learners.

Coeditors of a special issue of the American Annals of the Deaf on mathematics instruction in deaf education, the authors provide a context for the five featured articles. First, the authors establish the importance of mathematics. They then give a historical account of previously related "stepping-stones." Beginning at 1990, the authors follow key events in the field that have led to the special issue. They summarize each article, highlighting three common themes: deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) persons as distinct and capable mathematics learners, the significance of conceptual understanding

Developmental Dyscalculia is Characterized by Order Processing Deficits: Evidence from Numerical and Non-Numerical Ordering Tasks.

This study tested the hypothesis that individuals with dyscalculia have an order processing deficit. The ordering measures included both numerical and non-numerical ordering tasks, and ordering of both familiar and novel sequences was assessed. Magnitude processing/estimation tasks and measures of inhibition skills were also administered. The participants were 20 children with developmental dyscalculia, and 20 children without maths difficulties. The two groups were closely matched on age, gender, socio-economic status, educational experiences, IQ and reading ability. The findings revealed dif

The Epistemology of the Near Miss and Its Potential Contribution in the Prevention and Treatment of Problem-Gambling.

The near-miss has been considered an important factor of reinforcement in gambling behavior, and previous research has focused more on its industry-related causes and effects and less on the gaming phenomenon itself. The near-miss has usually been associated with the games of slots and scratch cards, due to the special characteristics of these games, which include the possibility of pre-manipulation of award symbols in order to increase the frequency of these "engineered" near-misses. In this paper, we argue that starting from a basic mathematical description of the classical (by pure chance)

Conservation Abilities, Visuospatial Skills, and Numerosity Processing Speed: Association With Math Achievement and Math Difficulties in Elementary School Children.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the associations between elementary school children's mathematical achievement and their conservation abilities, visuospatial skills, and numerosity processing speed. We also assessed differences in these abilities between children with different types of learning problems. In Study 1 ( N = 229), we investigated second to fourth graders and in Study 2 ( N = 120), third and fourth graders. Analyses revealed significant contributions of numerosity processing speed and visuospatial skills to math achievement beyond IQ. Conservation abilities were pr

Supramolecular tilt chirality in crystals of steroids and alkaloids.

The concept of supramolecular chirality has assumed increasing importance in association with the development of supramolecular chemistry over the last two decades. In chiral crystals, 2 1 helical molecular assemblies are frequently observed as key motifs. Helical handedness of the 2 1 assemblies, however, has not been determined from the mathematical or crystallographical viewpoints. In this context, we have proposed two new concepts, three-axial chirality and tilt chirality. On the basis of the concepts, we describe supramolecular chirality and determine the handedness of 2 1 assemblies that

Do analog number representations underlie the meanings of young children's verbal numerals?

Children learn to count, and even learn the cardinal meanings of the first three or four verbal numerals ("one" through "three" or "four"), before they master the numerical significance of counting. If so, it follows that the cardinal meanings of those first few numerals cannot be derived, initially, from their place in the count list and the counting routine. What non-verbal representations, then, support the cardinal meanings of verbal numerals before children have mastered how counting does so? Four experiments addressed the commonly adopted assumption that in the earliest period of learnin

One, Two, Three, Four… What's More? Successor Relations, not Mappings to Approximate Magnitudes, Support Learning the Later-Greater Principle.

As we count up, number words that occur later in our count denote greater quantities. Here, we tested whether children's understanding of this "later-greater" principle originates from associating number words with approximate magnitudes, or if instead it arises from knowledge of successor relations between individual number words. In Experiment 1 (N = 60), we found that children can identify the greater of two small number words (e.g., "six" vs. "ten") based on associative mappings between number words and the ANS but do not rely on such mappings to compare larger numbers (e.g., "twenty-four"
