Usability of American Sign Language Videos for Presenting Mathematics Assessment Content.

There is considerable interest in determining whether high-quality American Sign Language videos can be used as an accommodation in tests of mathematics at both K-12 and postsecondary levels; and in learning more about the usability (e.g., comprehensibility) of ASL videos with two different types of signers - avatar (animated figure) and human. The researchers describe the results of administering each of nine pre-college mathematics items in both avatar and human versions to each of 31 Deaf participants with high school and post-high school backgrounds. This study differed from earlier studie

Specialization of the Right Intraparietal Sulcus for Processing Mathematics During Development.

Mathematical ability, especially perception of numbers and performance of arithmetics, is known to rely on the activation of intraparietal sulcus (IPS). However, reasoning ability and working memory, 2 highly associated abilities also activate partly overlapping regions. Most studies aimed at localizing mathematical function have used group averages, where individual variability is averaged out, thus confounding the anatomical specificity when localizing cognitive functions. Here, we analyze the functional anatomy of the intraparietal cortex by using individual analysis of subregions of IPS ba

The cognitive and academic profiles of reading and mathematics learning disabilities.

The purpose of this study was to examine the cognitive and academic profiles associated with learning disability (LD) in reading comprehension, word reading, applied problems, and calculations. The goal was to assess the specificity hypothesis, in which unexpected underachievement associated with LD is represented in terms of distinctive patterns of cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. At the start of 3rd grade, the authors assessed 684 students on five cognitive dimensions (nonverbal problem solving, processing speed, concept formation, language, and working memory), and across Gr

Are poor mathematics skills associated with visual deficits in temporal processing?

Developmental learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dyscalculia have a high rate of co-occurrence in pediatric populations, suggesting that they share underlying cognitive and neurophysiological mechanisms. Dyslexia and other developmental disorders with a strong heritable component have been associated with reduced sensitivity to coherent motion stimuli, an index of visual temporal processing on a millisecond time-scale. Here we examined whether deficits in sensitivity to visual motion are evident in children who have poor mathematics skills relative to other children of the same age. We

[Learning difficulties in mathematics in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning difficulties are two diagnostic categories of great social importance and impact, and which are associated in around 25-35% of cases. One explanation offered by researchers to account for this overlap is a deficit in executive functioning (EF). AIMS: 1) To compare EF and applied mathematical knowledge in children with ADHD, difficulties in learning mathematics (DLM) or ADHD + DLM, and to identify the deficiencies they experience. 2) To verify whether the phenotype hypothesis is fulfilled in the case of the ADHD + DLM c

[Children with a specific weakness in mathematics in a referred population].

In the present study children with dycalculia were described and compared with children with specific reading and spelling disabilities and children without clinical diagnosis. All children were referred to a child psychiatric outpatient and inpatient department. The comparison was carried out over clinical data drawn from the general data documentation and from written case reports including diagnostical, anamnestical, symptomatological and developmental neurological data. More than 50% of the dyscalculic children displayed other child psychiatric disorders, especially emotional disorders. It

The contributions of executive functions to mathematical learning difficulties and mathematical talent during adolescence.

Are mathematical learning difficulties caused by impairment of the abilities that underlie mathematical talent? Or are mathematical difficulties and talent qualitatively different? The main goal of this study was to determine whether mathematical learning difficulties are explained by the same executive functions as mathematical talent. We screened a pool of 2,682 first-year high school students and selected 48 for evaluation, dividing them into three groups: those with mathematical learning difficulties (n = 16), those with typical performance (n = 16), and those with mathematical talent (n =

A meta-analysis on mathematical deficits among Chinese children with mathematical learning difficulties.

Previous studies have found that children with mathematical learning difficulties (MLD) exhibit mathematical deficiencies consistent with the cognitive deficit theory. However, no research has yet examined and quantified the mathematical deficits in children with MLD. This study aims to synthesize findings on numerical cognition, calculations, fractions/decimals, geometry, and word problems deficits among Chinese children with MLD using a meta-analytic method. A total of 77 studies, including 505 effect sizes, were included. The results indicate that the severity of mathematical deficits among

Consequences, characteristics, and causes of mathematical learning disabilities and persistent low achievement in mathematics.

The goals of the review are threefold: (a) to highlight the educational and employment consequences of poorly developed mathematical competencies; (b) overview the characteristics of children with mathematical learning disability (MLD) and with persistently low achievement (LA) in mathematics; and (c) provide a primer on cognitive science research that is aimed at identifying the cognitive mechanisms underlying these learning disabilities and associated cognitive interventions. Literatures on the educational and economic consequences of poor mathematics achievement were reviewed and integrated

Pre-service teachers' attitudes toward inclusive mathematics education across teacher education programs.

This study examines pre-service teachers' attitudes toward inclusive mathematics education and how these attitudes vary by teacher preparation experience and program type. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was used. In the quantitative component, data were collected from 570 pre-service teachers in preschool, primary school, and elementary mathematics teacher education programs at twelve universities across Türkiye, using the Teacher Attitude Scale Toward Inclusive Mathematics Education. The scale's factorial structure, reliability, and cross-program measurement equivalence were r

Loose parts play encourages spontaneous science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) behaviours.

Children incorporate items found in their environment into their play, transforming everyday objects and materials into an opportunity for exploration. Termed loose parts, these versatile, natural, or manufactured materials (e.g., cardboard, pipes, buttons, sticks) are widely recommended for supporting children's early STEM learning. Limited empirical work has documented children's indoor STEM behaviours with loose parts. Using a within-subjects experimental design, we examined children's early STEM behaviours and engagement (N = 60; 32 females, 28 males; Mage = 58.6 months, SD = 10.9) during

Do Children With Comorbid Reading and Mathematics Difficulties Experience More Internalizing Problems?

We examined whether children with comorbid reading (RD) and mathematics (MD) difficulties experience more internalizing problems (anxiety, depression, somatic complaints, and social withdrawal) than children without comorbidity. In addition, we examined whether any significant group differences are due to differences between groups in attention. Thirty-three Canadian children with RD (51.5% female; Mage = 10.80 years), 35 with MD (60.0% female; Mage = 10.79 years), 37 with comorbid RDMD (45.9% female; Mage = 10.79 years), and 42 chronological-age (CA) controls (64.3% female; Mage = 10.82 years

Innovative decision making tools using discrete mathematics for stress urinary incontinence treatment.

In this study, we applied graph theory to clinical decision-making for Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) treatment. Utilizing discrete mathematics, we developed a system to visually understand the shortest path to the desired treatment outcomes by considering various patient variables. Focusing on women aged 35-50, we examined the effectiveness of Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT) surgery and Vaginal Erbium Laser (VEL) treatment for over 15 years. The TVT group consisted of 102 patients who underwent surgery using either the Advantage Fit mid-urethral sling system (Boston Scientific Co., MA, USA

Beyond Words/Signs: DHH Learners' Spatial Reasoning in Mathematics as Embodied Cognition.

Spatial reasoning is critical across the STEM disciplines. Examining deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children's spatial reasoning in mathematics, particularly geometry, as an embodied phenomenon opens new possibilities for deaf education. The authors inquire into the embodied processes and forms of DHH learners' spatial reasoning, considering how such knowledge can expand access and conceptual opportunities for both DHH and hearing learners. The article focuses on the spatial reasoning of two grade 1 hard of hearing children as they complete a geometric task with a hearing peer in a mainstream

Approximate numerical abilities and mathematics: Insight from correlational and experimental training studies.

Humans have the ability to nonverbally represent the approximate numerosity of sets of objects. The cognitive system that supports this ability, often referred to as the approximate number system (ANS), is present in early infancy and continues to develop in precision over the life span. It has been proposed that the ANS forms a foundation for uniquely human symbolic number and mathematics learning. Recent work has brought two types of evidence to bear on the relationship between the ANS and human mathematics: correlational studies showing individual differences in approximate numerical abilit

Time processing impairments in preschoolers at risk of developing difficulties in mathematics.

The occurrence of time processing problems in individuals with Development Dyscalculia (DD) has favored the view of a general magnitude system devoted to both numerical and temporal information. Yet, this scenario has been partially challenged by studies indicating that time difficulties can be attributed to poor calculation or counting skills, which can support reasoning on time in school-aged children and adults. Here, we tackle this debate by exploring the performance of young children before they fully develop the symbolic number system. Preschoolers at risk of developing DD were compared

Who Is At Risk for Persistent Mathematics Difficulties in the United States?

We analyzed two nationally representative, longitudinal data sets of U.S. children to identify risk factors for persistent mathematics difficulties (PMD). Results indicated that children from low socioeconomic households are at elevated risk of PMD at 48 and 60 months of age, as are children with cognitive delays, identified developmental delays or disabilities, and vocabulary difficulties. In contrast, children attending preschool either in Head Start or non-Head Start classrooms are at initially lower risk of PMD. Kindergarten-aged children experiencing either low socioeconomic status or mat

The Effect of Tutoring With Nonstandard Equations for Students With Mathematics Difficulty.

Students often misinterpret the equal sign (=) as operational instead of relational. Research indicates misinterpretation of the equal sign occurs because students receive relatively little exposure to equations that promote relational understanding of the equal sign. No study, however, has examined effects of nonstandard equations on the equation solving and equal-sign understanding of students with mathematics difficulty (MD). In the present study, second-grade students with MD (n = 51) were randomly assigned to standard equations tutoring, combined tutoring (standard and nonstandard equatio

Five-year growth trajectories of kindergarten children with learning difficulties in mathematics.

The investigators used data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K) to estimate whether and to what extent the timing and persistence of mathematics difficulties (MD) in kindergarten predicted children's first through fifth grade math growth trajectories. Results indicated that children persistently displaying MD (i.e., those experiencing MD in both fall and spring of kindergarten) had the lowest subsequent growth rates, children with MD in spring only had the second-lowest growth rates, and children with MD in the fall only (and who had thus recovered from the

Mathematics education and students with learning disabilities: introduction to the special series.

The prevalence of students with mathematics learning disabilities has triggered an interest among special education researchers and practitioners in developing an understanding of the needs of this group of students, and in identifying effective instructional programming to foster their mathematical performance during the school years and into adulthood. Research into the characteristics of students with mathematics learning disabilities is being approached from different perspectives, including developmental, neurological and neuropsychological, and educational. This diversity helps us develo
