Two cases of initially undiagnosed silent fractures of the medial wall of the maxillary sinus complicated by a delayed osteomyelitis are presented. The presenting feature was periorbital cellulitis. The etiopathogenesis of this process is based on an interference with the sinus ostium function by ingrowth of hypertrophic scar tissue.

Maxillary sinus cysts typically occur as postoperative maxillary cysts arising years after sinonasal surgery. In contrast, trauma-related cysts are uncommon, and cases specifically following zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture repair are exceedingly rare. We report a maxillary sinus cyst that developed 28 years after open reduction and internal fixation of a zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture. At the initial injury, the orbital floor fracture remained untreated, and the posterior maxillary wall was displaced anteriorly. These structures likely contacted each other and formed a bony partitio

The authors first reported a 42-year-old female patient with carotid-cavernous fistula (CCF) that occurred after maxillary fractures. She developed unilateral exophthalmos, bulbar conjunctival hyperemia, and complained of tinnitus after the operation, and was diagnosed as internal CCF through computerized tomography and Digital Substraction Angiography. After the diagnosis, the internal carotid artery was embolized with a coil under general anesthesia. The treatment effect was satisfactory but the vision of the affected side was eventually lost due to the long course of congestion. Although pa

BACKGROUND Pseudoaneurysms of the head and neck region are relatively rare and consequently there are few reports in the literature. The main causes of pseudoaneurysms in the head and neck area are associated with blunt or penetrating injuries in this area or are iatrogenic, originating during surgical procedures. CASE REPORT The authors illustrate a case of a 16-year-old boy who had an accident on a scooter. A maxillary artery hemorrhage occurred after multiple craniofacial trauma including bilateral fracture of the condylar processes and treatment with intravascular embolization. Due to the

Reattachment of a fractured fragment to the remaining tooth is challenging but one of the best treatment protocols in regards to aesthetics, function as well as patients acceptance. If the original tooth fragment is retained following fracture, the natural tooth structures can be reattached using adhesive protocols to ensure reliable strength, durability and aesthetics. This case report will discuss a 13 years old boy with a complicated crown-root fracture of maxillary right central incisor tooth. The procedure used to repair the fracture regarding this case including flap surgery with endodon

A-50-year-old male patient presented with complaint of tenderness on the left malar area after traffic accident. Our first impression on him was zygomatic fracture, we did radiologic work-up and physical examination on him. But, on the computed tomography scan, there was no fracture or discontinuity on his facial bone. The computed tomography scan was revealed a 4-cm long foreign body in left maxillary sinus with a large amount of fluid collection. After thorough history taking from him, we reveal the patient had a history of trauma 30 years back on the left zygomatic area with a chopstick. Th

A 23 year old male patient was submitted to surgical assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME). There were any postoperative complications until the finish of orthodontic expansion process. However, in the 30th postoperative day, patient mentioned pain in upper central incisor. Periapical radiography evidenced a root fracture of central upper right incisor. After endodontic treatment, the fractured apex was removed. After 3 years of follow-up, the patient finished orthodontics, and the damaged tooth was in good aspect. Apical fracture is an unexpected complication of SARME. However, follow-up

This rare case report describes the diagnosis and treatment of an isolated left-sided orbital floor fracture with a complete dislocation of the globe into the maxillary sinus and briefly discusses the indications of surgery and recovery for orbital floor fractures in general. Complete herniation of the globe through an orbital blow-out fracture is uncommon. However, the current case illustrates that such an occurrence should be in the differential diagnosis and should be considered, especially following high speed/impact injuries involving a foreign object. In these rare cases, surgical interv

The blowout fracture injuries are often associated with fractures of the zygomatic complex and other facial structures but can also occur in an isolated fashion. Isolated bilateral blowout fractures are uncommon and constitute a challenge with regard to both assessment and reconstruction. This article describes an uncommon case of isolated bilateral blowout fracture in a patient with extensive pneumatization of the maxillary sinuses.

Horizontal root fractures usually are characterized by a fracture line that is perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth's root. Root fractures are diagnosed through clinical and radiographic examination. Treatment depends on the position of the fracture and the extent of root involvement. Successful treatment depends on correct diagnosis, clinical management, and radiographic follow-up. This article describes the successful treatment (with a 3-year follow-up period) of a permanent maxillary central incisor with horizontal root fracture treated with calcium hydroxide, in which the coronal se

There has been a rise in incidence of dental trauma and crown fractures as reported in the literature. Children and teenagers are the most affected age groups, and the maxillary central incisors are the teeth most often affected. This article discusses reattachment techniques for the restoration of fractured teeth when the tooth fragment is recovered after a traumatic dental injury. This particular case study reports re-reattachment of a previously fractured and reattached tooth fragment.

Zygomatic-maxillary (ZMC) complex fractures are a common consequence of facial trauma. In this retrospective study, we present a novel method of ZMC fracture pattern analysis, utilizing three-dimensional visualization of computed tomography (CT) images to record displacement of the malar eminence in a three-dimensional coordinate plane. The pattern of fracture was then correlated with treatment outcome. Facial CT scans were obtained from 29 patients with unilateral ZMC fractures and 30 subjects without fractures and analyzed. Briefly, displacement of the malar eminence (ME) on the fractured si

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of endodontic access cavity location--labial versus palatal--on the resistance to fracture of maxillary incisors.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Sixty intact human maxillary incisors were selected: 20 pairs of central incisors and 10 pairs of lateral incisors. From each pair, 1 tooth was randomly selected to receive a palatal access cavity; the other tooth of the same pair received a labial access cavity. The teeth were divided into 4 test groups: group 1, central incisors with labial access; group 2, central incisors with palatal access; group 3, lateral incisors with

In a period of 3 years, from 1984 to 1986 in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery, Institute of Stomatology, Medical Academy in Warsaw 442 patients were treated for zygomatico-maxillary fractures, in 101 cases the treatment was conservative, and 341 were treated surgically by various operative methods. The aim of the study was assessment of late effectiveness of the surgical methods used most frequently in zygomatico-maxillary fractures with reposition of skeletal fragments either with one-pronged hook introduced percutaneously or from the side of the lumen of the maxillary sinus. BACKGROUND: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture occurs commonly, and restorations of facial shape and symmetry by 3-dimensional reduction and ridged fixation are important. A severe ZMC fracture is accompanied by fractures to the anterior wall of maxillary sinus; thus, various complications can occur without appropriate restoration by surgery.
METHOD: Of the patients with ZMC fracture from January 2008 to December 2012, 328 patients underwent surgery. Among them, 234 patients with severe fractures to the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus underwent restoration using fibrin glue (Tiss

Literature describes variable rates of diplopia of associated with zygomatic maxillary complex (ZMC) fractures (6% to 40%). The aim of this study was to retrospectively assess the prevalence of diplopia in ZMC fracture patients, the usefulness of the orthoptic evaluation compared with the clinical finger-tracking examination, and to seek possible relations of this symptom with clinical parameters. Data of patients attending the Maxillofacial Surgery Units of the University of Messina and University of Naples "Federico II", between January 2012 and December 2022 were retrieved. Statistical anal

BACKGROUND/AIMS: No studies have characterized the morbidity and mortality of maxillary & malar fractures on a national scale. The aim of this study was to examine the risk factors for mortality in pediatric patients who had sustained maxillary and malar fractures by using a national pediatric hospital inpatient care database.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID). The primary predictor variable was the cause of injury. The primary outcome variable was mortality rate. Additional predictor variables included age, gender, r

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the effects of obturation technique and sealer type on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with simulated traumatic crown fractures under clinically relevant loading conditions.
METHODS: Forty extracted human maxillary central incisors were randomly assigned to either the single-cone technique or warm vertical compaction technique. Each group was further divided according to the sealer used: AH Plus or TotalFill BC. After obturation, the crowns were restored with a short fiber-reinforced composite and a nanohybrid compo

Post-traumatic pseudoaneurysms of internal maxillary artery are rare, but may be life-threatening. When arterial damage leads to pseudoaneurysm formation, delayed intractable epistaxis can occur. We report our experience with the diagnosis and management of a ruptured internal maxillary arterial pseudoaneurysm that was discovered preoperatively in a patient with a zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture. He presented to the emergency room with epistaxis, which ceased shortly, and sinus hemorrhage was observed with a fracture of the posterior maxillary wall. The patient was scheduled for ope
