Spontaneous rupture of hepatic metastasis from small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the maxillary sinus, a rare malignant tumor, has a poor prognosis because of its high incidence of metastasis. Moreover, metastatic cancer-induced hepatic rupture, characterized by hemoperitoneum, is infrequent, although several lines of evidences have reported that a wide variety of other neoplasms can cause this usually fatal manifestation. CASE PRESENTATION: We now present the first case of a 49-year-old man with spontaneous rupture of hepatic metastasis from small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the maxillary sinus and ultimately resulte

Modified T-Shaped Closure of Rostral Maxillary Defects in Dogs Following Rostral Maxillectomy.

Rostral maxillary defects following curative intent surgery for maxillary neoplasms can be difficult to close. This paper describes a modified T-shaped closure following rostral maxillectomy that permits the primary mucosal closure of larger rostral maxillary defects that may not be amenable to standard closure techniques. The technique facilitates decreased incision site tension, results in a more cosmetic closure (decreased concave deformity of the muzzle), maintains normal vestibule size, preserves critical vasculature, and maintains the greatest amount of available tissue for repair of def

Aggressive Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Tumor of the Maxillary Sinus with Extraosseous Oral Mucosal Involvement: A Case Report.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors are benign odontogenic neoplasms whose occurrence in the maxillary sinus is rare. Maxillary tumors tend to be locally aggressive and may rapidly involve the surrounding vital structures. We report a case of a large calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor of the maxilla, involving the maxillary sinus in a 48-year-old woman. The tumor was largely intraosseous. In the canine and first premolar regions, the loss of bone could be palpated but the oral mucosa appeared normal. Histologically, the tumor tissue could be seen in the connective tissue below the or

[Site of origin of paranasal sinus malignancies].

In a group of 124 patients a site of origin of paranasal sinus and nasal cavity malignancies was evaluated on the basis of computed tomography (CT) and on the basis of operative findings. The most common malignant tumor was squamous cell carcinoma (41, 1%) and then cancers of salivary origin (20, 2%). The most common site of origin was the maxillary sinus (53, 2%) and then the nasal cavity (31, 5%). Within the maxillary sinus the most frequent neoplasm was cancer whereas in the nasal cavity melanoma and olfactory neuroblastoma. In three (2, 4%) patients site of tumor origin demonstrated on CT

Ameloblastoma with adenoid features: Case report with cyto-histopathologic correlation and molecular findings.

Ameloblastomas are benign but locally aggressive odontogenic tumors that commonly present as expansile lesions in the tooth-bearing areas. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies of ameloblastomas are rare in clinical practice, and only a handful of case reports and series have described their cytologic features. We present the case of a 70-year-old woman with a large and disfiguring maxillary sinus soft tissue mass sampled via transcutaneous FNA. Aspirate smears were composed of small clusters of cohesive and monotonous basaloid cells. The accompanying cellblock showed similar clusters of basal

Endoscopic management of maxillary sinus inverted papilloma attachment sites to minimize disease recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papillomas (IPs) are benign neoplasms, most commonly arising from the mucosal lining of the maxillary sinus. IPs can have single or multifocal sites of attachment. Although pedicle location is an important factor to consider in surgical planning, it is less clear whether the location or number of IP attachment sites hold any prognostic value. Herein, we aimed to determine the prognostic significance of the number and location of attachment sites of IPs originating from the maxillary sinus when managed by a pure endoscopic approach. METHODS: This was a single-center, singl

Transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy as the initial oncologic approach to sinonasal neoplasms: the anatomic basis.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate an anatomic basis for endoscopic medial maxillectomy with excision of the lateral nasal wall to the nasal floor, including the inferior turbinate, and nasolacrimal duct. Transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy involves complete resection of the lateral nasal wall with boundaries that are inferior to the nasal floor; superior to the cribriform plate and fovea ethmoidalis; anterior to the anterior maxillary wall, including the nasolacrimal duct; and posterior to within 5 mm of the eustachian tube. Transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy provides exposure for endosco

[Submandibulectomy in the treatment of pathology of the submandibular gland: our experience 1970-1995].

Submandibular gland excision is proposed in the treatment of neoplastic and non neoplastic diseases; this surgical procedure can be performed by transoral or transcervical approach. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that cervical approach must be preferred because it is safer and allows a wider exposition of the surgical field. From 1970 to June 1995, 54 patients (47 with chronic sialadenitis, 7 with benign tumors and 7 with malignant tumors) were submitted to excision of the submaxillary gland. Of the 54 resections performed, 2 were completed with "functional" cervical lymphadenectomy an

Basal cell adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary glands involving palate and maxillary sinus.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) is a rare neoplasm accounting for only 2.9% of all salivary gland neoplasms. BCAC involving palatal minor salivary glands are exceedingly rare, and only 10 cases have been reported in the literature. The treatment of choice is surgical excision. Here, we report a case of a 55-year-old male patient with massive BCAC of palatal minor salivary gland extending into the maxillary sinus. This is the first case of BCAC treated by radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. A follow-up check conducted after 14-months showed good prognosis.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. An aggressive neoplasm derived from schneiderian epithelium and distinct from olfactory neuroblastoma.

Eight cases of a highly aggressive undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are described. The patients, who ranged in age from 30-77 years, had multiple sinonasal symptoms, and each had involvement of the nasal cavity, maxillary antrum, and ethmoid sinus. Six tumors extended into the orbital bones, and five penetrated the cranial cavity. Five patients died of disease from 1 to 41 months after diagnosis (median: 4 months), and three are alive with tumor less than 1 year following diagnosis. Microscopically, the neoplasms formed nests, trabeculae, and sheets containi

Prosthetic and surgical management of osteogenic sarcoma of the maxilla.

Maxillary surgical defects resulting from resection of oral neoplasms vary in size from small perforations of the hard and soft palate to complete removal of these structures. Osteogenic sarcoma is of unknown etiology and is a rapidly growing tumor that may produce pain, paresthesia, and anesthesia. The recommended treatment of radical resection often results in defects that produce significant orofacial disfigurement. These defects, regardless of size, present significant functional disability, with compromised esthetics, mastication, and deglutition. Restoration with a maxillary obturator pr

Malignant neoplasms metastatic to gingivae.

Malignant neoplasms metastatic to the gingivae are rare. Our review of the literature revealed only eight acceptable examples. We are reporting two additional cases. One patient was a 58-year-old man with an adenocarcinoma of the lung which metastasized bilaterally to the maxillary gingiva. The second patient was a 27-year-old man with a synovial sarcoma which metastasized to multiple sites in the maxillary and mandibular gingiva. Clinically, gingival metastatic lesions are most often confused with hemangioma, pyogenic granuloma, giant-cell granuloma, and pepripheral fibroma. They usually occu

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours of the maxillary sinus: A brief clinical report and review of the literature.

Although inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) have been accepted as a clonal neoplasm, their pathology is poorly understood due to variable presentation. There is no identifiable cause and they are usually observed as tumour growth combined with inflammation. In the current WHO classification, IMTs are designated as intermediate malignancies. In terms of biological potential, IMTs are classified under 'rarely metastasizing'. IMTs are rare in the maxillary sinus but, when reported, can be locally aggressive or even destructive if they invade the orbit. The authors present a brief clinica

Ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus 11 years after extirpation of extensive dentigerous cysts and dystopic wisdom tooth.

We present the case of a 36-year-old patient with ameloblastoma of the maxillary sinus. The history of the patient was extraordinary with respect to the diagnosis of an extensive odontogenic cyst of this sinus with a maxillary wisdom tooth located far from the region of origin. Both cyst and tooth had been completely extirpated more than 10 years prior to the current tumor diagnosis. Diagnosis of ameloblastoma was based on routinely processed specimen and supported by immunohistochemical markers. Localization and extension of both cyst and neoplasm support the assumption that both entities aro

Secretory Carcinoma with ETV6-NTRK3 Gene Fusion and Lymph Node Metastasis in Maxillary Gingiva: A Case Report with Pathological and Molecular Correlative Studies.

Secretory carcinoma (SC), also known as mammary analogue secretory carcinoma (MASC), is a rare salivary gland neoplasm with distinctive morphology that harbors a diagnostic ETV6 gene rearrangement. MASC was first described as a type of salivary gland neoplasm in 2010 and resembles breast secretory carcinoma. It is often mistaken for other neoplasms. It usually acts as an indolent tumor but can occasionally behave in an aggressive manner. We present a rare case of a patient with an aggressive SC/MASC of maxillary gingivobuccal sulcus with microcystic, solid and papillary patterns that showed ET

Unusual malignant neoplasms occurring around dental implants: A report of 2 cases.

Osseointegrated implants are now commonplace in contemporary dentistry. However, a number of complications can occur around dental implants, including peri-implantitis, maxillary sinusitis, osteomyelitis, and neoplasms. There have been several reports of a malignant neoplasm occurring adjacent to a dental implant. In this report, we describe 2 such cases. One case was that of a 75-year-old man with no previous history of malignant disease who developed a solitary plasmacytoma around a dental implant in the left posterior mandible, and the other was that of a 43-year-old man who was diagnosed w

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the maxillary sinus: A case report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are one of the most complex and rare neoplasms that have been discovered, with varying behavior in different cases. They mostly arise in the thoracic and abdominal cavity, the lungs, retroperitoneum, and extremities. They can also be detected in the head and neck area. IMTs have no age or gender preference which makes them tougher to anticipate. Head and neck IMTs are benign neoplasms with locally aggressive behavior and a low risk of metastatic spread. They have an unknown etiology, and they resemble malignant lesions radiologically. In this case rep

A rare sinonasal neoplasm: fibrosarcoma.

Sinonasal fibrosarcoma is an infrequently occurring malignant neoplasm. It usually presents with nasal obstruction and epistaxis, as do other sarcomas in this region. The final diagnosis is based on the histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination. We report a case involving a 47-year-old woman with a 2-year history of left nasal obstruction and proptosis, as well as diplopia for the 2 months preceding her visit. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a neoplasm occupying the left nasal cavity, ethmoid sinuses, and bilateral frontal sinuses. The neoplasm also was erod

Multiple myeloma of the thyroid cartilage.

A 60-year-old male presented with hoarseness. His past medical history was remarkable for a plasmacytoma of the left maxillary sinus having been resected without systemic evidence of plasma cell myeloma (PCM), also known as multiple myeloma (MM), at the time. This maxillary sinus disease recurred and was treated with radiation. Workup for PCM was conducted. Treatment included melphalan and autologous stem cell transplant. Because of the therapeutic and prognostic implications, a Plasma cell neoplasm (PCN) in a neck mass must be carefully evaluated by clinical and pathological criteria in order
