Pediatric cervical spine injuries (CSI) are uncommon events, but can be devastating injuries. Facial fractures have been associated with injuries to the cervical spine in children, but may be deemed isolated facial fractures and bypass the standard trauma pathway. The objective of this study is to describe the mechanisms, associated injuries and outcomes of pediatric cervical spine injuries in patients with known maxillofacial trauma at a level 1 trauma center. An analysis was performed of all patients under the age of 18 with maxillofacial trauma admissions to a single level 1 trauma center,

BACKGROUND: Patients sustaining maxillofacial fractures are at risk for associated injuries (AIs) to other body regions. The incidence of AIs is reported to be from 20 to 35%. AIs may be life-threatening and play a key role in considering first-line management at the emergency department, as well as planning the definitive treatment of maxillofacial fractures.
PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the frequency and risk factors for AIs in patients with maxillofacial fractures.
STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: The investigators designed and implemented a retrospective cohort study of patients w

Our study compares the number of postoperative complications of Syrian patients admitted to the Galilee Medical Center (GMC) over a 5-year period (May 2013-May 2018) for treatment after initial high-velocity maxillofacial injuries sustained during the Syrian civil war. Specifically, we evaluated complication rates of patients arriving "early," within 24 h, to the GMC versus those who arrived "late," or 14-28 days following high-velocity maxillofacial injuries. Both groups of patients received definitive surgical treatment within 48 h of admission to our hospital with a total of 60 patients inc

PURPOSE: Given the increasing use of bicycles for local transportation and recreation, the purpose of the present study was to measure the effects of bicycle helmets on the frequency and severity of maxillofacial injuries. The specific aims were to measure and compare the frequencies and severity of maxillofacial injuries between injured bicyclists who had or had not worn helmets.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We implemented a retrospective cohort study and enrolled a sample of bicyclists who had been injured from January 4, 2012 to March 31, 2018 and had presented to Harborview Medical Center for e

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The association of traumatic head injury (THI) with maxillofacial fractures (MFF) is a major health concern worldwide. In spite of the close anatomical proximity of maxillofacial bones to the cranium, the association of THI with MFF is controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the association between THI and MFF. Other factors associated with THI in patients with MFF were also investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital-based retrospective study was conducted at the OMFS Unit, Hospital USM, Kelantan, Malaysia. From 12 June 2013 to 31 December 2015, 473 patient re

The aim of this retrospective study was to clarify the occurrence and types of dental injuries in 389 patients who had been diagnosed with facial fractures, and to analyze whether the occurrence of dental injury correlates to gender, age, trauma mechanism and type of facial fracture. Dental injuries were observed in 62 patients (16%). The most common type of injury was a crown fracture (48%). Dental injuries were multiple in most patients (63%). Almost half (48%) of all injured teeth were severely injured. Most injured teeth (61%) were in the maxilla. The incisor region was the most prevalent

BACKGROUND: Airway establishment and hemorrhage control may be difficult to achieve in patients with massive oronasal bleeding from maxillofacial injuries. This study was formulated to develop effective algorithms for managing these challenging injuries.
METHODS: Trauma registries from nine trauma centers were queried over a 7-year period for injuries with abbreviated injury scale face >/= 3 and transfusion of >/=3 units of blood within 24 hours. Patients in whom no significant bleeding was attributed to maxillofacial trauma were excluded. Patient demographics, injury severity measures, airwa

Maxillofacial injuries are fairly common and they are usually found in association with multiple injuries. The proximity of the face to the craniospinal axis results in significant association between maxillofacial trauma and craniospinal injuries. Previous studies have enumerated this association but the injury types, classifications and influences of the concomitant injuries on the outcome of management are sketchy. In this study, road traffic accident was the commonest cause of maxillofacial and concomitant c raniospinal injuries: mild closed head injuries was the commonest concomitant inju

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the contribution of ingested lead particles to elevated blood lead concentrations in victims of gunshot injury to the maxillofacial region.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: As part of a larger study of the effects of retained lead bullets on blood lead, a retrospective review of study findings was completed on 5 of 8 patients who sustained injuries to the maxillofacial region. These 5 patients were recruited into the larger study within 11 days of injury and showed a penetration path for the projectile that engaged the upper aerodigestive tract. All sub

BACKGROUND: Airway management of the maxillofacial gunshot injury constitutes a critical decision and an area that requires review in the context of civilian injuries. Most of our knowledge is extrapolated from military experience, which constitutes a different trauma patient group. This paper reports a retrospective survey of airway status in relation to maxillofacial gunshot injuries. The objective is to correlate clinical findings with treatment decisions.
METHODS: A survey was done of 11,622 archived maxillofacial surgery records (1987-1992) in the three academic hospitals in Johannesburg

Maxillofacial injuries are common sequelae in road traffic accidents. For the restrained driver, impact against the steering wheel is the most prevalent cause of injury. A sample of drivers restrained by seat belts with facial injury caused by the steering wheel was taken from data at the Accident Research Unit, University of Birmingham, UK. Two hundred and forty facial injuries occurred in 135 drivers, and these are described. Superficial contusion, laceration and nasal fractures predominated. There were 504 injuries at other body regions, and these were often caused by other vehicle componen

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the structure of maxillofacial trauma associated with brain injury in Stavropol to elaborate the diagnostic approach. We analyzed 2,604 case records of patients with maxillofacial trauma in the Stavropol region in the period from 2008 to 2012. Only 345 (13.2%) cases were diagnosed with maxillofacial trauma associated with mild brain injury. The analysis of case records showed that the incidence of brain damage depends on the location and type of fracture of the facial bones. It is noted that emotional and stress factors often mask neurological symptoms

Undiagnosed cervical spine injury can have devastating results. The aim of this study was to analyse patients with primary maxillofacial trauma and a concomitant cervical spine injury. It is hypothetised that cervical spine injury is predictable in maxillofacial surgery. A monocentric clinical study was conducted over a 10-year period to analyse patients with primary maxillofacial and associated cervical spine injuries. Demographic data, mechanism of injury, specific trauma and treatments provided were reviewed. Additionally a search of relevant international literature was conducted in PubMed

OBJECTIVE: Isolated facial injuries are less common among pediatric trauma patients. The literature has focused on, especially, fractures in facial injuries. There is a limited number of studies evaluating all facial injuries in childhood. The study aims to evaluate the clinical characteristics of maxillofacial injuries and to identify patients who require further intervention.
METHODS: The data from pediatric patients with maxillofacial injury (<18 years) between January 2011 and December 2015 were collected. Demographic characteristics, trauma mechanisms, concomitant injuries, treatments, h

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) associated with maxillofacial fractures (MFFs) are a public health concern worldwide, especially among adult-aged males. There is an urgent need for early detection of associated TBIs in patients with MFFs during the initial assessment and treatment stage to reduce morbidity and mortality. The objective of the present study was to systematically review the literature to determine specific MFF situations associated with TBIs and to identify the factors associated with TBIs in patients with MFFs. The protocol was developed in accord with the Preferred Reporting It
