We report a case of a 26 year old man who was diagnosticated of ALS. This case is a graphic example of the pulmonary function evolution through the flow-volume loop. In the first study the espirometric values were in the normal range. The Static pulmonary pressures were weackle decreased. This was the only sign of respiratory muscle impairement. Its important to study close enough the pulmonary function through the flow/volume loop, maximal respiratory pressures and maximal voluntary Ventilation in order to know the empairment rate, and also to detect intercurrent procedures as bulbar involvem

The major cause of exercise-induced asthma (EIA) is thought to be the drying and cooling of the airways during the 'conditioning' of the inspired air. Nasal breathing increases the respiratory system's ability to warm and humidity the inspired air compared to oral breathing and reduces the drying and cooling effects of the increased ventilation during exercise. This will reduce the severity of EIA provoked by a given intensity and duration of exercise. The purpose of the study was to determine the exercise intensity (%VO2 max) at which healthy subjects, free from respiratory disease, could per

BACKGROUND: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been recognized for its effectiveness in enhancing cardiorespiratory fitness. However, the application of HIIT within boxing training remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the physiological adaptations induced by a structured 4-week HIIT-boxing regimen, with a specific focus on pulmonary function (PF), aerobic capacity, and autonomic cardiovascular regulation, assessed by heart rate recovery (HRR).
METHODS: Sixteen trained young individuals were randomly assigned to either the HIIT-boxing group or the control group. Comp

BACKGROUND: The respiratory movements are one of the factors influencing standing balance. Although well-trained athletes have better postural performance compared to untrained men, it's not quite clear, if the formers' upright posture would be more stable during different ventilation modes, maximal voluntary hyperventilation and inspiratory breath-holding. There are no studies on this subject in the available literature.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate an influence of maximal inspiratory breath-holding and maximal voluntary hyperventilation on the standing balance of ath

The cause of the reduced lung volume in the 'shrinking lung' syndrome of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was investigated in 12 patients with the condition. Nine patients described persistent episodes of pleuritic chest pain. Narrow section (3 mm) computed tomography of the thorax revealed no interstitial fibrosis or significant pleural disease. Assessment of diaphragmatic function using manoeuvres more reliable than the maximal occluded efforts previously used alone to assess respiratory muscle strength, showed that diaphragm strength was unequivocally normal in nine of 12 patients. Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) has been suggested as improving respiratory mechanics in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We hypothesized that LVRS might lengthen the diaphragm, increase its area of apposition with the chest wall, and thereby improve its mechanical function. To determine the effect of bilateral LVRS on diaphragm length, we measured diaphragm length at TLC, using plain chest roentgenograms (CXRs), in 25 patients (11 males and 14 females) before LVRS and 3 to 6 mo after LVRS. A subgroup of seven patients (reference data) also had diaphragm

A 17-year-old man, who had received a diagnosis of congenital myopathy, was scheduled for superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery anastomosis procedure. Preoperative respiratory examinations showed the breathing capacity of 450 ml because of a scoilosis, deformity of a thorax and severe muscular atrophy. Anesthesia was maintained with propofol, fentanyl, remifentanil and vecuronium to avoid malignant hyperthermia (MH). Endotracheal intubation was performed with a gum elastic bougie for difficult airway management (DAM). After intubation, we checked the positioning of the tracheal

Few studies have described physiological and cardiac rhythm responses to maximal voluntary breath-holding in elite freedivers. This case study presents minute ventilation, PETO2, PETCO2, involuntary breathing movements (IBMs; surface electromyography), SpO2, muscle and cerebral oxygenation (near-infrared spectroscopy), and cardiac rhythm changes (electrocardiogram) before, during, and after a maximal dry static voluntary breath-hold in a world champion freediver. Glossopharyngeal insufflation prior to the breath-hold increased forced vital capacity from 6.92 L (138% predicted) to 9.04 L (180%

We studied 12 children with pectus excavatum (mean age, 13.8 years) using pulmonary function and exercise testing. Eight patients had surgical repair and were studied before and after repair. Four patients did not have repair and were tested twice. The degree of chest wall deformity in the two groups was similar. All patients reached 86% or more of their maximal predicted heart rate with exercise. Total lung capacity decreased 8% (p less than 0.01) after operation. In the nonoperated control group, total lung capacity was similar during both studies. The ratio of ventilation at maximal exercis

Generalized muscle weakness culminating in ventilatory failure developed in a 59-year-old man with kappa light chain multiple myeloma. Physical examination demonstrated skeletal muscle enlargement, severe proximal muscle weakness, and macroglossia, consistent with amyloid-associated muscle pseudohypertrophy. Pulmonary function studies revealed a severe restrictive abnormality with a low maximal inspiratory pressure and maximal voluntary ventilation. Arterial blood gas values and chest radiographic results were normal. There was no clinical evidence of cardiac or central nervous system disease.

Effects of voluntary hyperventilation (2 h, 70-80% of maximal lung ventilation) on external breathing, gas exchange and blood circulation were studied in 12 healthy male volunteers. Hyperventilation was shown to change structure of the respiratory cycle as variation and expiration time were decreased. Indices of the external breathing did not reduce but, on the contrary, there was a significant increase in the alveolar ventilation and a reduction in the dead space ventilation. Considerable losses of carbon dioxide with the expired air were noted only during initial 10-15 min of intensive breat

Respiratory Muscle Endurance (RME) is an alternative way to assess respiratory muscle impairment but normal values are lacking to use this test in a clinical perspective. Our objective was then to determine reference values of RME in healthy subjects. We recruited 161 healthy subjects (25-80 years old) who were distributed within 5 groups with a 10-year range. We measured vital capacity (VC) and maximal respiratory pressure (MIP, MEP). The RME test consisted of isocapnic hyperpnea at increasing levels of ventilation until exhaustion to determine Tlim (expressed in minutes and as percentage of

Previous work has suggested that diaphragm EMGs recorded from the lower thoracic wall yield spuriously low centroid frequencies (Fc). For this reason we compared EMGs recorded from two anterolateral thoracic wall locations with EMGs recorded simultaneously from a bipolar esophageal electrode in 11 stable quadriplegic patients. Their maximal inspiratory pressures (Pdimax) ranged from 31 to 85, averaging 55 cm H2O. Quadriplegic patients were selected to exclude EMG contamination of surface recordings by intercostal muscle activity. Recordings were made during resting breathing, voluntary hyperve

Sixty-eight subjects, consecutively admitted to our rehabilitation hospital with a presumptive postpolio syndrome, were examined by pulmonary function and symptom-limited exercise stress testing. The purpose of this investigation was to study how many of these subjects could be classified as suffering from cardiorespiratory deconditioning. The subjects had moderately reduced lung function of restrictive type, and none of the subjects had forced expiratory volume for one second (FEV1) below 30% of predicted value, indicating that hypoventilation would probably not occur. A pronounced reduction

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the airway volume changes associated with rapid maxillary expansion (RME) protocols using different activation rates. A sample of forty RME treated cases was classified into two groups according to the rate of RME activation (Group A: 0.8mm per day and Group B: 0.5mm per day). Three-dimensional images were obtained for each case before and three months after expansion. Dolphin imaging software was used to identify landmarks and calculate airway volumes. Intraclass correlation coefficient was used to confirm reliability and Wilcoxon signed rank tests we

INTRODUCTION: In elderly seniors (>80 years), respiratory function may be compromised when, in addition to the presence of comorbidity and loss of mobility, there is also reduced respiratory muscle (RM) strength. The literature has shown that RM training could be an effective method to improve RM function and prevent clinical deterioration, particularly in population with RM weakness. The main purpose of this paper was to assess the effectiveness of RM training on the respiratory muscle strength and endurance of institutionalized elderly women with functional impairment.
