Top-down mechanisms in dysphonia perception: the need for blind tests.

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which the information a therapist or a physician has about a dysphonic speaker, particularly whether he or she is in the pretreatment or posttreatment period, can influence judgments of the patient's voice. The voices of 53 dysphonic speakers were used in the study. For each speaker, we selected a pair of voice samples recorded under different circumstances. Seven listeners who were speech therapists, ear, nose, and throat surgeons, or voice pathologists took blind-listening tests in which they were asked to compare the two voices in eac

Mechanical testing of a modified stabilisation method for tibial tuberosity advancement.

OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study evaluated three modified techniques of tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA). Loads to failure were calculated for each technique. METHODS: A 9 mm TTA procedure was performed in the tibiae of dogs weighing between 32 and 38 kg. In group 1 (n = 12), the distal part of the tibial crest was left attached to the tibia by the cranial cortex, and a figure-of-eight wire was added for stabilisation. In group 2 (n = 12), the tibial crest was left attached but no additional device was used for stabilisation. In group 3 (n = 12), the tibial crest was completely separated fr

The defense mechanism test-separation theme in two anxiety disorders.

Two groups of 26 age- and sex-matched outpatients, with DSM-IV diagnoses of obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder with agoraphobia, were compared on the Defense Mechanism Test-Separation Theme. A stimulus portraying a mother figure who is leaving a room where a baby lies alone on the floor was presented 22 times at increasing exposure durations in a single-view tachistoscope. Participants were asked to describe what they perceived at each step, according to the method of the Defense Mechanism Test. As predicted, reports of the mother seen as an inanimate object (phobic repression) w

Role of lung function testing in the management of mechanically ventilated infants.

The mechanical characteristics of the ventilated lung can only be interpreted when the volume of the lung, the elastic properties, and the degree of airway obstruction have been accurately quantified by pulmonary function testing. More gentle ventilation strategies (permissive hypercapnia) are used, and the efficacy of mechanical ventilation can be verified in the intensive care unit. Pulmonary function testing brings new insights, awareness, and applications, but its limitations need to be taken into account when interpreting the acquired data.

Test-retest reliability of quantitative sensory testing for mechanical somatosensory and pain modulation assessment of masticatory structures.

Assessing the reliability of medical measurements is a crucial step towards the elaboration of an applicable clinical instrument. There are few studies that evaluate the reliability of somatosensory assessment and pain modulation of masticatory structures. This study estimated the test-retest reliability, that is over time, of the mechanical somatosensory assessment of anterior temporalis, masseter and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the conditioned pain modulation (CPM) using the anterior temporalis as the test site. Twenty healthy women were evaluated in two sessions (1 week apart) by the

Development and testing of a new self-locking intramedullary nail system: testing of handling aspects and mechanical properties.

A distal interlocking system has been developed which is easy to use, carries out an aligning effect on the distal fracture fragment, reduces the exposure to radiation for the surgeon and the patient, and allows for a decrease in operating time. The goal of this study was to develop and test the handling and mechanical properties of two prototype nails in comparison to a conventional interlocking nail concept (Unreamed Femoral Nail system). It was shown that the prototype designs represent an improvement over this system. Both designs were easy to use. The prototype with the asymmetrically off

Spasm Provocation Tests under Medication May Help Decide on Medical or Mechanical Therapy in Patients with Aborted Sudden Cardiac Death due to Coronary Spasm.

Objective The decision to perform medical or mechanical therapy in patients with aborted sudden cardiac death (ASCD) due to coronary spasm is controversial. The Japanese Circulation Society guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with coronary spastic angina mentioned that implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is one option in patients with ASCD due to coronary spasm. We investigated the usefulness of spasm provocation tests under medications in five patients with ASCD due to coronary spasm. Methods We performed the spasm provocation tests under medications in five ASCD p

Lack of correlation between the responses to tilt testing and adenosine triphosphate test and the mechanism of spontaneous neurally mediated syncope.

AIMS: We prospectively correlated the results of tilt testing (TT) and adenosine triphosphate test (ATP) with the findings observed during a spontaneous syncopal relapse by means of an implantable loop recorder (ILR) in patients with a clinical diagnosis of neurally mediated syncope. METHODS AND RESULTS: We included patients with three or more clinically severe syncopal episodes in the last 2 years without significant electrocardiographic and cardiac abnormalities. Patients with orthostatic hypotension and carotid sinus syncope were excluded. After ILR implantation, patients were followed unt

The Influence of Sample Microfabrication and Annealing on the Mechanical Strain-Stress Behavior of Stainless Steels and Corrosion Resistant Aluminum Alloys in Micro-Tensile Tests.

Miniaturized components for enhanced integrated functionality or thin sheets for lightweight applications often consist of face-centered cubic metals. They exhibit good strength, corrosion resistance, formability and recyclability. Microfabrication technologies, however, may introduce cold work or detrimental heat-induced lattice defects into the material, with consequences for the mechanical properties. Austenitic stainless steels (1.4310, 1.4301) and aluminum alloys (EN AW-5005-H24, EN AW-6082-T6) were selected for this study. The influence of pulsed fiber laser cutting, microwaterjet cuttin

Validation of the Acute Lower Limb Activation Mechanism Test: A Reliable Bedside Diagnostic Tool for Extensor Mechanism Ruptures.

Modern clinical practice has become increasingly reliant on imaging modalities to diagnose the extent of soft tissue injuries. We describe and then validate a novel bedside clinical test, the acute lower limb activation mechanism test (ALAM), that can be used to identify an extensor mechanism rupture in those unable to straight leg raise (SLR). Patients who presented with an acute knee injury and were unable to SLR were identified over a 6-year period. Patients meeting the inclusion criteria were examined utilizing the ALAM test and diagnosis subsequently confirmed with ultrasound, magnetic re

Rate-dependent mechanical behavior of human femoropopliteal arteries in biaxial testing.

INTRODUCTION: Arteries, like other soft tissues, exhibit viscoelastic mechanical behavior, meaning their response to stress and strain is time dependent. Loading-rate dependency, i.e., a change in stiffness with the speed of loading, is one aspect of this viscoelasticity. This study investigates the loading-rate dependent stiffening of human femoropopliteal arteries (FPAs) under load-controlled biaxial testing. METHODS: Human FPA specimens were collected from 14 donors, including 7 males and 7 females, aged 45-55 years. A 10 × 10 mm segment was isolated, mounted onto a biaxial testing device,

Centrifuge shaking table test studies on mechanically biologically treated waste.

The dynamic properties of mechanically biologically treatment (MBT) waste are vital for the seismic design of landfills. This study employs a centrifuge shaking table to experimentally investigate the behaviour of MBT waste using sinusoidal and Taft waves. The results reveal the following key findings: (1) MBT waste exhibits a certain degree of dilatancy under low confining pressure. (2) The natural frequency range of MBT waste is determined to be 1-7 Hz, with pronounced resonance effects observed at frequencies of 1.506, 2.97, 4.028 and 6.226 Hz. (3) The dynamic amplification factor decreases

Impact Testing System for an Anthropomorphic Craniocerebral Model with Enhanced Mechanical Fidelity.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide, yet direct observation of the internal mechanical response of the human head under impact is severely constrained by the lack of high-fidelity craniocerebral models and suitable testing platforms. To bridge this gap, we developed an impact testing system featuring an anthropomorphic craniocerebral model with enhanced mechanical fidelity relative to earlier simplified head models. This system integrates a transparent anthropomorphic skull, a mechanically biomimetic brain phantom with highly realistic mec

Visual mismatch negativity in Parkinson's psychosis and potential for testing treatment mechanisms.

Psychosis and visual hallucinations are a prevalent non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease, negatively affecting patients' quality of life and constituting a greater risk for dementia. Understanding neural mechanisms associated to these symptoms is instrumental for treatment development. The mismatch negativity is an event-related potential evoked by a violation in a sequence of sensory events. It is widely considered an index of sensory change-detection. Reduced mismatch negativity response is one of the most replicated results in schizophrenia and has been suggested to be a superior psycho

A review of the experimental methods and results of testing the mechanical properties of Tunica Albuginea.

The present work provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the mechanical properties and existing human tunica albuginea tissue testing methods. Assessments were completed on papers reporting experimental values of Young's modulus, tensile strength, puncture strength, stiffness, toughness, and strain at the ultimate tensile strength (UTS). A high degree of variability in the reported experimental values was found; Young's modulus ranged from 5 MPa to 118 MPa, and tensile strength went from 1.1 MPa to 6.1 MPa. A comparison of the variability of the reported experimental values for pu

Impact testing as a new approach to determine mechanical strength of pharmaceutical tablets.

One of the most common standardised testing of tablet strength in the pharmaceutical industry is the tablet breaking force, which records data related to diametrical compression. This method does not account for a rapid transfer of energy such as free-falling tablets hitting a solid surface, which occurs throughout manufacture, packaging and shipping. Accordingly, the test shows poor correlation with tablet defect rate. Impact fracture force was identified as a test to measure the force absorbed by the material before fracturing when applying impact energy (dynamic stress). The testing methodo

Mechanical testing of frontal plane adaptability of commercially available prosthetic feet.

INTRODUCTION: Prosthetic feet have limited adaptability in the frontal plane. Research shows walking on uneven terrain is difficult for many prosthesis users. A new prosthetic foot, the META Arc, was designed with a polycentric ankle joint that allows relatively free movement in the frontal plane to address this limitation. Previous simulations of the polycentric ankle mechanism found potential benefits such as reduced lateral movement of a proximal mass during forward progress and reduced forces being transferred upward from the ground through the foot. METHODS: Standard mechanical testing p
