The effects of medetomidine and xylazine on gastrointestinal motility and gastrin release in the dog.

The effect of medetomidine, a potent and highly selective alpha2-adrenoceptor agonist, on the motility of the gastric antrum, duodenum, mid-jejunum and ileum was investigated in ten dogs. Its effect on the release of gastrin was also determined. Administration of medetomidine intramuscularly (i.m.) at a dose of 40 microg/kg inhibited the motility of the gastric antrum, duodenum, mid-jejunum and ileum significantly, in comparison to administration of xylazine intramuscularly at a dose of 2.0 mg/kg. The release of gastrin was also significantly decreased in dogs receiving medetomidine. It was fo

Antagonism of medetomidine-induced ataxia in rats by yohimbine, aminophylline and caffeine.

The actions of the alpha 2-antagonist yohimbine and methylxanthines aminophylline and caffeine were evaluated in reversing ataxia, increase in landing foot splay (LFS), produced by the alpha 2-agonist medetomidine in male rats. Medetomidine at 0.1 and 0.15 mg/kg, i.p. increased LFS by 42.9 and 69.6%, respectively. The peripherally acting alpha 2-agonist ST91 (0.125 to 0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) did not significantly affect the LFS. Intraperitoneal injection of yohimbine at 0.5 and 1 mg/kg, aminophylline at 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg, and caffeine at 25 and 50 mg/kg significantly antagonized medetomidine (0.15

An evaluation of medetomidine/ketamine and other drug combinations for anaesthesia in cats.

The anaesthesia induced by cyclohexylamine derivatives in cats was studied by comparing the effects induced by four pairs of agents: acepromazine/ketamine, xylazine/ketamine, zolazepam/tiletamine and medetomidine/ketamine. Acepromazine/ketamine was free of undesirable side effects but provided inadequate anaesthetic cover. The other combinations differed only in the dosage, the quality of the anaesthesia and the importance of the side effects. Medetomidine/ketamine was the best combination; it induced a good degree of anaesthesia with small doses and was free of major side effects.

Chemical Immobilization of Red Serows (Capricornis rubidus) with Ketamine and Medetomidine.

The red serow (Capricornis rubidus) is a solitary, cryptic, forest-dwelling goat-antelope species from Asia, with very limited veterinary and health information. We report on the chemical immobilization of three red serows by using medetomidine (0.03 mg/kg) and ketamine (3 mg/kg). This combination may be useful for chemical capture and field anaesthesia of these animals.

The Shifting Landscape of a Fentanyl Adulterant: Moving From Xylazine to Medetomidine.

Medetomidine has been increasingly found in the illegal opioid supply across the country over the last few years. In 2024, it replaced xylazine as the most common adulterant of the illegal opioid supply in the Philadelphia area. Medetomidine is estimated to be over 100 times as potent and selective for the alpha-2 receptor than xylazine. This leads to increased sedative effects compared with other alpha-2 agonists and in some patients, a severe autonomic withdrawal syndrome when medetomidine is abruptly stopped. Severe hypertension, tachycardia, vomiting, and tremors have been seen, often requ

Recent advances in the identification and quantification of xylazine and medetomidine in biological specimens.

Xylazine is a veterinary sedative that is frequently detected in the illicit drug supply, often found mixed with illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF). It has been detected in the blood of overdose victims and patients who use illicit drugs. Xylazine is not approved for use in humans. It is an alpha-2-adrenergic receptor agonist that causes deep sedation that is non-responsive to naloxone, the antidote for opioid overdose. Chronic exposure to xylazine has been linked to severe wounds that can progress to amputation. Medetomidine is another related veterinary sedative that has more recently eme

Immobilization of American Beaver (Castor canadensis) with Nalbuphine, Medetomidine, and Azaperone.

Thirty-two American beavers (Castor canadensis) were immobilized with a mixture of nalbuphine, medetomidine, and azaperone (NalMedA) for tail transmitter placement and health assessments prior to translocation. Inductions and reversals were very smooth, but regardless of the dose administered, which ranged from 0.02 to 0.06 mL/kg, many beavers reacted to mild stimuli such as being lifted out of the cage, drawing blood from the tail, expressing anal glands for sex determination, and turning on isoflurane to deepen anesthesia before placement of tail transmitters. On a scale from 1 to 5, a sedat

Butorphanol-Azaperone-Medetomidine for the Immobilization of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Maximizing animal wellbeing by minimizing drug-related side effects is a key consideration when choosing pharmaceutical agents for chemical restraint in nonhuman primates. One drug combination that may promote this ideology is butorphanol (27.3 mg/mL), azaperone (9.1 mg/mL), and medetomidine (10.9 mg/mL; BAM). Based on results from a pilot study, 2 doses of BAM (16 and 24 μL/kg IM) were compared in healthy, 3-y-old rhesus macaques. Physiologic parameters and anesthetic quality were assessed and recorded every 5 min. Experimental endpoints were established for hypoxemia (85% or less peripheral
