Child Neglect in the Legal System: A 50-Year Review of Israeli Court Rulings.

Child neglect is the most prevalent form of child maltreatment reported to child protection services in many countries, yet research in this area remains underdeveloped. This study examined how Israeli courts define and interpret child neglect in practice, addressing the significant gap between theoretical definitions and legal operationalization. A systematic analysis of 68 Israeli court judgments spanning 50 years was conducted using thematic analysis. Cases were selected from "Nevo," a legal database, based on specific criteria involving allegations or substantiation of child neglect, with

A medical research agenda for child maltreatment: negotiating the next steps.

Child maltreatment remains a significant pediatric health problem despite 25 years since the establishment of the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect. Federal funding for research on the medical aspects of abuse and neglect has been inadequate and, over time, declining in adjusted dollars. Nevertheless, important research has been conducted without federal support. Landmark research has occurred in the areas of physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Some of these accomplishments are noted, and a research agenda for future work is suggested.

Child Abuse and Neglect Risk in Times of Crisis.

Child abuse and neglect impacts millions of children each year, and the many detrimental impacts on health, well-being, and the economy persist across the lifespan and intergenerationally. Risk and protective factors make child abuse and neglect more or less likely, but during humanitarian crises like economic downturns and health crises, the context and conditions are ripe for increased risk of perpetration and victimization. Prevention is possible when we take a public health approach, and every sector assures the conditions that bolster families, like concrete and economic supports, access

Severe self-neglect: an epidemiological and historical perspective.

Older adults with severe self-neglect have multiple deficits in various social, functional and physical domains, and often live insqualor. These individuals often present with poor personal hygiene, domestic squalor and hoarding which results in a threat to their own health as well as personal and public safety. Severe self-neglect occurs along a continuum with older adults often having cognitive and affective disorders compared with younger individuals presenting with psychiatric illnesses. In cases of severe self-neglect with hoarding, evidence has shown this behavior occurs in diverse socia

Development of a Conceptual Framework for Severe Self-Neglect (SN) by Modifying the CREST Model for Self-Neglect.

Self-neglect is an inability or refusal to meet one's own basic needs as accepted by societal norms and is the most common report received by state agencies charged with investigating abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable adults. Self-neglect is often seen in addition to one or multiple conditions of frailty, mild to severe dementia, poor sleep and depression. While awareness of elder self-neglect as a public health condition and intervention has significantly risen in the past decade as evidenced by the increasing amount of literature available, research on self-neglect still lacks co

Neglect-like symptoms in complex regional pain syndrome: results of a self-administered survey.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), recently reclassified as a complex regional pain syndrome, type I (CRPS-I), is best known for its disabling sensory symptoms, including pain, allodynia, and abnormal skin temperature. Yet, motor dysfunction is common in CRPS and can result in major disability. In addition to weakness of the involved limb, CRPS patients may develop symptoms akin to a neurological neglect-like syndrome, whereby the limb may feel foreign ("cognitive neglect") and directed mental and visual attention is needed to move the limb ("motor neglect"). Members of the patient support gr

Aspects of abuse: recognizing and responding to child maltreatment.

Child maltreatment is a public health problem and toxic stress impacting at least 1 in 8 children by the age of 18 years. Maltreatment can take the form of physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional maltreatment. While some children may experience only one form of maltreatment, others may survive multiple forms, and in some cases particularly complex forms of maltreatment such as torture and medical child abuse. When considering maltreatment, providers should be adept at obtaining a thorough history not only from the parent but when appropriate also from the patient. The most common for
