Increased disparities in income and health care expenditure across EU countries may lead to an increase in patient mobility, which may, in turn, call for more action by the EU and its Member States. At present, patient mobility (or cross-border healthcare) is still a marginal phenomenon but is deemed to increase in the future. In this paper we examine border region patient mobility, defined as patients receiving care in a neighbouring country within a certain proximity. We examine, with the use of a spatial competition model, the options used to regulate such a patient flow and their welfare i

BACKGROUND: Chemoprophylaxis and anti-mosquito measures are key to preventing malaria in travelers. Long-term travelers are at higher risk than short-term travelers, but their adherence to preventive measures is lower. Our aim was to determine malaria exposure risks and predictors for adherence to malaria-preventive measures in long-term travelers.
METHODS: Long-term travelers (>12 weeks) completed a weekly questionnaire about preventive measures, symptoms, and malaria treatment abroad. Blood samples were tested for seroconversion to Plasmodium falciparum anti-circumsporozoite (PfCSP) antibod

BACKGROUND: The study was an analysis of patients managed by plastic surgery services at Heatherwood and Wexham Park hospitals during the calendar year 2022 for complications following cosmetic surgeries performed both internationally and within the United Kingdom.
METHODS: Patients were identified via local databases and encounters and management confirmed with retrospective studies of patient electronic medical records.
RESULTS: 23 patients were managed during the year 2022 for complications post cosmetic surgery. 91% (n = 21) of complications were related to breast cosmetic surgery and/or

BACKGROUND: Unproven stem cell treatments may involve serious health, personal, and financial considerations. Due to worldwide spread, illegal stem cell therapies have become a major public health problem. We have already witnessed numerous reports in the mass media of severe and occasionally even fatal outcomes after such therapies. However, there are only few scientifically documented cases in which the causality between stem cell therapy and side effects cannot be refuted.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case report of a 48-year-old patient with serious side effects, including dissemi

Legislation of ethical issues illustrates the uneasy mix of ethics and politics. Although the majority has the political right to express its moral views in the law, a number of important ethical values like autonomy, tolerance and respect for other people's opinions urge the majority to take the minorities' position into account. Ignoring pluralism in society will inevitably lead to reproductive tourism. Although European legislation and harmonization in the domain of medically assisted reproduction is presented as a partial solution to this phenomenon, it is argued that European legislation

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Gastric outlet obstruction can be a dangerous complication of intragastric balloons, as it can result in severe metabolic alkalosis. As weight loss procedures and medical tourism become more popular, physicians should have a high index of suspicion for complications of invasive procedures, particularly in returning travelers.
ABSTRACT: Intragastric balloons for weight loss have decreased in frequency in the United States. However, they are still frequent in low- and middle-income countries. Severe complications occur in less than 3% of patients who undergo this procedure

Emergencies among adult travelers are numerous and clearly outside the scope of usual pre-travel consultations (vaccinations, infectious and/or tropical disease prophylaxis). No prospective studies have addressed this issue, and rare retrospective studies report trauma in 40 % of cases and non-transmissible medical emergencies in 60 % of cases. In-flight emergencies, traffic accidents, as well as environmental (altitude, carbon monoxide) and behavioral (selfies, alcohol consumption, medical tourism) injuries warrant attention. Finally, at-risk travelers should receive special counseling and be

Some Australian women who require donor oocytes to achieve parenthood travel to South Africa, where egg donors are more readily available and egg donation comparatively affordable. In South Africa, egg donation arranged through donor agencies or egg banks is anonymous, whereas Australian las does not permit donor anonymity. This study explored Australian recipients' views on the implications of donor anonymity for their children, including the potential for future donor identification through direct-to-consumer genetic testing and social media. It also examined whether South African infertilit

Cross-boundary healthcare travel has become increasingly important owing to accelerated population mobility and booming international healthcare markets. While prior research has examined why patients seek healthcare abroad, less is known about how their access is enabled and challenged in practice. To fill this gap, this paper introduces an infrastructural approach, which accounts for the interactions among various infrastructural actors and their power dynamics embedded in the broader market-state-social relationships. It examines how accessibility and inequalities are (re)produced and gover

BACKGROUND: Cosmetic surgery tourism has increased in popularity in recent years, with arising complications and post-operative follow-up care often managed in the client's home country, thereby burdening the Swiss health care system.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients with complications after cosmetic surgeries abroad and in Switzerland who were treated at the University Hospital Zurich between 2015 and 2019. Data were collected from medical records and reviewed for patient characteristics, procedures, complications, and treatment modalities.
RESULTS: A total of 228 patients (207

BACKGROUND: In resource-constrained health systems medical travel is a common alternative to seeking unavailable health services. This paper was motivated by the need to understand better the impact of such travel on households and health systems.
METHODS: We used primary data from 344 subsidized and 471 non-subsidized inbound medical travellers during June to December 2013 drawn from the North, Centre and South regions of the Maldives where three international airports are located. Using a researcher-administered questionnaire to acquire data, we calculated annual out-of-pocket (OOP) spendin

UNLABELLED: Nurse mobility, developments such as health tourism and the rapid expansion of health systems have increased the need for regulatory bodies to reach beyond their normal stakeholder groups so as to familiarize themselves with the legislation of other jurisdictions.
PURPOSE: A systematic examination of a cross-section of nursing legislation, to ascertain the degree of consistency in the number of definitions specified as well as their underlying structure, was conducted to identify opportunities to strengthen public protection and reduce barriers to freedom of movement.

The space tourism industry is growing due to advances in rocket technology. Privatised space travel exposes non-professional astronauts with health profiles comprising underlying conditions to microgravity. Prior research has typically focused on the effects of microgravity on human physiology in healthy astronauts, and little is known how the effects of microgravity may play out in the pathophysiology of underlying medical conditions, such as heart failure. This study used an established, controlled lumped mathematical model of the cardiopulmonary system to simulate the effects of entry into

BACKGROUND: Due to the shortage of oocyte donors in Australia, Australian women increasingly travel overseas for oocyte donation. South Africa is a recognised 'repro-hub' due to the accessibility of relatively affordable, high-quality assisted reproductive technology services and the availability of donors. In contrast to Australia, where only known and identity release altruistic gamete donation is permitted, in South Africa, oocyte donors are anonymous and receive fixed compensation.
AIMS: To explore the consequences for Australian recipients of cross-border oocyte donation (CBOD) in South

Assisted reproduction techniques (ARTs) have given rise to novel, non-traditional family models. Still, among the various applications and approaches of 'medically assisted procreation' (MAP), the most divisive one undoubtedly is 'gestational surrogacy' (GS), also in light of the rising number of couples who have chosen it over the past twenty years. Another major implication of ARTs is the creation of intentional (or intended) parenthood in addition to genetic one: the genetic parent's partner is thus defined as the intentional (or second) parent, who by free choice, shares the family project

Stem cell treatment outside of studied and approved medical indications can have unforeseen adverse consequences. Here, we present a 74-year-old male that underwent such therapy. The patient presented to our institution with progressive lower extremity weakness and urinary incontinence. He had previously undergone intrathecal stem cell therapy in Moscow, Russia for weakness and fatigue. Magnetic resonance imaging of his thoracic and lumbar spine showed marked enlargement of the cauda equina nerve roots and abnormal mass-like soft tissue involving the thoracolumbar thecal sac. INTRODUCTION: "Suicide tourism," the practice of traveling to a foreign destination to commit suicide, has been described in the medical literature. Additionally, committing suicide by self-administering veterinary medications has been previously described.
CASE DESCRIPTIONS: We report two successful and one unsuccessful suicide attempts involving border-town travelers utilizing self-administered veterinary pentobarbital over a 1-year period.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Health care practitioners should be aware of and informed about this phenomenon.

Introduction. Medical tourism for aesthetic surgery is popular. Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) occasionally cause surgical-site infections. As NTM grow in biofilms, implantations of foreign bodies are at risk. Due to late manifestation, infections occur when patients are back home, where they must be managed properly. Case Report. A 39-year-old healthy female was referred for acute infection of the right gluteal area. Five months before, she had breast implants replacement, abdominal liposuction, and gluteal lipofilling in Mexico. Three months postoperatively, implants were removed for NTM-

Paying for kidney or other organ donation has lead to heated debates about donor and recipient welfare. Many have argued that paying for donation leads to coercion and exploitation of the poor, and, in the end, produces more harm than good. Others have said that payment helps the poor, and we should all have sovereignty over our bodies and, thus, should be allowed to donate for remuneration. Although World Health Organizations and governments in many countries have now banned the process of paying for donation, there is still ongoing payment legally and illegally. Thus, this timely set of thre
