With ever-improving social and medical awareness about menstrual hygiene in India, the demand for sanitary napkins has increased significantly. The utilization of high-quality and environment-friendly raw materials to produce these pads is further supporting the growth of the market. However, with improving demand and usage, the need for proper disposal techniques becomes more relevant, since all of these pads get contaminated with human blood which makes them a biohazard and can cause significant damage to human health and the environment. One sanitary pad takes around 800 years to degrade na

BACKGROUND: Patients frequently end up with unused medications due to non-adherence, excessive supply, treatment changes, or early discontinuation. However, patients' views on unused medications and potential waste minimization interventions remain underexplored in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to explore patients' views and experiences regarding unused medications and potential solutions for reducing the amount of unused medications in homes.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews (n = 26) were conducted with adult patients who visited a health facility and were using presc

BACKGROUND: Climate change presents a critical public health challenge, and the health care sector is a substantial contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Operating rooms generate a disproportionate share of hospital waste, with orthopaedic surgery producing more waste than any other specialty. However, waste production in pediatric orthopaedic surgery remains poorly studied. This study aimed to quantify solid waste generated during common pediatric orthopaedic procedures and assess the perspectives of operating room staff regarding sustainability practices and barriers to waste reduction.

PURPOSE: Strontium-89 chloride (89Sr) is a new radiopharmaceutical that provides effective pain relief for metastatic bone lesions, and is expected to be available soon in the palliative management for metastatic bone pain in Japan. Because of relatively long physical half life (50.5 days), 89Sr may affect to the radioactive draining-water system by exceeding the limits of activity concentration for radioactive drain. In this article, the influence of 89Sr use on the radioactive drainage system was simulated.
METHODS: The standard tank capacity of drainage and draining frequency was determine

BACKGROUND: The recent Ebola outbreak led to the development of Ebola virus disease (EVD) best practices in clinical settings. However, after the care of EVD patients, proper medical waste management and disposal was identified as a crucial component to containing the virus. Category A waste-contaminated with EVD and other highly infectious pathogens-is strictly regulated by governmental agencies, and led to only several facilities willing to accept the waste.
METHODS: A pilot survey was administered to determine if U.S. medical waste facilities are prepared to handle or transport category A

BACKGROUND: The disposal of unclaimed remains is an interdisciplinary governance issue at the intersection of public health security and funeral governance in China, involving health, public security, civil affairs and finance authorities. Medical institutions, as the frontline implementers of temporary storage, death-information verification and custody handover, bear obligations that are not matched by corresponding administrative authority. This study addresses three questions: what legal and procedural norms govern the disposal of unclaimed remains in Chinese medical institutions; why powe

The aim of this work was to study the efficiency of the packed cage rotating biological contactor (RBC) system with synthetic wastewater (SWW) containing 800 mg/l BOD(5) with various cyanide residue concentrations and hydraulic loading time. The results showed that cyanide had a negative effect to both the system's efficiency and bio-film quality. An increase in cyanide concentration led to a decrease in bio-film growth and the consequent reduction in the removal efficiency of the system. Also, the effluent suspended solids (SS) of the system was increased with increasing cyanide concentration

Most of the literature on reducing carbon emissions is from the developed world, which does not represent the realities of the developing world. Therefore, the current study was planned to gauge the carbon footprint generated by total knee and hip arthroplasty at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, between November 2023 and July 2024. The trash was sorted into biohazardous, packaging, and discarded equipment categories. The institutional Carbon Management Tool was used to estimate the carbon footprint. Of the 45 cases, the mean total trash per case was 29.3±13.9kg. In the current practi

There is insufficient research on bioaerosols in hospital waste decontamination stations. This study aimed to investigate the effect of three-layer and N95 masks in reducing the inhalation risk of bacterial bioaerosols in a waste decontamination station at a teaching hospital. Active sampling was conducted on five different days at three locations: the yard, resting room, and autoclave room in three different modes: without a mask, with a three-layer mask, and with an N95 mask. Bacterial bioaerosols passing through the masks were identified using biochemical tests and polymerase chain reaction

UV irradiation technology as a membrane bioreactor (MBR) post-treatment was investigated and assessed. Both UV low pressure (LP) and medium pressure (MP) lamps were examined. The technology was installed in a pilot plant treating hospital wastewater to provide the study with adequate field data. The effect of the UV irradiation was enhanced with varying dosages of H2O2 to establish an advanced oxidation process (AOP). The efficiency of the pharmaceutical removal process was assessed by examining 14 micropollutants (antibiotics, analgesics, anticonvulsants, beta-blockers, cytostatics and X-ray

BACKGROUND: The quality of instruments and surgical expertise in minimally invasive surgery has developed markedly in the last two decades. Attention is now being turned to ways to allow surgeons to adopt more cost-effective and environmental-friendly approaches. This review explores current evidence on the cost and environmental impact of reusable versus single-use instruments. In addition, we aim to compare their quality, functionality and associated clinical outcomes.
METHOD: The Medline and EMBASE databases were searched for relevant literature from January 2000 to May 2015. Subject headi

BACKGROUND: Climate change is a central issue for our future. The increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere promotes the so-called greenhouse effect, resulting in climate change. Worldwide, the amount of plastic waste amounts to approximately 8 billion tons. The healthcare sector is responsible for around 4.4% of global net emissions contributing to the greenhouse effect. Measures to reduce CO2 emissions within the healthcare sector should be implemented accordingly. To make the issue of plastic waste in the operational sector more visible, in the present study we examined a

Environmental pollution has been a major concern for researchers and policymakers. A number of studies have been conducted to enquire the causes of environmental pollution which suggested numerous policies and techniques as remedial measures. One such major source of environmental pollution, as reported by previous studies, has been the garbage resulting from disposed hospital wastes. The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted into mass generation of medical waste which seems to have further deteriorated the issue of environmental pollution. This necessitates active attention fr

Sharps disposal containers are specially designed containers into which used needles and other medical-waste sharps are discarded. They are intended to protect hospital employees--including sharps users and other workers downstream--from sharps injuries that result from contact with needles and other sharp devices. Since our last Evaluation of sharps containers in August-September 1993, manufacturers have introduced various new designs that may further reduce the risk of needlesticks and other sharp-object injuries (SOIs). These designs are intended to prevent users from overfilling the sharps

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in medical waste generation, posing hazards to both the environment and global health. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic's medical waste hazard may persist long after the pandemic itself subsides. Improper disposal of medical waste can contaminate environment, posing risks to ecosystems and public health. Discarded medical rubber gloves, for example, can become a source of infection, improper disposal of these gloves can escalate the spread of infectious diseases and increase the risk of transmission of the virus to the general public. This study pro

Healthcare waste (HCW) is generated in different healthcare facilities (HCFs), such as hospitals, laboratories, veterinary clinics, research centres and nursing homes. It has been assessed that the majority of medical waste does not pose a risk to humans. It is estimated that 15% of the total amount of produced HCW is hazardous and can be infectious, toxic or radioactive. Hazardous waste is a special type of waste which, if not properly treated, can pose a risk to human health and to the environment. HCW contains potentially harmful microorganisms that can be spread among healthcare personnel,
