CONTEXT: Intraocular melanoma of the ciliary body and choroid is the most common primary ocular malignant tumor in adults and the most common noncutaneous melanoma.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the most salient clinical features, histopathologic findings, and treatment modalities of intraocular melanoma, as well as the novel therapies currently being tested.

A case of osteogenic melanoma arising in the sole of the foot of a 75-year-old male is described. The patient had a history of cutaneous malignant melanoma of the left sole from 15 years previously with local recurrence 5 years previously. A second recurrence presented as an unencapsulated, poorly circumscribed mass measuring 7.5x6x3 cm, located in the dermis, subcutis and muscle, and composed of a lobular growth of malignant osteocartilaginous elements with foci of epithelioid cells. This article examines all cases of malignant melanoma referred to Children's Hospital, Boston, and to the author over the period 1959-1995. Criteria for inclusion in the study included (1) age up to 15 years, (2) availability of microscopic slides, and (3) availability of demographic data. Eight cases of melanoma of the lower female urogenital tract are presented. The lesions were located 5 in the vulva, 2 in the vagina and 1 in the urethra. From the Scottish Melanoma Group database for south-east Scotland we evaluated 5-year follow-up in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma excised between 1979 and 1994 and devised an 'evidence-based' review protocol.
