Ocular herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) infections remain an important cause of corneal disease which may result in a loss of vision. Meliacine (MA), an antiviral activity present in crude leaf extracts of Melia azedarach L. that inhibits HSV-1 multiplication in vitro, was studied in a murine herpetic stromal keratitis experimental model. Adult Balb/c mice were inoculated with HSV-1 at their corneas after abrasion. MA was administered topically three times a day for 3 consecutive days, beginning at 24 and 96 hr after infection. Infected animals treated or not with MA were monitored for the

The stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway plays a critical role in inflammatory diseases like ulcerative colitis (UC), yet no STING inhibitors are clinically available. Toosendanin (TSN), a bioactive triterpenoid from fruits of Melia toosendan, has been shown to ameliorate UC, though its exact molecular targets and detailed mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigates whether TSN inhibits STING pathway activation to alleviate UC and identifies potential target proteins involved in suppressing STING signaling. Herein, we first confirmed TSN's suppression of STING-dependent genes,

Termites cause a serious menace to wooden structures all over the world. They rely mostly on entozoic fauna residing in their hindgut for the digestion of cellulosic and hemicellulosic materials. One of the ways to control termites is through their gut symbionts. The present study was designed to characterize the hindgut bacteria isolated from Odontotermes obesus and Heterotermes indicola. Furthermore, the growth inhibitory effect of eight tropical plant extracts was investigated to find out potential control agents for these bacterial isolates. The characterization of bacteria was carried out

BACKGROUND: The majority of the Ethiopian population is at risk of malaria largely caused by Plasmodium falciparum. The resistance of the parasite to existing drugs is the main challenge in the control of the disease and thus new therapeutic drugs are required. In Ethiopia, people use different plant species to treat malaria. However, very few of them have so far been evaluated for their safety level and antimalarial activity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and antimalarial activity of extracts of Ajuga integrifolia, Clerodendrum myricoides, Melia azedarach, Peponium vo

INTRODUCTION: Cold burn wounds differ in their pathophysiological spectrum as compared to other types of burn wounds. These wounds have prolonged devastating effects on the body including hypertrophic scars, contracture, and necrosis. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered promising candidates for the complete regeneration of burn wounds. However, transplanted MSCs face the challenge to survive under the harsh tissue conditions. Preconditioning of MSCs with bioactive compounds may enhance their survival and regenerative potential for use in clinical applications. Bioactive compounds of M

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death with a median survival of 3-11 months when metastatic. We present a patient with metastatic pancreatic cancer and an exceptional response to initial systemic chemotherapy with FOLFIRINOX (fluorouracil, leucovorin, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin). Despite evidence of disease control on body imaging, he developed symptomatic leptomeningeal disease and brain metastases 29 months into treatment. He received aggressive treatment with capecitabine and irinotecan, intrathecal topotecan, and eventually bevacizumab. He did well for 36 w

The incorporation of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) into cancer treatment has revolutionized oncology, providing marked advantages in managing various types of cancer. Nevertheless, the increasing use of ICIs has led to the emergence of immune‑related side effects, including autoimmune diseases such as inflammatory arthritis. IL‑6 signaling is crucial in the development of inflammatory arthritis and is linked to both the benefits and adverse effects of ICIs. The present review summarizes the latest progress in the IL‑6 pathway in inflammatory arthritis and discusses the therapeutic potent
