Novel siadenovirus infection in a cockatiel with chronic liver disease.

A 15-year-old female cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) undergoing long term management for hepatopathy died and underwent necropsy. Microscopic findings were consistent with chronic liver disease characterized by distorted hepatic architecture, fibrosis and biliary proliferation. The additional finding of large intranuclear inclusion bodies within hepatocytes and renal tubular epithelium prompted diagnostic next generation sequencing. The assembled sequences isolated from pooled kidney and liver were related to siadenoviruses. The genus Siadenovirus, within the family Adenoviridae, includes se

Can the same species of Platynosomum (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae) infect both mammalian and avian hosts?

The importance of platynosomiasis has increased in feline veterinary practice, but aspects related to the specificity of Platynosomum spp. in definitive hosts requires further study. Although morphological traits suggest that the same species, P. illiciens, may infect both birds and mammals, the synonymies previously proposed have not been widely accepted, likely because host specificity is assumed. In addition, the name P. fastosum has frequently been used for parasites recovered from mammals. In the present study, metacercariae (n= 100/animal) of P. illiciens recovered from lizards (Hemidact

Eye lesions in pet birds.

Amongst eye lesions in birds that died in quarantine, cataracts were the most common disorders (37/241, 15.4%), being prevalent in the annular pads of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva aestiva) and budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). The incidence in male birds was more than twice that in females. Deposition of crystals, mostly in the cornea, was the second most frequent lesion (21/293, 8.7%), mainly found in cockatiels, parakeets (Psittacula krameri manillensis), Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva aestiva), budgerigars and finches (Poephila gouldiae gouldiae)

Draft genome of the Crimson rosella (Platycercus elegans elegans), an Australian parrot and key resource for the study of host-pathogen interaction in Psittaciformes.

OBJECTIVES: The Crimson rosella (Platycercus elegans) is a common parrot of Australia, and most individuals are infected with Beak and Feather Disease Virus (BFDV). In other parrot species, the virus can cause feather loss, beak deformities, immune suppression and mortality. All parrots globally are considered susceptible to the virus and thus there are sizable conservation benefits from better understanding of its host-pathogen interactions and evolution, particularly because parrots are already among the most threatened bird taxa globally. The draft genome reported here is both a valuable sc

Phase effects in masking by harmonic complexes in birds.

Masking by harmonic complexes depends on the frequency content of the masker and its phase spectrum. Harmonic complexes created with negative Schroeder phases (component phases decreasing with increasing frequency) produce more masking than those with positive Schroeder phases (increasing phase) in humans, but not in birds. The masking differences in humans have been attributed to interactions between the masker phase spectrum and the phase characteristic of the basilar membrane. In birds, the similarity in masking by positive and negative Schroeder maskers, and reduced masking by cosine-phase

Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia presenting as acute generalised peritonism.

A 63 year old man presented with the signs of acute generalised peritonism in the presence of a clear chest radiograph. At laparotomy no abnormal findings were noted. Further inquiries revealed a history of recent acquisition of budgerigars, over the following days the chest radiograph developed patchy opacification. Subsequently IgG immunofluorescence confirmed the diagnosis of Chlamydia psittaci. The presentation of psittacosis with gastrointestinal features is well recognised. This is believed to be the first account in the literature of a human case of Chl psittaci pneumonia presenting wit

Comparison of Two Treatment Modalities and PCR to Assess Treatment Effectiveness in Macrorhabdosis.

Macrorhabdosis is a debilitating disease condition that affects budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), and many other bird species worldwide. Macrorhabdus ornithogaster is a pathogen which leads to nonspecific clinical signs, and to date, diagnosis as well as therapy are still challenging. In this study, medical histories of 32 budgerigars and 7 cockatiels with macrorhabdosis diagnosed clinically and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) within a period of 24 months (from January 2016 to January 2018) were retrospectively analyzed. Anterior forebrain pathway in parrots is necessary for producing learned vocalizations with individual signatures.

Parrots have enormous vocal imitation capacities and produce individually unique vocal signatures. Like songbirds, parrots have a nucleated neural song system with distinct anterior (AFP) and posterior forebrain pathways (PFP). To test if song systems of parrots and songbirds, which diverged over 50 million years ago, have a similar functional organization, we first established a neuroscience-compatible call-and-response behavioral paradigm to elicit learned contact calls in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Using variational autoencoder-based machine learning methods, we show that contac

The neuro-immune crosstalk between periphery and central nervous system during acute immune response to virus-mimicking RNA in parrots.

Parrots, valued companion animals with a concerning conservation status, can act as reservoirs for zoonotic diseases. During various infections, systemic inflammation significantly impairs host health. However, the regulation of inflammatory responses in birds, particularly in cognitively advanced parrots, remains poorly understood. Here, we examine parrot systemic inflammation in response to virus-mimicking stimulation. In budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), a novel model for neuroinflammation research, we induced sterile inflammation with synthetic poly(I:C) RNA and analysed dose-, time-

Bacterial communities along parrot digestive and respiratory tracts: the effects of sample type, species and time.

Digestive and respiratory tracts are inhabited by rich bacterial communities that can vary between their different segments. In comparison with other bird taxa with developed caeca, parrots that lack caeca have relatively lower variability in intestinal morphology. Here, based on 16S rRNA metabarcoding, we describe variation in microbiota across different parts of parrot digestive and respiratory tracts both at interspecies and intraspecies levels. In domesticated budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), we describe the bacterial variation across eight selected sections of respiratory and digesti

Investigation and Sequence Analysis of Avian Polyomavirus and Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease Virus from Companion Birds in Eastern Turkey.

INTRODUCTION: Avian polyomavirus (APV) and psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDV) induce contagious and persistent diseases that affect the beaks, feathers, and immune systems of companion birds. APV causes hepatitis, ascites, hydropericardium, depression, feather disorders, abdominal distension, and potentially death. PBFDV can induce progressive beak deformity, feather dystrophy, and plumage loss. We conducted the first prevalence survey of both APV and PBFDV infections in companion birds in eastern Turkey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 113 fresh dropping samples from apparent

Genetic Characterization of Toxoplasma gondii from Zoo Wildlife and Pet Birds in Fujian, China.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis, a worldwide zoonotic disease, is caused by Toxoplasma gondii. The distribution of genetic diversity of T. gondii in wild animals is of great importance to understand the transmission of the parasite in the environment. However, little is known about T. gondii prevalence in wild animals and birds in China. METHODS: We conducted the genetic characterization of T. gondii isolated from Zoo Wild Animals and Pet Birds in Fujian Province, Southeastern China. Heart tissues were collected from 45 zoo animals and 140 pet birds. After identified using B1 gene, the genetic dive

Cryptosporidium avium n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) in birds.

The morphological, biological, and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium avian genotype V are described, and the species name Cryptosporidium avium is proposed to reflect its specificity for birds under natural and experimental conditions. Oocysts of C. avium measured 5.30-6.90 μm (mean = 6.26 μm) × 4.30-5.50 μm (mean = 4.86 μm) with a length to width ratio of 1.29 (1.14-1.47). Oocysts of C. avium obtained from four naturally infected red-crowned parakeets (Cyanoramphus novaezealandiae) were infectious for 6-month-old budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and hens (Gallus gallus f. dome

Cochlear deafferentation impairs perception of acoustic onset cues in kainate-exposed budgerigars.

Synaptopathy is a common cochlear pathology involving damage, dysfunction, and loss of auditory-nerve synapses with sensory hair cells. Cochlear synaptopathy can occur following sound overexposure due to glutamate excitotoxicity. Synaptopathy is undetectable with the clinical audiogram and is widely hypothesized to cause "hidden hearing loss," i.e., impaired perception of speech and other complex sounds under challenging listening conditions. However, evidence that cochlear synaptopathy causes hidden hearing loss is mixed, and the specific aspects of auditory perception impacted by synaptopath

Molecular characterization of Giardia psittaci by multilocus sequence analysis.

Multilocus sequence analyses targeting small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA), elongation factor 1 alpha (ef1α), glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh), and beta giardin (β-giardin) were performed on Giardia psittaci isolates from three Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) and four Barred parakeets (Bolborhynchus lineola) kept in individual households or imported from overseas. Nucleotide differences and phylogenetic analyses at four loci indicate the distinction of G. psittaci from the other known Giardia species: Giardia muris, Giardia microti, Giardia ardeae, and Giardia duodenalis assemblages. Convergent vocal representations in parrot and human forebrain motor networks.

Cortical networks for the production of spoken language in humans are organized by phonetic features1,2, such as articulatory parameters3,4 and vocal pitch5,6. Previous research has failed to find an equivalent forebrain representation in other species7-11. To investigate whether this functional organization is unique to humans, here we performed population recordings in the vocal production circuitry of the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), a small parrot that can generate flexible vocal output12-15, including mimicked speech sounds16. Using high-density silicon probes17, we measured the

Development of a rapid recombinase polymerase amplification assay for avian polyomaviruses.

Budgerigar fledgling disease, caused by avian polyomavirus (APV), is an immunosuppressive condition in budgerigars that typically manifests as abdominal swelling, absence of down feathers on the dorsal and ventral regions, subdermal bleeding in nestlings, and high mortality. A new APV detection relied on real-time quantitative recombinase polymerase amplification (real-time RPA) targeting the large T antigen gene using specific probe and primers. Detection can be accomplished within 25 minutes at 41°C, with this detection threshold of 2.56 × 102 copies/μL. The real-time RPA assay specific dete
