Episodic memory deficit in elderly adults with suspected delusional disorder.

This study examined memory functions in two groups of elderly adults with and without suspected delusional disorder (SDD). The samples consisted of 66 normal elderly subjects and 33 elderly subjects with symptoms, as reported by close informants, of delusional disorder. Subjects were matched with regard to age, gender and education, and there were no differences between the two groups with regard to performance of visuo-spatial and primary memory tasks. Subjects were examined concerning a variety of episodic recall and recognition tasks. The results demonstrated that subjects with SDD performe

Reliability of computational versus noncomputational metrics of working memory and episodic memory in serious mental illness.

Computational models can be used to decompose overall behavior into individual parameters that are designed to isolate specific cognitive and neural processes and provide new information about psychiatric disorders. However, it is not yet clear whether these computational parameters have sufficient reliability to replace traditional noncomputational metrics, especially in severe mental illness. The present study asked whether computational parameters can be as reliable as, or even more reliable than, noncomputational performance metrics in healthy control participants (n = 105) and people with

Dysfunction of the episodic memory network in the Alzheimer's disease cascade.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major cause of dementia and cognitive decline. Here, we assessed how episodic memory (EM) network dysfunction, a hallmark of AD, is related to the longitudinal progression of AD biomarkers, neurodegeneration and cognition using data from the DZNE DELCODE study. This data set includes over 1000 longitudinal functional magnetic resonance imaging measurements of EM network function. We related activation and deactivation of EM to individual disease progression scores from a disease progression model. Voxel-wise analyses revealed widespread loss of deactivation and ac

Episodic Memory Precision and Reality Monitoring Following Stimulation of Angular Gyrus.

The qualities of remembered experiences are often used to inform "reality monitoring" judgments, our ability to distinguish real and imagined events. Previous experiments have tended to investigate only whether reality monitoring decisions are accurate or not, providing little insight into the extent to which reality monitoring may be affected by qualities of the underlying mnemonic representations. We used a continuous-response memory precision task to measure the quality of remembered experiences that underlie two different types of reality monitoring decisions: self/experimenter decisions t

Effects of ketamine on brain function during metacognition of episodic memory.

Only little research has been conducted on the pharmacological underpinnings of metacognition. Here, we tested the modulatory effects of a single intravenous dose (100 ng/ml) of the N-methyl-D-aspartate-glutamate-receptor antagonist ketamine, a compound known to induce altered states of consciousness, on metacognition and its neural correlates. Fifty-three young, healthy adults completed two study phases of an episodic memory task involving both encoding and retrieval in a double-blind, placebo-controlled fMRI study. Trial-by-trial confidence ratings were collected during retrieval. Effects on

Individual-specific and shared representations during episodic memory encoding and retrieval.

Although human memories seem unique to each individual, they are shared to a great extent across individuals. Previous studies have examined, separately, subject-specific and cross-subject shared representations during memory encoding and retrieval, but how shared memories are formed from individually encoded representations is not clearly understood. Using a unique fMRI design involving memory encoding and retrieval, and representational similarity analysis to link representations from different individuals, brain regions, and processing stages, the current study revealed that distributed bra

Impaired episodic simulation in a patient with visual memory deficit amnesia.

For the first time, we assess episodic simulation in a patient with visual memory deficit amnesia, following damage to visual association cortices. Compared to control participants, the patient with visual memory deficit amnesia shows severely restricted responses when asked to simulate different types of future episodic scenarios. Surprisingly, the patient's responses are more limited in cases where the scenarios require less reliance on visual information. We explain this counterintuitive finding through discussing how the severe retrograde amnesia in visual memory deficit amnesia limits the

Gamma oscillatory activity is impaired in episodic memory encoding with age.

The present study proposes to investigate age-related episodic memory impairment in encoding. We collected ERPs in young and old participants performing a word-encoding task. For subsequently remembered words, young adults had greater activity at the left and anterior electrode sites, whereas old adults had greater posterior activity. Performance correlated positively with central sites in young adults but with left parietal hemisphere activity in old adults. Plus, a large left frontoparietal network increased its activity during the successful encoding for the Beta (13-30 Hz) and Gamma (30-10

Set-relevance determines the impact of distractors on episodic memory retrieval.

We investigated the interplay between stimulus-driven attention and memory retrieval with a novel interference paradigm that engaged both systems concurrently on each trial. Participants encoded a 45-min movie on Day 1 and, on Day 2, performed a temporal order judgment task during fMRI. Each retrieval trial comprised three images presented sequentially, and the task required participants to judge the temporal order of the first and the last images ("memory probes") while ignoring the second image, which was task irrelevant ("attention distractor"). We manipulated the content relatedness and th

Extending possible applications of an episodic-like memory task in rats.

Recently, an object recognition episodic-like memory task was proposed in rodents. However, the short retention delay of the task narrows its applications. This study verifies whether this task can be evoked after 24h. Additionally, the effect of a classical amnestic agent (scopolamine) on episodic-like memory consolidation was investigated. Rats showed increased exploration of old over recent objects and spent more time exploring displaced over stationary object. Both old over recent and displaced over stationary objects preferences were abolished by pos-training scopolamine administration (1

Neuroanatomical and cognitive mediators of age-related differences in episodic memory.

Aging is associated with declines in episodic memory. In this study, the authors used a path analysis framework to explore the mediating role of differences in brain structure, executive functions, and processing speed in age-related differences in episodic memory. Measures of regional brain volume (prefrontal gray and white matter, caudate, hippocampus, visual cortex), executive functions (working memory, inhibitory control, task switching, temporal processing), processing speed, and episodic memory were obtained in a sample of young and older adults. As expected, age was linked to reduction

The role of prefrontal cortex in verbal episodic memory: rTMS evidence.

Long-term, episodic memory processing is supposed to involve the prefrontal cortex asymmetrically. Here we investigate the role of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in encoding and retrieval of semantically related or unrelated word pairs. Subjects were required to perform a task consisting of two parts: a study phase (encoding), in which word pairs were presented, and a test phase (retrieval), during which stimuli previously presented had to be recognized among other stimuli. Consistently with our previous findings using pictures, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) h

Episodic memory in transient global amnesia: encoding, storage, or retrieval deficit?

OBJECTIVES: To assess episodic memory (especially anterograde amnesia) during the acute phase of transient global amnesia to differentiate an encoding, a storage, or a retrieval deficit. METHODS: In three patients, whose amnestic episode fulfilled all current criteria for transient global amnesia, a neuropsychological protocol was administered which included a word learning task derived from the Grober and Buschke's procedure. RESULTS: In one patient, the results suggested an encoding deficit, and in two others, a storage deficit. CONCLUSIONS: The encoding/storage impairment concerning ante

[Episodic and semantic memory after traumatic brain injury in a child].

In an early-life, a memory disturbance affects the learning and school record directly. Furthermore, it may cause the problem of maltreatment or adaptation difficulty for school life. We report a child amnesia caused by a traumatic brain injury when she was 9 years old. We examined her episodic and semantic memory. We developed 3-steps tasks of recognition and recall for the post-accident episodic memory. First, the examiner presented the patient with four words orally including a label of her episode, and asked her to choose one that she felt familiar with (the recognition of the episodic lab

Differential effects of early hippocampal pathology on episodic and semantic memory.

Global anterograde amnesia is described in three patients with brain injuries that occurred in one case at birth, in another by age 4, and in the third at age 9. Magnetic resonance techniques revealed bilateral hippocampal pathology in all three cases. Remarkably, despite their pronounced amnesia for the episodes of everyday life, all three patients attended mainstream schools and attained levels of speech and language competence, literacy, and factual knowledge that are within the low average to average range. The findings provide support for the view that the episodic and semantic components

Neural Organization of Episodic Memory and Navigation in Children and Adults.

Episodic memory and spatial navigation are often viewed as interlinked, in part due to their shared reliance on medial-temporal lobe (MTL) structures. At the same time, there are important differences, for example, natural spatial navigation requires moving one's body through space while episodic memory does not. We investigated whether naturalistically encoded memories that were either episodic or additionally embedded in a navigational experience relied on overlapping or distinct neural networks. Children ages 8-13 years old and young adults viewed pictures of objects that they had previousl

Sleep benefits cross-dimensional binding of spatial context in episodic memory.

The active systems consolidation hypothesis predicts that sleep compared to wakefulness benefits context binding in episodic memory for retention intervals of up to 12 h. Extending previous research on sleep benefits in item-context associative memory, we investigated whether sleep also improves bound source memory for cross-dimensional context associations. In a source-monitoring experiment, we used intentionally learned pictures as items and incidentally learned horizontal and vertical screen positions as context dimensions to compare cross-dimensional binding in spatial source memory for re

Episodic memory rehabilitation for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders: A scoping review.

Despite extensive research on HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), interest in cognitive rehabilitation has emerged only within the past 15 years. HAND are characterised by mild-to-moderate impairments in multiple cognitive domains: attention, episodic memory and executive functions. In the context of HAND, the prevalence of episodic memory disorders is high, ranging from 40% to 65% across studies. This scoping review aims to identify available evidence of rehabilitation programmes targeting episodic memory disorders associated with HIV and to examine their characteristics and theor

Dendritic spine head diameter predicts episodic memory performance in older adults.

Episodic memory in older adults is varied and perceived to rely on numbers of synapses or dendritic spines. We analyzed 2157 neurons among 128 older individuals from the Religious Orders Study and Rush Memory and Aging Project. Analysis of 55,521 individual dendritic spines by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and nested model cross-validation revealed that the dendritic spine head diameter in the temporal cortex, but not the premotor cortex, improved the prediction of episodic memory performance in models containing β amyloid plaque scores, neurofibrillary tangle path

Temporal lobe activation during episodic memory encoding following traumatic brain injury.

The temporal lobes are critical for encoding and retrieving episodic memories. The temporal lobes are preferentially disrupted following a traumatic brain injury (TBI), likely contributing to the difficulties observed in episodic memory. However, the underlying neural changes that precipitate or maintain these difficulties in individuals with TBI remains poorly understood. Here, we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to interrogate the relationship between temporal lobe activation and encoding of episodic stimuli. Participants encoded face, scene, and animal stimuli during an fMRI
