Korsakoff's syndrome: a study of the relation between anterograde amnesia and remote memory impairment.

Patients with Korsakoff's syndrome were evaluated with nine tests of new learning ability and three tests of remote memory to determine the correlation between anterograde amnesia and remote memory impairment. There was no correlation between the severity of anterograde amnesia and either the overall severity of remote memory impairment (1940s-1970s) or the impairment observed for more remote time periods (1940s-1950s). However, the correlation between remote memory impairment and anterograde amnesia became progressively stronger with the recency of the time period and was significant for the

Differentiating the cognitive profile of schizophrenia from that of Alzheimer disease and depression in late life.

BACKGROUND: To compare the cognitive profile of older patients with schizophrenia to those with other neuropsychiatric disorders assessed in a hospital-based memory clinic. METHODS: Demographic, clinical, and cognitive data of all patients referred to the memory clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health between April 1, 2006 and August 15, 2008 were reviewed. We then identified four groups of older patients with: (1) late-life schizophrenia (LLS) and no dementia or depression (DEP); (2) Alzheimer's disease (AD); (3) DEP and no dementia or LLS; (4) normal cognition (NC) and no DEP o

Cholinergic 'blockade' as a model for cholinergic depletion. A comparison of the memory deficits with those of Alzheimer-type dementia and the alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome.

The effect of cholinergic 'blockade' on human memory performance as a model for the effect of cholinergic depletion in clinical disorders was investigated. A wide range of memory functions was assessed in 70 subjects, using tests which were identical or closely similar to those which have previously been employed in clinical studies of Alzheimer and Korsakoff patients. In addition, a physiological measure of the degree of central cholinergic blockade was included, as well as measures of subjective arousal and objective attention. It was found that cholinergic blockade had no significant effect

Visual-spatial learning and memory in schizotypal personality disorder: continued evidence for the importance of working memory in the schizophrenia spectrum.

Verbal episodic memory deficits, a well-established feature of the schizophrenia spectrum, have also been found in individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), although visual-spatial episodic memory has proven harder to examine. To address this, we administered the Visual Object Learning Test (VOLT), a measure of visual-spatial learning and memory, as well as the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) and a verbal working memory test, to 50 individuals with SPD, 19 with other personality disorders (OPD), and 17 healthy volunteers. Compared to both other groups, individuals with SP

Neuropsychological assessment, depression, and past exposure to organic solvents.

This study assessed neuropsychological performance in persons with a history of exposure to organic solvents and nonexposed healthy controls. Structured clinical interviews were also done to determine current Axis I diagnosis of mood disorder to assess the contribution of mood disorder to neuropsychological performance. Solvent-exposed participants were found to have significantly reduced scores on 3 of 5 neuropsychological clusters (learning and memory, visuospatial, psychomotor speed) compared to controls. No differences were found between the groups on measures of general intelligence. With

Sensory basis of speech motor learning and memory.

Changes to speech offer a quantifiable means to assess speech motor learning, and the resulting memory is thought to be motor in nature. Here, we evaluate this idea and show instead that memory for speech movements has a sensory basis. Speech motor learning, using altered auditory feedback, provides an experimental model to address this question as it involves auditory, somatosensory, and motor components to learning. Transcranial magnetic stimulation was used to disrupt auditory (superior temporal gyrus, STG), posterior somatosensory (S1), or motor (M1) cortex following speech motor learning.

Auditory temporal processing deficits and language disorders in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.

UNLABELLED: Previous findings from a case report led to the argument of whether other patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) may have abnormal central auditory function, particularly auditory temporal processing. We hypothesized that it is associated with language and learning disabilities in this population. The aim of this study was to measure central auditory temporal function in NF1 patients and correlate it with the results of language evaluation tests. A descriptive/comparative study including 25 NF1 individuals and 22 healthy controls compared their performances on audiometric eva

Age-Related Changes in the Behavior of Apolipoprotein E Knockout Mice.

The knockout mouse model, B6.129P2-Apoetm1Unc is homozygotic for the Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) deletion; thus, it is capable of developing hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis but ApoE is also a lipid-transport protein abundantly expressed in most neurons in the central nervous system, so these animals could also be models of neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this study was to determine age-related changes in spontaneous behavior and in learning and memory of Apolipoprotein E knockout mice. Spontaneous behavioral measurements included sleeping pattern, motor coordination and balance by rotaro

Memory persistence enhancement by post-learning moderate exercise requires de novo protein synthesis in the dorsal hippocampus.

Acute moderate-intensity exercise (AME) after learning has been reported to exogenously boost consolidation of hippocampus-dependent memory, resulting in improved long-term persistence. However, the neuronal mechanism remains poorly understood. Short-term, hippocampus-dependent memory produced by weak encoding can be transformed into long-term memory through an immediate, strong behavioral event, which causes overlapping activation of the hippocampus. Hippocampal de novo protein synthesis is essential for achieving memory consolidation in this way. As AME activates the hippocampus, enhanced me

Long-term administration of excess zinc impairs learning and memory in aged mice.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential element, but excess amounts are known to cause neurotoxic effects. The risk of excessive Zn intake is increased by supplementing food intake with dietary supplements. Ageing affects many cellular processes that predispose individuals to neurodegeneration. Indeed, the prevalence of senile dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and vascular-type dementia increases with age. As such, we investigated the effects of long-term exposure to excess Zn on learning and memory in aged mice. ICR-JCL female mice (aged 26 weeks) were administered 0, 200, or 500 p

Nogo-A Protein Mediates Oxidative Stress and Synaptic Damage Induced by High-Altitude Hypoxia in the Rat Hippocampus.

OBJECTIVE: High-altitude hypoxia exposure often damages hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. Nogo-A is an important axonal growth inhibitory factor. However, its function in high-altitude hypoxia and its mechanism of action remain unclear. METHODS: In an in vivo study, a low-pressure oxygen chamber was used to simulate high-altitude hypoxia, and genetic or pharmacological intervention was used to block the Nogo-A/NgR1 signaling pathway. Contextual fear conditioning and Morris water maze behavioral tests were used to assess learning and memory in rats, and synaptic damage in the hippocam

Accelerated long-term forgetting as an objective marker of subjective memory impairment in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF), defined as an increased rate of memory loss over extended intervals, has so far been detected in a pilot study of patients with mild multiple sclerosis (MS). This study aimed to (I) confirm the presence of ALF in a larger, heterogeneous MS sample, (II) explore associations with patient-reported outcomes, and (III) assess the diagnostic performance of ALF tests for subjective memory impairment. METHODS: This study compared 62 MS patients and 65 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls using standardized memory tests (RAVLT, WMS-IV L

Neuropsychological tests associated with symptomatic HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) in a cohort of older adults in Tanzania.

OBJECTIVE: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) prevalence is expected to increase in East Africa as treatment coverage increases, survival improves, and this population ages. This study aimed to better understand the current cognitive phenotype of this newly emergent population of older combination antiretroviral therapy (cART)-treated people living with HIV (PLWH), in which current screening measures lack accuracy. This will facilitate the refinement of HAND cognitive screening tools for this setting. METHOD: This is a secondary analysis of 253 PLWH a

One-trial perceptual learning in the absence of conscious remembering and independent of the medial temporal lobe.

A degraded, black-and-white image of an object, which appears meaningless on first presentation, is easily identified after a single exposure to the original, intact image. This striking example of perceptual learning reflects a rapid (one-trial) change in performance, but the kind of learning that is involved is not known. We asked whether this learning depends on conscious (hippocampus-dependent) memory for the images that have been presented or on an unconscious (hippocampus-independent) change in the perception of images, independently of the ability to remember them. We tested five memory

The Impact of Right Temporal Lobe Epilepsy On Nonverbal Memory: Meta-regression of Stimulus- and Task-related Moderators.

Nonverbal memory tests have great potential value for detecting the impact of lateralized pathology and predicting the risk of memory loss following right temporal lobe resection (TLR) for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients, but this potential has not been realized. Previous reviews suggest that stimulus type moderates the capacity of nonverbal memory tests to detect right-lateralized pathology (i.e., faces > designs), but the roles of other task-related factors have not been systematically explored. We address these limitations using mixed model meta-regression (k = 158) of right-lateraliz

Cognitive consequences of cannabis use: comparison with abuse of stimulants and heroin with regard to attention, memory and executive functions.

This review aims to compare cognitive consequence between cannabis, and stimulants and heroin with regards to attention, memory and executive functions. The available studies using brain imaging techniques and neuropsychological tests show that acutely, all drugs create a disharmony in the neuropsychological network, causing a decrease of activity in areas responsible for short-term memory and attention, with the possible exception of heroin. Cannabis induces loss of internal control and cognitive impairment, especially of attention and memory, for the duration of intoxication. Heavy cannabis

A cross-cultural comparison of verbal learning and memory functions in reading disabled American and Norwegian adolescents.

The present study reports the results of a cross-cultural analysis of the role of phonetic and semantic cues in verbal learning and memory. A newly developed memory test procedure, the Bergen-Tucson Verbal Learning Test (BTVLT), expands earlier test procedures as phonetic cues are applied in addition to semantic cues in a cued recall procedure. Samples of reading disabled and typically developed adolescents from the US and from Norway were recruited as voluntary participants. The results indicate that the stimulus materials chosen for the memory test are working well in both American and in No

Executive functioning affects verbal learning process in multiple sclerosis patients: Behavioural and imaging results.

Verbal learning and memory deficits are among the most frequent in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) and have been shown to be affected by deficits in other cognitive domains, such as information processing speed and executive functioning (EF). In the present study, we aimed to further investigate the differential impact that EF may exert on verbal learning and memory on both behavioural and neural levels. Seventy pwMS were assessed with a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological tests, including tests of verbal memory (Selective Reminding Test; SRT) and EF (Stroop test; Phonemic and Al

Self-assessed memory problems in everyday life in relation to assessed cognitive domains in neuropsychological tests: A longitudinal study of adult patients with acquired brain injury.

Few long-term studies exist regarding memory problems following acquired brain injury and a minimal amount is known regarding the relationship between self-reported memory difficulties and objective neuropsychological measures. This knowledge gap may affect planning of effective rehabilitation interventions. Self-reported memory problems in everyday life and performance on neuropsychological tests were examined in a longitudinal study. Thirty-nine patients with acquired brain injury were recruited from a rehabilitation unit and assessed at one, two, and ten years post-injury using Everyday Mem

Brain STAT5 signaling modulates learning and memory formation.

The signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (STAT5) is a transcription factor recruited by numerous cytokines. STAT5 is important for several physiological functions, including body and tissue growth, mammary gland development, immune system and lipid metabolism. However, the role of STAT5 signaling for brain functions is still poorly investigated, especially regarding cognitive aspects. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate whether brain STAT5 signaling modulates learning and memory formation. For this purpose, brain-specific STAT5 knockout (STAT5 KO) mic
