Child abuse in religiously-affiliated institutions: long-term impact on men's mental health.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the long-term impact of physical and sexual abuse of boys by someone in a trusting, non-familial relationship. This clinical study reports on the psychological functioning of men (N = 76) with substantiated claims against a residential religiously-affiliated institution for multiple and severe incidents of sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse during childhood. The abuse was perpetrated by several adults in positions of authority and trust at the institution. METHODS: Each participant received a clinical interview and was administered psychological tests and a struct

The men's health center: Disparities in gender specific health services among the top 50 "best hospitals" in America.

OBJECTIVE: Gender-specific integrated health services have long existed in the arena of women's health care, but men's health centers (MHCs) have only recently emerged as a novel practice model. Here, we seek to evaluate the prevalence and format of MHCs found in the leading academic medical centers in the United States. METHODS: The US News & World Report's Top 50 Ranked Hospitals for Urology was used as our cohort. Data were gathered on the presence of MHCs and types of providers and conditions treated. An equivalent search was performed for women's health centers (WHCs). RESULTS: Sixteen

Masculine capital and men's body image: managing appearance concerns and implications for health interventions.

OBJECTIVE: Men's body dissatisfaction is a significant public health concern, yet existing interventions show limited effectiveness. This study explores how masculinity shapes men's body image experiences which may inform more effective, gender-sensitive interventions. METHODS AND MEASURES: A qualitative design was employed using an anonymous online survey containing open-ended questions about body image and related experiences. One hundred- and fourteen-men aged 16-39 participated. Responses were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, with contextual negotiation of masculine capital app

Mosaic Loss of Y Chromosome in White Blood Cells: Its Impact on Men's Health.

We present a brief introduction of loss of Y chromosome (LOY) in blood and describe the known risk factors for this condition. We then overview the associations between LOY and age-related disease traits. Finally, we discuss murine models and the potential mechanisms by which LOY contributes to disease.

The Relationship Between Intersectional Oppression and Affirmation and Latino Sexual Minority Men's Mental Health.

Purpose: Latino sexual minority men (LSMM) may experience oppression based on their ethnicity, sexual orientation, and migratory status, yet scientific literature is only beginning to explore the intersection of these experiences. This study examined mental health (MH) in relation to LSMM's experiences of intersectional oppression and affirmation. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of baseline data from a cohort study examining LSMM's (n = 290) health care engagement in Miami, FL, from February to September 2020. Latent class analysis (LCA) identified classes based on self-reported mul

A transdiagnostic minority stress treatment approach for gay and bisexual men's syndemic health conditions.

Developing and deploying separate treatments for separate conditions seems ill-suited to intervening upon the co-occurring, and possibly functionally similar, psychosocial conditions facing gay and bisexual men. This article argues for the need to create transdiagnostic interventions that reduce multiple syndemic conditions facing gay and bisexual men at the level of their shared source in minority stress pathways. This article first reviews psychosocial syndemic conditions affecting gay and bisexual men, then suggests pathways that might link minority stress to psychosocial syndemics based on

Men's experiences delivering palliative home health care in rural South Africa: an exploratory study.

AIMS: The study reported here formed part of a larger study that explored the experiences of health-care workers providing palliative care in patients' homes in rural South Africa. This paper hones in on the experiences of male caregivers. Zulu culture has been strongly patriarchal and the gender of a caregiver may affect both patients' and caregivers' experiences. METHODS: The study was exploratory, qualitative, and combined a visual methodology with unstructured interviews. The setting was a hospice and three home-based care organisations in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Participants we

High prevalence of mental disorders and comorbidity in the Geneva Gay Men's Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Several large surveys have suggested high prevalence of psychiatric disorders among gay men and other men who have sex with men. METHODS: In 2002, a comprehensive health survey was conducted among 571 gay men in Geneva, Switzerland, using probability-based time-space sampling. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview Short-Form (CIDI-SF) was used to assess 12-month prevalence of major depression, specific phobia, social phobia, alcohol dependence, and drug dependence. RESULTS: Nearly half (43.7%, 95% CI=39.0-48.4) of the sample fulfilled the criteria for at least one of t

Comorbidity and survival in HIV-infected men in the San Francisco Men's Health Survey.

The course of disease associated with infection with the human immunodeficiency virus varies widely. Some patients deteriorate rapidly, while others live for years, even after an illness that defines the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In this study, comorbidity, or the presence of concurrent health problems, was investigated prospectively as a possible co-factor for different rates of decline in 395 homosexual/bisexual men in the San Francisco Men's Health Study (SFMHS) who were infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Comorbidity data obtained from baseline interviews

Men's use of sexual health and HIV services in Swaziland: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Over one-quarter of the adult population in Swaziland is estimated to be HIV positive. Men's use of sexual health (SH) services has significant implications for HIV prevention. This study aimed to understand Swazi men's health-seeking behaviours in relation to SH and HIV services. METHODS: A household survey was conducted in Manzini (n=503), complemented by 23 semi-structured interviews and two focus group discussions (with a total of 10 participants). RESULTS: One-third of male survey participants used SH services in the past year, most commonly HIV testing (28%). Service users

Testosterone and Bone Health in Men.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To elucidate the association between testosterone and skeletal health in men. In this review, i) we discuss the influence of testosterone on bone metabolism, ii) review population studies demonstrating the relationship between sex steroid concentrations and bone mineral density (BMD) and bone quality, and iii) summarize data from seminal trials of testosterone therapy and its effects on bone density and fracture risk. RECENT FINDINGS: In population studies, low testosterone (and estradiol) levels in men are associated with reduced bone mass and a higher risk of fracture. Cl

Bone health in ageing men.

Osteoporosis does not only affect postmenopausal women, but also ageing men. The burden of disease is projected to increase with higher life expectancy both in females and males. Importantly, osteoporotic men remain more often undiagnosed and untreated compared to women. Sex steroid deficiency is associated with bone loss and increased fracture risk, and circulating sex steroid levels have been shown to be associated both with bone mineral density and fracture risk in elderly men. However, in contrast to postmenopausal osteoporosis, the contribution of relatively small decrease of circulating

Bone health in older men.

Senile osteoporosis in men remains under-recognized despite substantial fracture-related morbidity and higher post-fracture mortality than in women. Age-related bone loss in men involves progressive trabecular thinning, cortical deterioration, and declining sex steroid levels, while secondary causes, including hypogonadism, medications, and chronic diseases, account for up to 60% of cases. Current guidelines recommend assessment of bone mineral density (BMD) in men aged ≥70 years and earlier screening in those with clinical risk factors, complemented by fracture-risk assessment and evaluation

TUSKEGEE AND THE HEALTH OF BLACK MEN.

JEL Codes: I14, O15 For forty years, the Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male passively monitored hundreds of adult black males with syphilis despite the availability of effective treatment. The study's methods have become synonymous with exploitation and mistreatment by the medical profession. To identify the study's effects on the behavior and health of older black men, we use an interacted difference-in-difference-in-differences model, comparing older black men to other demographic groups, before and after the Tuskegee revelation, in varying proximity to the study's victim

Bone health in hypogonadal men.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine bone health in relation to testosterone and male hypogonadism. RECENT FINDINGS: An emerging area of research pertains to the newly described bone-testis axis. In particular, the peptide hormone osteocalcin, which is made by bone and fat, appears to play a role in testosterone production. Inconsistent weak associations have been noted between vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency and lower testosterone levels. Although a high prevalence of hypogonadism is associated with opioid use, HIV and transfusion-dependent thalassemia, the risk of fracture in these populatio

Health care screening for men who have sex with men.

Men who have sex with men often do not reveal their sexual practices or sexual orientation to their physician. Lack of disclosure from the patient, discomfort or inadequate training of the physician, perceived or real hostility from medical staff, and insufficient screening guidelines limit preventive care. Because of greater societal stresses, lack of emotional support, and practice of unsafe sex, men who have sex with men are at increased risk for sexually transmitted diseases (including human immunodeficiency virus infection), anal cancer, psychologic and behavioral disorders, drug abuse, a

Preventive Health Care for Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) comprise at least 4% of males in the United States. MSM may describe themselves as gay, bisexual, or heterosexual. Because current medical practice does not always facilitate discussion of sexual behaviors, this group of men may face barriers to receiving culturally competent, comprehensive health care, including preventive services. Barriers include a lack of a welcoming clinical environment, lack of adequate health insurance, and sexual minority stress. Health issues that have a disproportionate impact on MSM include mental health and behavioral problems, smok
