Experiential grounding of abstract concepts: Processing of abstract mental state concepts engages brain regions involved in mentalizing, automatic speech, and lip movements.

concepts like mental state concepts lack a physical referent, which can be directly perceived. Classical theories therefore claim that abstract concepts require amodal representations detached from experiential brain systems. However, grounded cognition approaches suggest an involvement of modal experiential brain regions in the processing of abstract concepts. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we investigated the relation of the processing of abstract mental state concepts to modal experiential brain systems in a fine-grained fashion. Participants performed lexical d

The transition process between child and adolescent mental services and adult mental health services for patients with anorexia nervosa: a qualitative study of the parents' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) often experience the transition between Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) as challenging. This period tends to have a negative influence on the continuity of care for the adolescents and represents a demanding and difficult period for the parents. To our knowledge, no previous study has explored the parents' experience with the transition from CAMHS to AMHS. Therefore, this qualitative study examines how parents experience the transition process from CAMHS to AMHS. METHODS: In collaborati

Advanced technology meets mental health: how smartphones, textile electronics, and signal processing can serve mental health monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment.

Mental disorders, characterized by impaired emotional and mood balance, are common in the West. Recent surveys have found that millions of people (age 18?65) have experienced some kind of mental disorder, such as psychotic disorder, major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, social phobia, and somatoform disorder [1]. Specifically, in 2010, 164.8 million people in Europe were affected by such illnesses [1].

Disclosure of mental illness towards employers during the return to work process after psychiatric hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: For people returning to the workplace after a leave of absence due to a mental illness the decision whether or not to disclose their mental illness is influenced by multiple factors. As part of the RETURN study, that surveyed in-patients with mental disorders in acute psychiatric wards, it was our aim in this secondary analysis to examine the effects of a return-to-work intervention on the disclosure process of employees returning back to their existing workplace after a leave of absence due to a mental illness. METHODS: This study, as part of RETURN, is a multi-center, cluster-ran

Ultra-processed food consumption is linked to quality of life and mental distress among university students.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are industrial formulations that typically contain little or no whole foods and are often high in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium. Research indicates that higher intake of UPFs correlates with lower overall diet quality, which can exacerbate mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. This study aimed to assess the associations between UPF consumption with health-related quality of life, and mental distress in university students. METHOD: This cross-sectional study consisted of 595 students resident in Samsun/Türkiye. The data were co

Attenuated maladaptive emotion processing as a potential mediator of the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and mental health.

The emotion processing and regulation mechanisms by which dispositional (personality trait) mindfulness exerts its positive effects on mental health remain unclear. Here, we tested, using structural equation modeling, whether the relationship between higher dispositional mindfulness and better mental health is mediated by reduced maladaptive processing of emotional information (e.g., expressive suppression, impoverished emotional experiences, unprocessed emotions, avoidance, externalizing strategies) and associated lower negative affect, enhanced adaptive processing of emotional information (e

The long and complex road in the search for treatment for mental disorders: An analysis of the process in five groups of patients.

Seeking treatment for mental-health problems is a complex process, with different underlying motives in each stage. However, the entire process and these motives have hardly been investigated. This study aims to analyze the different stages of the help-seeking process and their underlying motives in five groups of patients with different mental disorders. In all, 156 patients seeking treatment in outpatient mental health clinics were individually interviewed: 71 had Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), 21 had Agoraphobia (AGO), 18 had Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), 20 had Anorexia Nervosa (A

Temporary stages and motivational variables: Two complementary perspectives in the help-seeking process for mental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Help-seeking for mental disorders is a complex process, which includes different temporary stages, and in which the motivational variables play an especially relevant role. However, there is a lack of instruments to evaluate in depth both the temporary and motivational variables involved in the help-seeking process. This study aims to analyse in detail these two sets of variables, using a specific instrument designed for the purpose, to gain a better understanding of the process of treatment seeking. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 152 patients seeking treatment in mental healt

Dissociation between key processes of social cognition in autism: impaired mentalizing but intact sense of agency.

Deficits in social cognition and interaction, such as in mentalizing and imitation behavior, are hallmark features of autism spectrum disorders. Both imitation and mentalizing are at the core of the sense of agency, the awareness that we are the initiators of our own behavior. Little evidence exists regarding the sense of agency in autism. Thus, we compared high-functioning adults with autism to healthy control subjects using an action monitoring and attribution task. Subjects with autism did not show deficits in this task, yet they showed significant mentalizing deficits. Our findings indicat

Mental health disparities by sex: unravelling determinants and changes in the refugee resettlement process over a decade.

AIMS: Significant sex disparities in mental health have been observed amongst resettled refugees, yet how these disparities and their determinants evolve over time remains unclear. This study sought to quantitatively unravel determinants and changes in mental health disparities by sex. METHODS: Data were drawn from Waves 1 (2013-2014), 5 (2017-2018) and 6 (2023) of the 10-year Building a New Life in Australia (BNLA) cohort. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and high risk of severe mental illness (HR-SMI) were measured using the PTSD-8 and Kessler-6 scales. Fairlie method was used to quant

Internalizing/Externalizing Problems and Sensory Processing Alteration in Children Referred to Child Mental Health Centers.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Internalizing and externalizing problems have been associated with sensory processing (SP) alteration, where severe alterations are equivalent to sensory processing disorder (SPD). This study aims to examine the relationship between childhood problems and the degree of SP alteration in children referred to a child mental health center (CMHC). METHODS: The study included sixty-four children (44 boys and 20 girls), aged 6 to 8 years, referred to a CMHC in Gipuzkoa, Spain. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18) and the Child Sensory Profile (CSP-2). Ana

Social and environmental factors during the smoking cessation process: The experiences of adults with serious mental illnesses.

INTRODUCTION: People living with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses (SMI) face a disproportionate burden of tobacco-related prevalence and, consequently, tobacco-induced morbidity, in comparison to those without SMI. Social and environmental factors play an important role in the health of people with SMI yet less is known about the role of these factors in smoking cessation interventions for adults with SMI. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the social and environmental factors that contributed to the smoking cessation process among adults with SMI enrolled in a smoking ces

An early intervention for adolescent depression targeting emotional mental images and memory specificity: a process evaluation.

We have evaluated a novel early intervention for adolescent depression (age 16-18) in a feasibility randomised controlled trial. This nested process evaluation aimed to understand how this complex intervention worked. We sought to understand participants' views and experiences of receiving and interacting with the intervention to evaluate whether the underpinning theoretical basis of the intervention is justified and whether it contributes to valued outcomes for participants. Twelve participants were invited to take part in semi-structured interviews. Framework analysis was employed to identif

Electrophysiological evidence of atypical processing underlying mental set shifting in ecstasy polydrug and polydrug users.

Executive functioning deficits are reported in ecstasy users. However research into mental set switching has been equivocal, with behavioral studies suggesting the function is preserved. The current study sought to address the issue of switching deficits in ecstasy users by combining behavioral performance with electrophysiological correlates (electroencephalography; EEG). Twenty ecstasy polydrug users, 20 nonecstasy polydrug users, and 20 drug naive controls were recruited. Participants completed questionnaires about their drug use, sleep quality, fluid intelligence, and current mood state. E

Mental imagery and post-event processing in anticipation of a speech performance among socially anxious individuals.

The present study investigated whether post-event processing (PEP) involving mental imagery about a past speech is particularly detrimental for socially anxious individuals who are currently anticipating giving a speech. One hundred fourteen high and low socially anxious participants were told they would give a 5 min impromptu speech at the end of the experimental session. They were randomly assigned to one of three manipulation conditions: post-event processing about a past speech incorporating imagery (PEP-Imagery), semantic post-event processing about a past speech (PEP-Semantic), or a cont

[Changes in coagulographic indices of patients with cerebral atherosclerosis complicated by mental disorders during the treatment process].

Examination and treatment of 40 patients with atherosclerotic dementia demonstrated a significant increase in some indices of the hemocoagulation system. These changes were expressed in an increase of blood tolerance to heparin, shortening of the recalcification time, increase in the fibrinogen content, presence of fibrinogen B. The group studied was characterized by the presence of slightly marked fibrinolysis compensatory reactions. Treatment by novocain combined with aspirin led to appreciable changes in these indices towards normalization, permitting to consider this form of therapy as pat

Virtual reality interventions for mental health and well-being in palliative care: systematic review and narrative synthesis - outcomes, techniques, processes and mechanisms.

PURPOSE: This review systematically synthesises the evidence on changes in mental health and wellbeing observed in palliative care patients following virtual reality (VR) interventions. METHODS: In July 2024, systematic searches were conducted across five databases (Embase, PsycINFO, Medline, CINAHL Complete and Academic Search Complete), supplemented by hand searches and citation chaining. Search concepts included "virtual reality" and "palliative care". Inclusion criteria were established for adults receiving VR interventions in palliative care settings, limited to English language articles

Between epistemic injustice and therapeutic jurisprudence: Coronial processes involving families of autistic people, people with learning disabilities and/or mental ill health.

Understanding how and why someone dies unexpectedly is key to bereaved family members. The coronial process in England investigates instances where the cause of death is unknown, violent or unnatural and/or occurred in state detention. Families are held to be at the centre of this process and the coroner's role has extended to concern about therapeutic jurisprudence, that is, how legal processes can minimise negative consequences for participants without jeopardising due process. Therapeutic jurisprudence involves unresolved tensions, however, and an epistemic power imbalance. Within the inque

10-Week Trajectories of Candidate Psychological Processes Differentially Predict Mental Health Gains from Online Dyadic versus Mindfulness Interventions: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: App-based contemplative interventions, such as mindfulness-based interventions, have gained popularity for the promotion of mental health; however, the understanding of underlying intervention-specific mechanisms remains limited, especially related to novel inter-relational dyadic practices. Methods: We tested (n = 253) seven putative mechanisms underlying two brief (daily 12-min) online mental interventions: attention-focused mindfulness and socio-emotional partner-based, both supported by weekly online coaching. Weekly self-reports of rumination, worry, psychological flexibility,

Transdiagnostic processes in university mental health: the role of psychological inflexibility, impulsivity and stress in depression and life satisfaction using structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: Perceived stress is a central transdiagnostic process in university mental health, yet the mechanisms linking dispositional vulnerabilities to psychological distress and positive wellbeing remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether perceived stress mediates the associations of psychological inflexibility and impulsivity with depressive symptoms and life satisfaction among Ecuadorian university students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 4,524 Ecuadorian university students. Psychological inflexibility, impulsivity, perceived stress, depressive symptom
