Attachment, Mentalization, and Criterion B of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD).

BACKGROUND: The mentalization theory posits that interpersonal difficulties and maladaptive personality traits develop from an insecure attachment pattern with one's caregiver and corresponding deficits in mentalizing-the ability to understand others' and one's own mental states. Mentalizing deficits have been theorized as the basis for all psychopathology, with the paradigmatic case being Borderline Personality Disorder. Nevertheless, developments in the personality field indicate personality pathology is best represented dimensionally, and such a proposal was outlined by the Alternative DSM-

Attachment and mentalization and their association with child and adolescent eating pathology: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Insecure attachment and mentalizing difficulties have been associated with eating pathology in adulthood. However, it is unclear whether eating pathology is associated with attachment or mentalization in children. The aim of this study is to systematically review the literature in this emerging field. METHOD: Electronic databases were used to search for articles. RESULTS: Twenty-two studies were identified. In the 15 studies investigating attachment, an association with eating pathology was found in all studies. Mentalizing difficulties and eating pathology were found to be correl

Modelling the longitudinal associations between schizotypy and aberrant salience: The role of mentalization and attachment.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the role of mentalization and attachment in the development of schizotypy into aberrant salience. Specifically, we examine how disruptions in these socio-cognitive capacities interact with multidimensional schizotypy to influence self-fragmentation, emotional instability and social detachment. METHOD: Study variables were measured using self-report scales. A two-wave cohort study design was implemented with a 9-month assessment interval. The cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between mentalizing, attachment, negative affect, aberrant salience and

Patient characteristics of completion and dropout of mentalization-based treatment for adolescents with conduct disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Conduct disorder (CD) is a severe mental disorder in youth. Yet, providing psychological interventions for adolescents with CD is challenging. This patient group is often characterized by risk factors for therapy dropout such as, e.g., CD symptoms and being in middle adolescence. On the other hand, little is known about characteristics of adolescents with CD who complete treatment. To gain more insight into what might become a successful therapy with adolescents with CD, this study explores baseline characteristics and drop-out occurrence in patients with CD referred to mentaliza

Unified Protocol vs Mentalization-Based Therapy for Adolescents With Borderline Personality Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite several treatments, e.g., mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and Unified Protocol (UP), being adapted to treat adolescents with borderline personality disorder (BPD), there exists a dearth of literature regarding their relative efficacy. In this study modified forms of MBT and UP - MBT-A and UP-A respectively-were compared in their ability to reduce borderline symptoms in a sample of 91 Iranian adolescents (two-thirds female) with a BPD diagnosis. METHODS: Individuals randomly allocated to one of two treatment groups, MBT-A (N = 45) or UP-A (N = 46) were followed up across

Spillover effects on the relationship with the partner of a mentalization-based intervention for pregnant women.

The birth of a child has been associated with a decline in couple satisfaction, which has implications for the child's social-emotional development. This study investigated the potential spillover effect on pregnant women's perceptions of their relationships with their partners of the Supporting the Transition to and Engagement in Parenthood (STEP) program, a brief trauma-informed mentalization-based prenatal group intervention. Participants (94% White) were recruited in prenatal clinics and through online advertisements in Quebec, Canada. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected

Mentalization, session-to-session negative emotion expression, symbolic play, and affect regulation in psychodynamic child psychotherapy.

Internalizing and externalizing problems have been related to negative emotionality, and affect regulation deficits in several studies. Certain psychodynamic models of treatment use children's symbolic play activity as a medium to mentalize negative emotions in order to develop children's affect regulation. However, the complex associations among these constructs and their associations with outcome have not been examined. This study aimed to investigate, first, whether average mentalization practices in treatment, as well as session-to-session expression of negative emotions and symbolic play

The relationship of maternal mentalization and executive functioning to maternal recognition of infant cues and bonding.

OBJECTIVE: XPG (Xeroderma pigmentosum group G, XPG), a single strand-specific DNA endonuclease in the nucleotide excision repair pathway, has been implicated in lung cancer. Potentially functional rs873601 in XPG is consistently associated with gastrointestinal cancer, and miR-4715-3p, targeting 3UTR of XPG, also influences the process of gastrointestinal carcinogenesis, however, the relationships between XPG and miR-4715-3p and rs873601 in lung cancer have not been elucidated. METHODS: A case-control study included 264 lung cancer patients and 264 cancer-free healthy controls and was designe

The Unbroken Circle: From Child Analysis to Mentalization-Based Treatment (MBT) with Children, Adolescents, and Families.

It is now more than 30 years since Peter Fonagy published his classic 1991 paper introducing the concept of "mentalization" into the psychoanalytic literature, and in the period since then mentalization-based treatment (MBT) has emerged as an important therapeutic approach. In reviewing the history of this treatment, it is often assumed that MBT emerged at the interface between three domains: first, the developmental research on theory of mind; second, the clinical challenges of treating borderline personality disorder; and third, the empirical research on intergenerational patterns of attachm

[Mentalizing the pain-Implementation of a mentalization-based manual for the therapeutic support of pain patients.].

Chronic pain is usually a complex disorder with possible indications for an impairment at the personality functioning level. Guidelines recommend a multiprofessional interdisciplinary treatment approach. Based on the alternative model of personality disorders of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases, eleventh revision (ICD-11), an integrative manual was designed to exactly fit the interdisciplinary multimodal treatment of patients of the day clinic for pain at the orthopedic clinic of the University Hos

Disturbances in the experiences of embodiment related to attachment, mentalization and self-objectification in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance is central to both the understanding and treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN); however, the underlying psychological processes involved are still not well understood. One way towards a better understanding of these mechanisms may be to explore the sense of embodiment in these patients in an attempt at integrating the role of the body in our understanding of the development of self in AN. It is hypothesized that difficulties in affective experiences of embodiment is related to insecure attachment, deficits in mentalization and self-objectification. METHODS: Six

Mentalization deficit in bipolar patients during an acute depressive and manic episode: association with cognitive functions.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies in bipolar patients have shown a deficit in mentalization (theory of mind), one of the main aspects of social cognition. The aim of current study was to assess both cognitive and affective mentalization in well-defined groups of depressed and manic bipolar patients, compared to healthy control subjects, using a battery of tests measuring mentalization processes. The second aim was to investigate a possible relationship between cognitive and affective mentalization and cognitive functions in bipolar patients during a depressive and manic episode. METHODS: The st

Mothering from the Inside Out: A mentalization-based therapy for mothers in treatment for drug addiction.

Not all mothers with histories of substance use struggle as parents, but many of them do. Research has shown that, although quality of caregiving varies widely, as a group, mothers with histories of chronic substance use are at greater risk than mothers with no substance use history for losing custody of their young children (Grant et al., 2011; Choi & Ryan, 2006; Department of Health and Human Services, 1999). In observational studies, mothers with substance use disorders have demonstrated lower levels of sensitivity and responsiveness to their young children's emotional cues and marked oscil

Smartphone-Based Mindfulness and Mentalization Ecological Momentary Interventions for Common Mental Health Problems: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Accessible ecological momentary interventions deliver brief, real-time support integrated into daily routines. Interpersonal dynamics and maladaptive coping mechanisms can contribute to an individual's anxiety and depression. Both mindfulness and mentalization represent psychological constructs with the potential to mitigate the negative impact of interpersonal stressors. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of an automated mindfulness- and mentalization-based ecological momentary intervention for common mental health problems as delivered via a m

Relationship-Specific Attachment and Mentalization as Predictors of Borderline Personality Features and Interpersonal Competence Among Emerging Adults.

Developmental psychopathology models, like the mentalization theory, have facilitated the theoretical understanding of trajectories that contribute to the expression and experience of borderline personality (BP) features. Mentalization theory posits that BP vulnerabilities and interpersonal difficulties arise from insecure attachment experiences and deficits in mentalizing ability. This study explored the intersections of attachment vulnerabilities in close relationships, mentalizing domains, and their combined impact on BP features and interpersonal competence in emerging adults. The sample i

[Conduct Disorder - An Integrative Treatment Approach with Reference to the Theoretical Concepts of Mentalization. A Case Report].

The present case report presents the treatment of an adolescent with a diagnosis of F 91.1 conduct disorder, childhood-onset type. The treatment refers to the theoretical concepts of trauma-, psychodrama- and mentalization based psychotherapy. Before starting treatment several test diagnostic procedures were carried out. The psychotherapy targeted at changing the representations of attachment and at a process based development of healthy self-parts in the sense of mentalization. The therapeutic relationship took on a special position. The purpose of this paper is the question of how mental pro

Mentalization-Based Therapy for Children and Families: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Recent Literature.

This systematic review evaluated the impact of Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) parenting interventions on parental reflective functioning (PRF, the operationalized measure of the metalizing construct), child psychosocial outcomes, and parenting factors. A meta-analysis of studies measuring PRF using the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ) indicated small, non-significant effects, with high heterogeneity across studies. Narrative synthesis of 19 studies suggested generally positive outcomes, including improvements in PRF, child emotional regulation and parental stress, though

The Network Model of Mentalization, Social Vulnerability, and the Self in Autism: A Comparison With Neurotypical Adults.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by alterations in social understanding and self-related experience that overlap with broader dimensions of psychosocial vulnerability. These domains are tightly interconnected, motivating the use of analytic approaches that can capture their organization as complex associations rather than as isolated dimensions. We applied network analysis to autistic adults (N = 156) and demographically matched neurotypical controls (N = 454). Gaussian graphical models were estimated using sum scores of psychosocial constructs, and networks were compared using
